@confusedlamp

queer// upper 20's// he/ him (I don't understand gender, but I found one I like so I'm rolling with it)... Other stuff I blog about: art, Murdoch Mysteries, Agents of Shield, Judaism, frogs, animals, Imperial Radch, being southern, the environment, The Umbrella Academy. Username is a reference to nothing except that I'm perpetually confused and happened to be looking at a lamp when I made my account.

In a very important home life update: we got a high vis vest for one of our chickens

They apparently have a great unintended use of stopping hens from getting bullied, so we got one to try it out since the above hen gets excessively picked on by the others (we don't really know why).

Shout put to the wonderful @gingervivilou who told me about it!!

We’re not miserable because of viruses or heat indexes. We’re miserable because this system forces us to participate in our own destruction. We’re miserable because we know deep down that we’re in trouble, that we have to adapt, but we’re still expected to sling lates for assholes, all the way up until the momenta wildfire or a flood engulfs our neighborhood.
We’re miserable because we’re forced to watch the world burn on our phones, and then we’re accused of doomscrolling.
Isn’t that something?

Concept: a mermaid who collects human artifacts, but, like, exclusively objects that humans have dramatically cast into the sea in moments of high emotion, catharsis, or personal revelation. Each item is carefully mounted above a little index card that outlines the circumstances of its hurling in terse, clinical prose.

How many outdated cellphones does she have from businessmen who realize that Family is more important?

Fewer than you’d think. For a variety of fascinating demographic and cultural reasons, importance-of-family cell phones are considerably more likely to be hurled into lakes than oceans. She’s co-authored a paper on the subject that’s due to be published next month.

A day late, but posting a story of when we first got married to celebrate our anniversary:

The thing about having an autistic husband, is as much as I love him, he just is not capable of picking up on behaviors or facial expressions and knowing what they mean. He needs me to speak the words I’m feeling.

Early on, this was a problem. When I was exhausted after work and didn’t have the emotional energy to deal with anything, I needed some time alone.

I would say “I’m tired,” get up and leave a room.

He’d follow.

I would shut a door.

He would open it, and keep talking to me.

I had to actually speak the words, “I would like a little bit of space for a while.”

And then he would say, “Oh.” In a sad voice.

And then I’d feel like an asshole, because he always seemed so sad when I did that. I didn’t want to hurt him. I loved him, and I thought I was a bad wife for wanting time for myself. Things were not good.

One day, I came home, and on my desk was a card, laminated. It was simple, black text on white background, in 36-point font. It said:

I love you. Fuck off.

And he took my hands and said the reason he was sad wasn’t that I needed space— he needs his sometimes too, but I pick up the signals and leave him alone.

He felt bad that he couldn’t understand me, and I always looked so uncomfortable and guilty when I told him.

So now I have a card that I can hand to him, any time, and he will understand and go away for an hour and nobody feels guilty.

I greatly enjoy Discovery but part of me yearns for the days when Star Trek had 22 episodes to a season just so we could get a good ole filler episode about Saru trying to keep T'Rina's bonsai tree from dying while she's away at a conference and Owo & Detmer getting into a bar fight with the Emerald Chain over table tennis

I’m imagining a scenario in which Boimler meets Worf and introduces himself as Ensign Boimler, and Worf says he recognizes him and Boims gets excited for a second until Worf explains that he recognizes the name Boimler from the brand of prune juice that comes from Bradward’s family’s vineyard.

"For we each of us deserve everything, every luxury that was ever piled in the tombs of the dead kings, and we each of us deserve nothing, not a mouthful of bread in hunger. Have we not eaten while another starved? Will you punish us for that? Will you reward us for the virtue of starving while others ate? No man earns punishment, no man earns reward. Free your mind of the idea of deserving, the idea of earning, and you will begin to be able to think."
― Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed

Often the most dangerous part of a hurricane is not the wind, it's the floods. Wind speed is the only thing that determines the category of storm, but flooding from rainfall and storm surge can often be the most deadly. This is not to say high winds aren't dangerous, but just to say that please don't assume it's safe to go out during a hurricane because the wind speed is low where you are.

The deadliest hurricane in recent history to hit the state I live in was only a category 2. What killed most people were the floods.

buses are like huge docile animals to me. so sweet and gentle and kind. what a creature.

look at her.

a flock…..

placing my hand tenderly in between a busses headlights and leaving my face in to press my forehead onto the windshield.

It's because going by eye placement, busses are large, gentle herbivores

When the bus closes its doors and huffs gently to itself before setting off...

its so fucking criminal that they just didnt bother bringing elnor into picard s3. they couldnt even be arsed explaining why he wasnt there he was just gone and after being written out of most of s2 as well. they wrote a character that was too interesting for their show and had to find a way to get rid of him before they were forced to explore him in any depth

ik they wrote out their original characters to make room for the next gen cast on s3 but they clearly didnt care about writing them with any depth either otherwise they wouldve let worf and elnor meet

^post i started making during s3 and never finished but is still fucking true!!!

the fact that worf's hatred and distrust of romulans was a major character trait makes this even more frustrating bc you couldve resolved a decades-long plot thread and shown that he's finally moved on from the trauma of the khitomer massacre through giving him scenes with elnor but no

they really didnt want to do anything actually challenging with the romulans after using them as a terribly executed refugee metaphor slash villainous cult in the first season and i think thats part of why they wrote out elnor before they started writing out everyone else and its utterly criminal
