Really one of my most strongly held beliefs is that it’s deeply unhealthy and soul-stunting for children to only consume media the world’s most coddling and judgemental adults determined was ‘age-appropriate’, and watching stuff that would horrify your parents behind their back should be encouraged and rewarded.

This.

Adults who heard that my parents let me watch PG-13 and R rated movies and TV shows at a kid (from as young as 3 years) because I proved I understood the difference between fantasy and reality, so they knew I knew what I was watching was fictional. Then my parents had the audacity to claim I was sheltered a few years into my adulthood. Like, I understood adult concepts long before more of my peers, I was not sheltered. And the bulk of that was done by my access to a wide range of media. Sure, I didn't understand all the adult jokes in many things, but that's ok.

Anyone believing this shjt is failing an open book test.

I'll keep saying this because it's true as an Elder Millenial Iranian American, this shit is terrifying because I am seeing the same patterns the US used to justify invading Afghanistan & Iraq and kill millions of people-- when that proved to be too difficult to do with ground forces, shifted to indiscriminate aerial bombardments and drone strikes for years Like, Palestine barely had enough food or water to live before; they didn't have enough chemicals to make the necessary medicines that they weren't allowed to import; they entirely lack PPE and have been suffering the ravages of COVID without masks or vaccines How the fuck is Hamas supposed to get the materiel and personnel to construct WMDs? This is preparation work for more genocide and it is called atrocity propaganda. People in the past couple weeks are already being lynched throughout the so-called west because they're Arabic or Muslim & just like in the W years of the war, this will only worsen with more attacks. A white landlord murdered an Arabic child tenant and attempted to kill his mother too. Zionists are showing up at Palestinian solidarity rallies brandishing weapons, promising genocide. These things we saw too during 2020 when fascists were attacking almost every single protest in every city refusing to be silent and complicit in the police state genociding people of color after witnessing the murder of George Floyd. People died from white terror attacks and then as now and as in the aughts, the police ensured little to nothing happened to the perpetrators as the mainstream news turned away & remained silent, while denouncing desperate efforts to defend protestors from police and assorted "civilian" and paramilitary fascist terror attacks

I will forever condemn everyone who has claimed to have sympathy, empathy, or solidarity for the oppressed & marginalized but refused to support our acts of resistance.

"Failing an open book test" is hella accurate. How do so many people who endured the the "Saddam has WMDs" lie keep falling for this shit?

So Texas did what they were always planning to do and made abortions even if the mother's life is at risk illegal.

A woman who's name is Kate Cox tried to fight against the supreme court because the fetus isn't viable and she will die if she doesn't get an abortion, and they told her "too bad."

They were never pro-life.

They don't care that she wants to have this abortion because otherwise her fertility is at risk, along with the 90-95% chance of this ending in either miscarriage or the death of the baby before the first year, and only proves once again that the GOP laws on abortion are forced birth, not pro life.

I listened to this on my way home from the doctor's office today.

EVERYONE SHOULD - PLEASE - LISTEN TO THIS INTERVIEW

Ruth Ben-Ghiat is an expert on FASCISTS & AUTHORITARIANS. Not only is the interview interesting. IT'S TERRIFYING as well. She discusses how easily Authoritarians like Trump can take over countries & destroy their democracies.

WE CAN'T LET THIS HAPPEN.

the widely criticized practice is aimed at encouraging gay or lesbian minors to change their sexual orientation and transgender children to identify as the gender identity assigned to them at birth. Washington is one of 26 states have barred or restricted such therapy for minors, the state’s lawyers say.
The court’s decision not to take up the case means the [ban] remains intact.

Major win for transgender kids and their families, as Washington State's ban on conversion therapy is affirmed by SCOTUS. This ruling protects similar bans in 25 other states too.

A surprising but welcome result from these conservative jackasses.

"Two and a half years ago, when I was asked to help write the most authoritative report on climate change in the United States, I hesitated...

In the end, I said yes, but reluctantly. Frankly, I was sick of admonishing people about how bad things could get. Scientists have raised the alarm over and over again, and still the temperature rises. Extreme events like heat waves, floods and droughts are becoming more severe and frequent, exactly as we predicted they would. We were proved right. It didn’t seem to matter.

Our report, which was released on Tuesday, contains more dire warnings. There are plenty of new reasons for despair. Thanks to recent scientific advances, we can now link climate change to specific extreme weather disasters, and we have a better understanding of how the feedback loops in the climate system can make warming even worse. We can also now more confidently forecast catastrophic outcomes if global emissions continue on their current trajectory.

But to me, the most surprising new finding in the Fifth National Climate Assessment is this: There has been genuine progress, too.

I’m used to mind-boggling numbers, and there are many of them in this report. Human beings have put about 1.6 trillion tons of carbon in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution — more than the weight of every living thing on Earth combined. But as we wrote the report, I learned other, even more mind-boggling numbers. In the last decade, the cost of wind energy has declined by 70 percent and solar has declined 90 percent. Renewables now make up 80 percent of new electricity generation capacity. Our country’s greenhouse gas emissions are falling, even as our G.D.P. and population grow.

In the report, we were tasked with projecting future climate change. We showed what the United States would look like if the world warms by 2 degrees Celsius. It wasn’t a pretty picture: more heat waves, more uncomfortably hot nights, more downpours, more droughts. If greenhouse emissions continue to rise, we could reach that point in the next couple of decades. If they fall a little, maybe we can stave it off until the middle of the century. But our findings also offered a glimmer of hope: If emissions fall dramatically, as the report suggested they could, we may never reach 2 degrees Celsius at all.

For the first time in my career, I felt something strange: optimism.

And that simple realization was enough to convince me that releasing yet another climate report was worthwhile.

Something has changed in the United States, and not just the climate. State, local and tribal governments all around the country have begun to take action. Some politicians now actually campaign on climate change, instead of ignoring or lying about it. Congress passed federal climate legislation — something I’d long regarded as impossible — in 2022 as we turned in the first draft.

[Note: She's talking about the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Act, which despite the names were the two biggest climate packages passed in US history. And their passage in mid 2022 was a big turning point: that's when, for the first time in decades, a lot of scientists started looking at the numbers - esp the ones that would come from the IRA's funding - and said "Wait, holy shit, we have an actual chance."]

And while the report stresses the urgency of limiting warming to prevent terrible risks, it has a new message, too: We can do this. We now know how to make the dramatic emissions cuts we’d need to limit warming, and it’s very possible to do this in a way that’s sustainable, healthy and fair.

The conversation has moved on, and the role of scientists has changed. We’re not just warning of danger anymore. We’re showing the way to safety.

I was wrong about those previous reports: They did matter, after all. While climate scientists were warning the world of disaster, a small army of scientists, engineers, policymakers and others were getting to work. These first responders have helped move us toward our climate goals. Our warnings did their job.

To limit global warming, we need many more people to get on board... We need to reach those who haven’t yet been moved by our warnings. I’m not talking about the fossil fuel industry here; nor do I particularly care about winning over the small but noisy group of committed climate deniers. But I believe we can reach the many people whose eyes glaze over when they hear yet another dire warning or see another report like the one we just published.

The reason is that now, we have a better story to tell. The evidence is clear: Responding to climate change will not only create a better world for our children and grandchildren, but it will also make the world better for us right now.

Eliminating the sources of greenhouse gas emissions will make our air and water cleaner, our economy stronger and our quality of life better. It could save hundreds of thousands or even millions of lives across the country through air quality benefits alone. Using land more wisely can both limit climate change and protect biodiversity. Climate change most strongly affects communities that get a raw deal in our society: people with low incomes, people of color, children and the elderly. And climate action can be an opportunity to redress legacies of racism, neglect and injustice.

I could still tell you scary stories about a future ravaged by climate change, and they’d be true, at least on the trajectory we’re currently on. But it’s also true that we have a once-in-human-history chance not only to prevent the worst effects but also to make the world better right now. It would be a shame to squander this opportunity. So I don’t just want to talk about the problems anymore. I want to talk about the solutions. Consider this your last warning from me."

another day another post claiming to give information about transness in history that literally only brings up transfeminine people. can we please stop using "trans" to mean "only transfems because i either can't be bothered to research transmascs & others or don't think it's important to point out the absence of information on transmascs & others"

Part of me always wonders if the person just isn't curating their own experience as well as they should be when I see posts like this (in general, not about transmascs specifically) (or maybe I'm the weird one and just have a non-standard experience). Like, about this post specifically, I see more posts like the above than I do posts like the ones they complain about, while also seeing a good about of the posts they are saying aren't being made. Maybe you just need to follow better people, ya know?

It strikes me along the same lines that people who complain "that the MCU are the only movies that exist" and it's like, stop spending all your time focused on the thing you hate and maybe you'll notice that there are other things in the world that you just weren't looking for because you were too busy talking about what you hate.

I mean, I absolutely am aware that posts out there like the ones I want DO exist. The post that prompted this wasn't even by someone I was following, it was a post on Instagram about trans Muslim history– which I was very excited about, but was disappointed by because while it gave important information on transfems, it did not even mention transmasculinity despite claiming to be about general trans history.

This isn't even just a Posting™ problem. If you look up studies on trans people with HIV for example, the overwhelming majority is focused on trans women, even if the study also includes men who have sex with men. By which they mean cis men, yet don't think that's important to include despite making it a point to respect trans women's identities and talk about transphobia. (& this has real dangerous effects on transmascs, since PrEP isn't advertised to them & little research is done on how effective it is when it comes to vaginal sex). I have seen countless articles talking about how trans people used to be worshipped, only to exclusively talk about the gala and hijra without ever bringing up transmascs even to address their absence, or talk about two-spirits but only those who were MTF. I literally went through and counted the people on the trans history Wikipedia list at one point, and especially in the historical sections, transfems drastically outnumbered transmascs.

I definitely do see posts about transmasc history, but I also specifically follow people who talk about transmasculinity and actively seek out information on transmascs. It's not that these don't exist or are never ever talked about. But like... erasure is one of the only things people agree transmascs consistently suffer from. I've seen plenty of people talk about being in classes where trans people are brought up, only for their teachers to completely ignore transmascs and even justify their absence by arguing that no one cared about transmasculinity, or transmascs simply didn't exist in that part of history. Obviously people's experiences vary, this is not universal to every post, article, class, group, etc. but it's a widespread and systematic issue regardless. There's a reason basically every paper researching transmasc starts out their introduction with "Very little research has been done on transmascs so we barely know anything about their experiences."

What bothers me most about this is that people who have Master degrees in genocidal studies, which is not just a huge focus on the Holocaust but also looks at all of history to study every genocide ever, are being silenced for saying that the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been ethnic cleansing and is now a genocide based on hundreds of years of studies, but most specifically the Holocaust itself. the Israeli gov't has been using some of the exact same tactics against Palestinians that the Nazis used against their targets, especially Jewish people, which is what makes Zionism so insidious right now.
