Apparently neopets not only managed to ditch the NFT bros, but with the closure of the Jumpstart brand weeks ago, neopets is now completely independent for the first time since the early 2000′s, got millions in a new investment deal and are currently installing a flash simulator so that all their games and animations work again.

i haven't seen this here yet so heads up

Wow, nothing says "We know we're either actively breaking the law or ABOUT to start actively breaking the law" like an arbitration clause that says that a site's users aren't allowed to sue them if they break the law.

Since the link further makes you click through to other links to find the info on how to opt out, you need to:

  • Send an email to arbitrationoptout@etsy.com requesting to opt out of the forced arbitration/class action waiver clause (Section 11).
  • You need to include your name, email address, username (found after '/people/' in the URL when you go to your user profile), and shop name (found after /shop/ in the URL when you go to your shop) if applicable.
  • You must do this by roughly mid-August, 30 days after the new Terms of Service take effect. Better to do it now before you forget.

Both buyers and shop owners can and should opt out.

You know, I've been thinking about the writer/actor strike in Hollywood, and like, I love it. I really do. They absolutely deserve better pay models and protection from AI. But do you know what would just be the cherry on top for me?

Hearing CGI artists are starting a union to demand better pay. That would just be *chefs kiss* to me.

they are called VFX workers and they HAVE been investigating the best way to do this for a while! they would be a part of IATSE, and you can follow their efforts here:

follow them on twitter and instagram!

Avengers star Mark Ruffalo says actors should “jump into indies” to create more competition in Hollywood.
According to Deadline, SAG-AFTRA will offer waivers in the form of an ‘Interim Agreement’ to “truly independent” productions during the ongoing actors’ strike, and Ruffalo believe this offers actors a unique opportunity.
“How about we all jump into indies now?” he said on Twitter. “Content creators create a film and TV-making system alongside the studio and streaming networks? So, there is actual competition.”
The ‘Interim Agreement’ lets independent productions continue despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which stops all guild members from undertaking any kind of production activity. According to the SAG-AFTRA website: “For independently produced content that comes within the scope of a strike order (the above-mentioned contracts), the producer may qualify for an ‘Interim Agreement’ that would allow such productions to continue working during a strike.”
However, Ruffalo sees this as a further opportunity to stick it to the studio system. “We just do what we always do — create great content and they can buy it, or we take it out ourselves and WE share in those sales,” he said. “They’ve created an empire of billionaires and believe that we are no longer of value. While they hang out in the billionaire boy summer camps laughing like fat cats, we organize a new world for workers.”
Disney CEO Bob Iger recently came under fire for saying the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA writers’ strikes have an expectation that is ‘not realistic’. However, Ruffalo seems to see this as a pivotal moment.
“One sure way to strengthen our hand right now is to become very supportive and friendly to all independent projects immediately,” he said. “Push every SAG-AFTRA member to join the ones that get SAG-AFTRA (WGA) WAIVERS immediately. The studios have no competition — this will change that.
“Share profits. If the project does well, everyone does well. This will also help our fellow filmmakers, ‘The Crew,’ who we love, to keep working. This is also part of Solidarity. We have to take care of each other.”

Wool-aid is always in need of woolen (at least 80% wool and absolutely no acrylic) garments, blankets, and blanket squares (10in/24.5 cm sq). They work with orgs that provide aid to populations regardless of race, nationality or religion, and which do not use that aid to further religious or political viewpoints. They request anything you donate not depict animals or ppl out of respect for Islam’s prohibition on such. Specific campaigns may have other guidelines - June’s campaign for Buddhist monks and nuns ask for items that are red or brown or gold (more comprehensive list on their site) to conform with the colors that the Buddhist monks and nuns wear.

They are in particular need of items to fit older kids and teens, and will provide the wool for you to use if you are in financial need of such.

Hey guys! The WGA is asking for people to sign a petition aimed against Universal. Treegate isn't the first union busting tactic Universal has tried.

They started a construction project that "just so happens" to block some of the sidewalks and forces picketers to walk in the street. The government told Universal they need to install safety rails to replace the sidewalks. A demand Universal has so far ignored.

Please sign the petition for Universal to install the safety rails and reblog.

Does anyone remember what happened to Radio Shack?

They started out selling niche electronics supplies. Capacitors and transformers and shit. This was never the most popular thing, but they had an audience, one that they had a real lock on. No one else was doing that, so all the electronics geeks had to go to them, back in the days before online ordering. They branched out into other electronics too, but kept doing the electronic components.

Eventually they realize that they are making more money selling cell phones and remote control cars than they were with those electronic components. After all, everyone needs a cellphone and some electronic toys, but how many people need a multimeter and some resistors?

So they pivoted, and started only selling that stuff. All cellphones, all remote control cars, stop wasting store space on this niche shit.

And then Walmart and Target and Circuit City and Best Buy ate their lunch. Those companies were already running big stores that sold cellphones and remote control cars, and they had more leverage to get lower prices and selling more stuff meant they had more reasons to go in there, and they couldn't compete. Without the niche electronics stuff that had been their core brand, there was no reason to go to their stores. Everything they sold, you could get elsewhere, and almost always for cheaper, and probably you could buy 5 other things you needed while you were there, stuff Radio Shack didn't sell.

And Radio Shack is gone now. They had a small but loyal customer base that they were never going to lose, but they decided to switch to a bigger but more fickle customer base, one that would go somewhere else for convenience or a bargain. Rather than stick with what they were great at (and only they could do), they switched to something they were only okay at... putting them in a bigger pond with a lot of bigger fish who promptly out-competed them.

If Radio Shack had stayed with their core audience, who knows what would have happened? Maybe they wouldn't have made a billion dollars, but maybe they would still be around, still serving that community, still getting by. They may have had a small audience, but they had basically no competition for that audience. But yeah, we only know for sure what would happen if they decided to attempt to go more mainstream: They fail and die. We know for sure because that's what they did.

I don't know why I keep thinking about the story of what happened to Radio Shack. It just keeps feeling relevant for some reason.

Declutter Tumblr

The new layout it a whole mess. Thankfully Xkit can already help with a bunch of this! I'm sure it'll give more options soon.

Vanilla Tumblr: (I have marked in red what can be removed. The tabs can be set not to stick, so you will really only see them at the top of your dash. Empty box on the left for hidden notifications and shop sparkle, i just didn't have any. I'm EU so no Live for me).

lmao tumblr letting their users choose whether or not they want their likes to be public but then pulling a twitter 2.0 and showing your likes on your followers’ dashboards and specially saying who liked the posts in their new update, without the users’ consent or a way to turn it off, is actually pretty insane.

like how many times to we — the users — have to tell them we don’t want tumblr to be like any other social media platforms and that tumblr’s being different than twitter, instagram, tiktok is actually what makes us stay on this silly little site.

respectfully @staff you’re driving your users away. stop trying to “fix” things that are good and don’t need to be fixed. we want tumblr to be tumblr. we don’t want the site to be twitter or instagram 2.0

WAIT LIKES AREN’T PRIVATE ANYMORE?

likes are still private if you choose 4 them 2 be. this is the "in your orbit" feature that's already existed 4 years; the only thing that's changed is that they've made it less obtuse what "in your orbit" actually means+how the feature works. if your likes are private, they will not be suggested, and most people have this feature turned off already. if you don't, you can switch it off in your dashboard settings. you can also make sure your likes are private from your blog settings

the top post on the changes blog says as much about this (you can see it here). i know tumblr has been going downhill lately but there's no need 2 panic about this

Reblogging for the last post - the setting to turn this off has been there for a while.

Go to ‘Blog Settings’ for your main Tumblr (so in this case, dreamsatdusk). There is a Likes section and a Following section if you scroll down. Here you have switches to turn off people seeing your Likes and Followers.

And under Settings > Dashboard, you can turn off seeing things due to other people’s like if you want too.

The United Auto Workers are also negotiating new contracts with the big three US car manufacturers and have announced that they're prepared to strike if they can't get a fair deal.

Every article here is about a different strike!!!

Also, Cornell University apparently runs a very comprehensive live labor action tracker!

Welcome to ~~~hot labor summer~~~ yall

If an actor actually WANTED to keep being a CG ai zombie puppet in movies after they died that should be up to them but the CG entity should get "paid" exactly as much forever and the money goes wherever the actor wants it to.
