no one can write about ghosts, not even the bible. we can read a passage about the child-prophet, who lived and died for god, being violently ripped from the afterlife. we can read of moses returning from forty days spent alone with god and no longer looking like he belonged in the world. we can read of the food we leave out for the dead, of the israelites drinking contaminated water and then being damned to wander the wilderness half-dead half-alive, of god refusing to give elisha a body to mourn and elisha, in turn, refusing to stop being a prophetic body. but ghosts and hauntings are supra-linguistic. less cognitive than limbic. they are not in the text at all. not even a little bit. in fact, they are so far from the text that they are under your bed. in your closet. prophets are haunting you still. god might appear in the reflection of a medicine cabinet if you close it too hastily. no one can write about ghosts, not even the bible, because they do not haunt scripture, they haunt you

“I look at the egg in the kitchen with superficial attention so as not to break it. I take the utmost care not to understand it. Since it is impossible to understand, I know that if I understand it this is because I am making an error. Understanding is the proof of making an error. Understanding it is not the way to see it–Never thinking about the egg is a way to have seen it–I wonder, do I know of the egg? I almost certainly do…–What I don’t know about the egg is what really matters. What I don’t know about the egg gives me the egg properly speaking.”

Clarice Lispector, from “The Egg and the Chicken”, Collected Stories (trans. Katarina Dodson)

the clouds today are strung with spaces between them like alternating current or beads individually secured to a chain instead of threaded continuously on a string causing the sunlight to flicker on and off in intervals like a low framerate time lapse as im sitting in the cold sun gloveless experiencing the death of dexterity in my hands and by way of that the thaw of symbol from where it encases the touchable world obsessively reading every gertrude stein poem i can find and imagining alternative histories in which bonaparte was a vegan

English spelling isn't that hard to understand as long as you also understand French orthography, Dutch orthography, the Great Vowel Shift, the Latin language, the history of the printing press, and the etymology of every word introduced to English in the last 600 years
