Seven Indicators of True Salvation

Seven Indicators of True Salvation If you were put on trial for being a Christian, would the evidence of your life be overwhelmingly clear that you know Christ and that He knows you? Genuine salvation is a life-changing experience. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come”(2 Cor. 5: 17). Good works do not remove sins, nor can they save anyone. But after a person is genuinely saved and is truly transformed by Christ, specific good works will start showing up as evidence or proof of their salvation. These seven things are not the cause or roots of salvation, but they are the fruits of true salvation. The book of 1 John gives us seven key indicators of genuine salvation revealing that someone is truly saved and knows God.

  1.  A lifestyle of obedience to God. Though Christians stumble and make mistakes, the big picture direction and habit of a true believer becomes one of submission and obedience to Christ. They will want to read and follow God’s Word. The Holy Spirit in their lives bends them toward greater and greater obedience. What about you? Have you been living a lifestyle of obedience toward God? “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked”(1 John 2:3–6).
  2.  A confession of Jesus as the Christ, God’s Son. First John 2:22–23 says, “Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.” While cults communicate that Jesus was merely a good teacher or prophet, God’s Word says He is the Christ, the sinless Son of God, and the Lord of all. Do you openly confess that Jesus Christ is God’s Son, or do you believe Him to be merely a good teacher or prophet?
  3. A lifestyle of repentance of sin. Jesus said, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish”(Luke 13:3). Though we all stumble in many ways (James 3:2), true believers will be confessing and turning away from sin, while false believers will not. First John 3:9–10 says, “No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.”
  4. Genuine love for other believers. “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him”(1 John 3:14–15). God’s Spirit pours out God’s love into the hearts of God’s children (Rom. 5: 5; Gal. 5: 22). Do you have a genuine love for other believers?
  5. The discipline of God your Father. “See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are”(1 John 3:1). Even as a loving earthly father disciplines his children, God promises to discipline His children when they get out of line. He says this is one of the evidences of true salvation. “God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons… All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness”(Heb.12:7–8, 11). Have you experienced the clear discipline of your heavenly Father in your life?
  6. The presence of God’s Holy Spirit. “This is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us”(1 John 3:24). If you are a true believer, then God’s Spirit is in you and will testify with your spirit that you are a child of God (Rom. 8:16). He will also convict you when you sin (John 16:8), reveal what God’s Word says when you read it (John 14:26), and pour genuine love, joy, and peace in and through you toward others (Gal. 5:22). Have you been experiencing these evidences of the Holy Spirit in your life?
  7.  Faith in Jesus alone for salvation (and not yourself). “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life”(1 John 5:12–13). Or as Paul said in Philippians 3:9, “Not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith.” Have you been trusting in Jesus alone for your salvation, or trusting yourself or your church?

These seven things are signs of a changed life—litmus tests revealing whether God has really made you a new creation or not. They don’t come naturally and are impossible to fake long-term. The world, the flesh, and the devil are all against you doing these things and will push you in the opposite direction from them. But if you look at your life over the past few months from a fifty-thousand-foot view, do you see these things? Do you see a genuine love for other believers? Or not? Repentance of sin? Or not? Obedience to God? Or not? The discipline of your Father? Or not? The evidence of God’s Spirit? Or not? A confession of Jesus as God’s Son? Or not? A genuine faith in Jesus alone for salvation? Or not? If these indicators reveal a true relationship with Christ, then rejoice and rest in it. If they do not, then don’t put off the command of Scripture to repent and believe in Jesus Christ, placing your faith in Him alone for genuine salvation.

All praise to YHWH, God of Israel! All praise to the Lord Jesus Christ, by whom I am saved!

He hears all my prayers and He answers me! He takes care of my family and I, and He gives me way more than I deserve all the time! His kindness and mercy are limitless!

Blessed be the name of YHWH! Blessed be the name of the Lord Jesus Christ forever and ever!

How do you know if God knows you? I feel like everything is a trick when I hear and read about how He might turn you away and say He doesn’t know you. My fear is getting caught off guard and being turned away from heaven when all along i thought He had known me.

You won't be turned away if you've done/are doing what the Scriptures say about salvation. If you believe in the God of the Bible, and if you believe in Jesus Christ as proclaimed in the Scriptures, and if you trust in the Lord Jesus' finished work on the cross for your salvation, and if these beliefs have led you to repent of your sins and pursue a holy life out of love for the Lord, Jesus knows you. You belong to Him, and His Spirit is in you.

The ones who will be surprised and turned away are the ones who are trusting in their own works to save them, or else have never repented of their sins and are false converts who think of Jesus as a "get out of Hell free" card. How do I know this? This is what the Scripture says.

Matthew 7:21-23

"21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’"

Take note of v.23. What does it say? Jesus calls the surprised ones "...workers of lawlessness." The Scripture is very clear that if we disobey the Lord by trusting in our own works instead of His for salvation, we will not make it. Also, if we think that saying a prayer and doing some Christian things will allow us to live like devils and revel in sin and still go to heaven, the Scriptures say that we're liars, lying to ourselves and others (1 John 1:6). If our faith in Jesus doesn't cause us to repent of sins, that faith is useless (James 2:14-17). If we embrace sin as a lifestyle and refuse to obey the Lord, we have no part with Him, regardless of what we tell ourselves.

So don't be afraid. Believe that Jesus and Jesus alone saves you. Let your love for the Lord lead you to repent of your sins and worship Him with a holy lifestyle. And rest in His grace.

Hi Kreg,

So I have a question about salvation. I vividly remember accepting Christ as my savior when I was 11 because my teacher at school told our class about salvation. From that point on, I didn’t get truly rooted in a church, even though I was at a Christian school and even though I regularly attended church just for a little bit. As a result, I lived for years without really fully understanding the Word and unsure of how to approach issues of living in an ungodly world.

It wasn’t until during Covid in 2020 when I got serious about understanding what it means to be saved. I started having tons of doubts about my salvation and I even prayed a few times to “make sure.” Praying several times was also something that I tried to do when I was younger, starting at about 7 years old, until I finally just put it to rest at age 11.

But during Covid I prayed again and I truly felt like then I understood what it means to be saved.

I don’t know either one of those exact dates. And I don’t have a story of someone leading me to Christ like most others seem to have. This morning, Pastor said if you can’t give an exact testimony of your salvation, then it means you’re probably not saved. I feel like I can’t give that because I don’t have the dates and I always hear people give out the exact date that they got saved.

Heya.

Let me put you at ease, friend: Not every believer has the exact times and dates they got saved. If your pastor is suggesting that a certain kind of salvation experience is required that has to have a specific level of detail, then your pastor is really outrunning the Scripture.

Do you believe in the God of the Bible and the Lord Jesus Christ as the Scripture proclaims Him? Do you trust in the finished work of Christ on the cross for your salvation? If you can answer yes to both, and these have led you to repent of your sins and swear fealty to Jesus as your King, you are saved. Nothing else matters.

Psalm 116

"I love YHWH, because He has heard

my voice and my pleas for mercy!

2 Because He inclined His ear to me,

therefore I will call on Him as long as I live.

3 The snares of death encompassed me;

the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;

I suffered distress and anguish.

4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:

“O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!”

5 Gracious is YHWH, and righteous;

our God is merciful.

6 The Lord preserves the simple;

when I was brought low, He saved me.

7 Return, O my soul, to your rest;

for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

8 For you have delivered my soul from death,

my eyes from tears,

my feet from stumbling;

9 I will walk before the Lord

in the land of the living.

10 I believed, even when I spoke:

“I am greatly afflicted”;

11 I said in my alarm,

“All mankind are liars.”

12 What shall I render to the Lord

for all His benefits to me?

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation

and call on the name of the Lord,

14 I will pay my vows to the Lord

in the presence of all His people.

15 Precious in the sight of YHWH God

is the death of His saints.

16 O Lord, I am your servant;

I am your servant, the son of your maidservant.

You have loosed my bonds.

17 I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving

and call on the name of the Lord.

18 I will pay my vows to the Lord

in the presence of all His people,

19 in the courts of the house of the Lord,

in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Praise the Lord!"

Prayer Request

Hey guys, quick prayer request.

I can't remember, but I think I made a post a while back to tell you guys that I'm going back to school to become a Paramedic. If I didn't, hey, I'm going back to school to become a Paramedic!

I've jumped through a hundred hoops to get into the program at the state college for the fall semester, and there's one more now that might sink the ship. I have to have a physical and have a doc sign off on a sheet stating I've had all my vaccines (except the covid vax, that's not a requirement). I have had all my vaccines (having been in the military, I've been injected with more vaccines than I can name), but I can't find the records. My old PCP in New Hampshire doesn't have it. On top of this, my new PCP can't see me until well after the due date for the physical. So, I have to go to an urgent care for the physical and pray that the doc is willing to sign off on my vaccination sheet on just my word that I've had them. They can do a blood test for each vaccine (so I'm told), but I doubt they could get results on that in time.

Also, I got a second job as a driver for an ambulance company. So, I'm going to be working two jobs and going to school full time. This is gonna be super hard on my sleep schedule.

Please pray for me for all these things. Thanks guys!

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119‬:‭33‬-‭34‬

Teach me Your decrees, O LORD; I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding and I will obey Your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart.

How do I pray against the divorce, abuse ( in all shapes and forms) demon that seems to be haunting my family? I am almost done breaking a generational curse and the only reason I am here is because of God and Jesus knows EVERYTHING I have been through and this demon seems to have a hold.....

I strongly believe its abuse and lack of support and even though I am only 24 I need my parents !!!! I need them to have a healthy and loving relationship even though their is no love in this house and I know I cannot repeat this if I ever get married. Kreg I am scared......

Hey,

Don't be afraid. I'm so sorry you're going through this, I know how hard it must be. But don't be afraid. The Scripture promises that God will turn about all things for the good of them that love Him (Romans 8:28). Just pray constantly for the Lord's perfect will to be done. As often as you think of it, pray. Ask the Lord to save your parents marriage; ask the Lord to rebuke the Enemy and bring all his plans to nothing. And as you pray, trust in the Lord's mercy, kindness, and unfailing love. Even though this world is harsh and full of sorrow and heartache, the Lord will have His way in the end. There's a lot of peace in surrendering to that truth.

I'll keep you and your parents in my prayers. Be blessed!

Hi Kreg, this is a long one, so I apologize…

I am saved but struggle with some thoughts from time to time. First, I slip into thinking that the Christian life is boring and frankly miserable (this point is more linked to the second paragraph) I really don’t see how it’s interesting or how it can be fun. When I look up discussions on this, Christians just say, “It’s not boring” and then don’t elaborate. Respectfully, specifically what about it is not boring? I also don’t see many options for introverts like myself to have fun as a Christian. It seems that every Christian’s idea of fun has to involve going out in groups and doing things with other people. I feel ashamed that I think this life is boring, because it probably means that I’m not doing enough for God.

Another thought I struggle with is: how can I have joy when people I love may very well be on their way to Hell? I don’t know how I’m supposed to be content and at peace when I have loved ones who hate everything that God stands for.

Lastly, I also have trouble with comparing myself to others. I basically see myself as a loser Christian. Last week, a missionary to Tokyo came to speak to our Sunday school class and the main point of his message was that God wants to use each of us in a special way. I just don’t see it for me. I hate that I think this way, but I don’t believe God wants to use me in any extraordinary way. This missionary got saved in the US even though he’d never heard the gospel growing up in Japan. I’ve heard numerous testimonies from both pastor and other guest speakers at church where they got saved at a younger age and just kept growing more and more in the Lord. Meanwhile, I’m over here experiencing setbacks and struggling to stay on track. These testimonies are extraordinary and I can’t even remember the exact date that I got saved like most Christians can. I also had older relatives who have passed away and whose legacies are marked by their love for the Lord. To me, they’re legendary, while I’m ashamed that, even though they were model Christians, I’m nowhere near that. To know that these are the people that came before me and to know that these pastors, guest speakers, etc were/are so greatly used by God makes me not even want to try.

I also have a straight up question…does God bless you even if you’re not exactly walking with Him? Like, when you fall short, does He still bless you? I’ll admit that I have fallen short kind of a lot lately, and so whenever something good happens to me I don’t know if I should thank Him or not because I assume He’s not happy with me, so these blessings definitely can’t be coming from Him (or so I think). I’m also afraid of the possibility that He doesn’t deem me worthy of His discipline, which He only doles out for those who are, basically, walking with Him. I think that, if He were disciplining me, I would be going through more trials, not less of them.

Hello friend,

I'm sorry it's been weeks since you sent this. Life is crazy right now.

1) Boring is pretty subjective; depending on what you find fun, the normal Christian life can seem boring. We don't get into drinking, drugs, or promiscuous sex. We don't indulge in pornography, and we avoid a lot of movies and tv shows that glorify sin. That said, it's also true that a lot of movies and tv, and video games, music, board games, sports, and a lot of other things aren't sinful and are fully available to Christians to get into while glorifying God. When I have down time, I play video games, watch tv and movies, play board games, and every once in a while, get some nature by going to be beach or going on a hike. I also hit the gym multiple times a week. All of that stuff I find very fun. And I'm also a big nerd about theology and Bible study. Getting into the Scriptures, learning about God, seeking Him in private prayer and worship, and telling other people about Him is amazing. It's very much not boring at all. So, my advice is to try and change your perspective. Get into the Word, private prayer and worship. Once you experience God's presence, there's nothing else on earth that even comes close. And then find some hobbies to enjoy on the side; surely not everything you like is contrary to the Christian life.

2) Having joy in the Christian sense doesn't mean you're happy about everything all the time. It means that you understand in a foundational way that, although this life is full of tragedy and sorrow, God wins in the end; death is swallowed up by life, and our future in Christ is one of inexpressible happiness, where evil is finished, true justice is secured, and eternal peace, contentment, and satisfaction is ours.

We should be upset by our loved ones rejecting Jesus. We should care a great deal about it. We should let that concern fill us with an urgency to cry out to the Lord in prayer for their salvation, and drive us to share the Gospel with them as often as we can, in every way that we can. And once we're doing all we can, we rest in the knowledge that God is good, that He is perfectly fair, entirely just, and abounding in love and mercy.

3) Don't compare yourself to other Christians. You gotta stop it. Instead, focus on your own walk with the Lord. Read your Bible daily. Set aside some time specifically for prayer and worship and get alone with God. Ask for His help to conform your life to His commands. Focus on sharing the Gospel with the people around you that you know need it. And forget everything else. Let God be the one to decide how and when to use you. Work on being faithful in the little things and don't sweat the rest.

4) God blesses those of us who are in Christ because of Christ, not because of us. All of the promises of God are secured for us in Christ Jesus. You stand in His righteousness, not your own. So, yes, even though we're imperfect, God does still bless us according to His will. He also disciplines and corrects us when we misbehave. The best way to be is obedient to the best of your ability, to the best of your knowledge, all the time. And when you mess up, confess it quickly and get back to the obeying. This isn't so that God will bless you. Rather, we obey because we love Him and we want to worship Him with our whole lives, and because we want to glorify Him and be faithful witnesses for Christ.

I hope this helps! I'll be praying for you. Be blessed!
