A Conversation with Antonio Campos

Before anything else, in the interest of journalistic integrity I should admit to the following: I am absolutely Antonio Campos’s #1 fanboy (or, in this case, girl). I first became aware of Campos’s work five years ago when — still a New Yorker and still (kinda/sorta/sometimes on Wednesdays) trying to make acting my main jam — my scene study teacher was plucked for a role in AFTERSCHOOL (AFI FEST 2008). The work since produced by his film company — Borderline Films, comprised of Campos (writer/director: AFTERSCHOOL, SIMON KILLER), Sean Durkin (writer/director: MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE), and Josh Mond (producer of all three, in addition to numerous others), who met during their time in undergrad film school at NYU — has been nothing short of incendiary, engendering discourse and (gasp!) even agreement throughout the independent film world. Everyone digs these dudes.

Yet sitting down with Campos on Tuesday in Beverly Hills, it was immediately apparent that in spite of the Hollywood-hoover-cloud swirling just above him, Campos possesses one of the most calming demeanors I’ve yet to come across this go round the sun. The lull of his voice, the minimalism of his motions, and the intention behind his eye-contact — as though saying “yes, I’m here with you” — make it apparent why he is able to command such delicately tremendous performances. Actors trust him because he’s a guy you trust, plain and simple.

For 40 minutes, we chatted about SIMON KILLER, AFTERSCHOOL, the New York from which Campos draws his inspiration, and why existentialism shakes his cage, among many other things (such as why the choice of handle for the titular character in SIMON KILLER is not, in fact, a reference to the game “Simon says”….though if you’re reading, Antonio, I maintain that the hypothesis was not totally unfounded).

Here’s some of that conversation.

AFN: First of all, I just want to say thank you for meeting with me. I’ve actually been following you, and Borderline Films, since the casting stage of AFTERSCHOOL because I was in Alexandra Neil’s scene study at the time.

AC: Oh I’m so happy to hear that — I really like Alex. I had it in my head that Alex Neil’s character was sort of connecting the AFTERSCHOOL universe and SIMON KILLER. We were gonna put Brady (Corbet, who portrays the eponymous “Simon”) in a “Brighton Academy” (the fictitious school that serves as the backdrop for AFTERSCHOOL) sweatshirt, like he was the brother to the twins that died or something, but it was too much.

Since my blog is about sunrooms and the views they offer, I thought this was a breathtaking picture.

Just What Is A Sunroom?

Primarily, sunrooms are known as patio enclosures, solariums, patio rooms, and conservatories. As a result of all of the window panels, you get a good amount of sunlight and are protected from wind, precipitation, pesky insects, and undesirable weather conditions. a atriums is usually made to complement the appearance and design of your dwelling and is comprised of single or double pane glass. When seeking a cost efficient house improvement, sun rooms are an excellent answer. It's typically an increasingly practical way of adding square footage. It's a easy way to indulge in the outdoors in comfort. A 4 season room allows you to enjoy it all year round, whilst a 3 season room is best for the moderate seasons.

A look back at sun room over time

While hunting for a place to sit and take it easy at the end of a hard day, many early home dwellers simply used a covered porch. With time, this practice shifted to back patios. But the severe weather and pesky insects and noise prompted couples to spend more time inside than on their patio. Hence, enclosed patios began to be common.

As technology and cost for windows improved, people started to invest in storm windows and use them to enclose their patios, expanding the number of days they can enjoy the open-air space. Soon, the homeowners wanted more than just a functional nature room – they dreamed of something fashionable, as well. Hence the patio room – or sun room – business was launched.

Soon, fully enclosed patios and decks were being built with custom designs, professional installation, and full-service warranties.

These new versatile sunrooms extended the number of days household owners could take pleasure in the outside whilst being protected from precipitation, pests, and other outdoor annoyances. As technology advanced, sunrooms developed into being more energy-efficient, with insulated glass, vinyl framework, and more elaborate designs. Green houses and conservatories, which were formerly only favored in Europe, also began to pop up in the USA.

What Should You Look For In a Sunroom?

Your intended use will be the strongest factor in what to look for. That will define the size, design, and materials you will utilize. If your summers and winters are fairly mild, you can probably opt for slightly lower quality components or ask for a 3 season room and still be able to enjoy it all year round. The better designs will accommodate the design of your home and also be adaptable.

The quality of material as well as the quality of the builder will have a major impact on your satisfaction of the sunroom. If you decide upon a knowledgeable, experienced, and communicative builder, you are more likely to be very pleased with the sun room you end up with. And that's important, mainly because you are more likely to spend more days of the year in your sunroom and also simply because it's a highly visible extension of your home.! Since you probably would like to enjoy your covered patio for many years, now is the time to pay close attention to these things.
