The real secret is turning disadvantage into advantage.

tng is so frickin good, man

The bearded actor who plays Riva, Howie Seago, is deaf, and pitched the idea of doing an episode about a deaf mediator to the producers of ST: TNG.

People forget that Old Trek wasn't just progressive talking points, there's some definite pro life messaging going on in the show and it handled the topics much more nuanced than what new trek does.

Spock Reflections: Picard’s Message For Spock

Captain Jean-Luc Picard decides to inform a sole individual about what transpired with himself and James T. Kirk on Viridian III: That person is Spock.

“ … It turns out that James Kirk had not died on the Enterprise-B … As the world already believed him to be dead, and explaining the mysterious properties of the Nexus would prove difficult, I instead thought it best to lay Captain Kirk to rest on Viridian III, where he gave his life to save millions … But I felt that you above all should know.” - Jean-Luc Picard’s message sent to Spock informing of Jim’s passing.

Spock promptly leaves his duties on Romulus to carry out a personal solo mission on Jim’s behalf. Spock embarks across the neutral zone to visit Jim Kirk’s grave on Viridian III upon receiving Picard’s message.

Spock then carries Jim’s remains across the galaxy back home to Earth, and buries him on the Kirk family’s farmland property in Riverside, Iowa where Jim grew up.

The real secret is turning disadvantage into advantage.

[ID: Several screenshots from Star Trek: The Next Generation, showing Geordi, Riker, Picard, and several new characters standing on the bridge. The main new character is Riva, a Deaf man wearing a blue cloak, with red hair and a red beard, and the people known as his Chorus--three telepaths who all wear white. Riva does not speak out loud, so his Chrous reads his thoughts and translates for him.

The screenshots begin with Geordi speaking to Riva: “It is my pleasure to meet you, sir.”

The Chorus speaks Riva’s thoughts, saying: “What is that you’re wearing?”, while Riva puts his hands on either side of Geordi’s face to gesture to his visor.

Geordi responds, “A visor--it interprets the electromagnetic spectrum, and then carries the readings to my brain.”

Riva asks, “And without it, can you see?”

Geordi: “Without it, I’m as blind as a stump.”

Riva: “Then your visor serves the same function as my Chorus, which interprets my thoughts and translates them into sound.”

Geordi: “Yes.”

Riva: “And you don’t resent it?”

Geordi: “The visor or being blind?”

Riva: “Either.”

Geordi: “Well, no. Since they’re both a part of me, and I really like who I am, there’s no reason to for me to resent either one.”

Riva: “What is your position on this ship?”

Geordi: “I’m the chief engineer, sir.”

Riva: “It’s a blessing to understand that we are special, each in his own way.”

Geordi: “Yes, that’s the way I feel exactly.”

Riva lowers his hands from Geordi’s visor, and Geordi places his hand over Riva’s heart while they both smile.

honestly if you HAVE to die at 23 then slumping forward in your brother’s warm arms while he holds you and pets your hair and cradles your face and rocks you and speaks softly and sweetly to you isn’t that bad a way to go and once the pain from the stab wound fades to a sort of numb distant throb while you bleed out the sensation of falling against your brother who loves you is the last feeling you have and it really isn’t so bad after all as far as deaths go and i don’t think dean ever realized how comfortable he made it

sorry not to keep posting about spock and t'pring deadly but semi amicable divorce situation but in my vision of things. sometime post tmp they meet each other again at some science conference where they're both giving papers or something, and since they're both much more comfortable and settled they keep in touch. kirk finds this very weird bc he still feels vaguely defensive on spock's behalf about the whole rejection/divorce/fight to the death situation even if spock doesn't care, but he lets it be. they end up calling regularly once a month to talk about their research & t'pring is like 'you have my strongest respect but I'm very pleased I divorced you' & spock is like 'agreed it would be a most unfortunate state of affairs to be married, your logic was irreproachable' & kirk's sitting bemusedly in the living room listening to this like. well what can you do. anyways then spock invites t'pring to their eventual wedding and it becomes apparent at the reception that he's been the vulcan equivalent of a godfather to her daughter for years now, which in true spock fashion he hadn't told anyone including his husband. their first argument as a married couple is whether it was logical to tell him when he wouldn't even want to be a co-godfather due to his petty resentment over the small matter of having to fight each other to the death more than a decade ago, which kirk adamantly refuses to admit to
