I feel like if a vampire feeds on you without killing you, they should give you a lil cookie and cup of juice afterwards, like the blood donation center does.

Sure, Aussie magpies are scary when you get swooped, we've all been there. I've been there. But consider: you can befriend them. Whistle to imitate their song, slip them some delectable tidbits, and voila: you have new friends, who are birds. This is good.

Here's the secret: if you're careful and respectful and learn how to interact with them in a way that shows you're careful and respectful, you can befriend *any* bird on that list. Heck, any bird at all really. *this is not an endorsement for people just getting into birds' personal spaces or feeding wild birds or anything utterly ignorant and destructive along those lines

before y'all say impossible for cassowaries, I will remind everyone that they were tamed, domesticated, and reared as farm animals on Papua/Niugini/Niu Gini/New Guinea

"I have a theory that they're also smart enough to realise that people who talk to them are less likely to bother their nests. Because I've never been swooped in my entire life and I always say hi to every magpie I pass" ~ @itchylimpet

honest to gd, I think if you talk to any bird with respect and calm in your voice, and sincerity - ie, I don't think birds understand the words we're saying, maybe they do but probably not; I *do* think they can tell the emotions we're using behind our words based on a variety of different chemical signals and sincerity tends to imply respect and safety - they are likely to leave you alone.

I really and truly think the problems people have with birds are because they don't respect them. Either in their mannerisms or just in general.

As a kid, I lived near a pond, so I'd go out there to read. There were tons of Canada Geese. Tons. I would sit near this tree and just read books. And the Canada Geese? Never attacked me. In fact, over time, they started hanging out there, because I clearly wasn't going to bother them.

Meanwhile, Canada Geese on my college campus? would murder you over nothing, because they were used to every dumb college student treating them with disrespect, and couldn't afford to give any person the benefit of the doubt, even me. I got some cool photos of two fighting in midair though.

So, yeah. Birds aren't scary or not scary, it's just how people treat them that determines their temperament towards people.

THANK YOU @lesbian-batman. It's the sheer number of people who corroborate my hypothesis of "if you talk to a bird calmly and treat them respectfully and give them their space and follow their lead, none of them are going to attack you"

I don't know how, but birds understand tone. Words, no. Tone, yes.

honestly "giving enough personal space" and "speaking calmly" has worked on every animal (barring, yknow, wild deer and owls who do not care for humans at all and will turn the other way in any case) to get them to tolerate me. "how are you so good with that random street cat??" well idk man if you crouched down and let it approach you instead of walking towards it without even slow blinking itd like you too. there's really no secret to it yet people are always acting like im some kind of "animal whisperer" nuh uh i just get down on their level+dont harass them

yeah for real. this is what my idea of "respect" encompasses - meeting them on their level, giving them space, speaking calmly and clearly and meaning what you say so your actions follow your words, etc.

Essentially, treating them like you would treat an alien you suppose is sapient but you don't know how to speak the language. because the more we find out about animal intelligence, the more we see they're *all* a lot smarter than we give them credit for. Humans are just bad at figuring out other animals and we've just created a society where we look down on animals so people treat them like walking dirt instead of actual living beings.

This. My mom before even suggested that it would be ok for me to get in an animals face and pet something or whatever (dont remembr specifics) because im so good with animals or some kind of "animal whisperer". When no, the animals tolerate me bc of my behaviour and bc i specifically DONT do that kind of thing, not bc i have some kind of magic aura.

like for real. my friends often ask why I didn't try to pet the cassowary when I was 8, and I'm like, the reason I survived my cassowary encounter is because I didn't try to pet it

Same way with wasps. When one flies around my head I duck down a little bit and then freeze and don't move for a few seconds. Not sure why I've never been stung but I think flailing your arms freaks them out, and if you're outside a lot they recognize and know you're not there to cause any harm.

Sometimes social insects will just approach and fly circles around you to check you out I think. They're very smart.

The wasps in the Meadow are pretty chill and peaceful, anyway. I had one literally fly into my head and then get slammed to the ground when I shook my head instinctively, and it just dusted itself off and flew away.

You like fish!? Do you have any?

I gave one of my old 20 gallons to my gf and she!! Is making a lovely saltwater aquarium! I could share some pictures if you'd like.

i love watching fish going to the aquarium is like my go to date plan with my wife every time we get the chance. I haven't had any fish since I was very young (too young to properly take care of them <-former stereotypical fishbowl haver) but I've wanted to try to get some again and do it right this time

ALSO I WOULD LOVE TO SEE PICTURES

Aquariums are pog and jellyfish put me into a trance. Having a saltwater eco tank gives me the same feeling.

I'll admit my first experience with fish was similar, and there's a lot to go into about it, if you'd like, but to keep it short: the knowledge around keeping fish isn't what it was, and it's only continuing to grow. The communal knowledge of fish keeping is getting better. It is a complicated thing, and mistakes are *going* to happen.

Point being, you're not alone. The resources on this topic weren't very comprehensible even 4 years ago, much less 10 or 20.

There seems to be a lot more, and a larger community, now. The information is simply more attainable, and from what I can understand, reefers (saltwater hobbiests) are really big on sharing their knowledge and even corals and fish. If you can get into a network, you're gonna meet a lot of cool people and see a lot of cool things.

The tank is a bit empty rn because it's a new tank and she's building an ecosystem from the ground up. There's an algae bloom, but this is a good thing (can be bad, but this means we can get coral!! May even have some starting to grow now, because she bought live rock!). We bought snails today to address this issue!! OuO

Here is our pair of clowns! They seem to be paired. They have two nests in the corners, though I suspect they are abandoning one because they now have a lovely anenome! We're hoping to breed them!

They dance in a really lovely way. The bigger lady will swim under and in front of the smaller lad. This is dominance behavior! They cuddle to sleep, and their dance is a sway with the water flow. Back and forth and across. I don't have a video (the blue light is on so I can't get one rn, but I will later <3) but I must say, I feel an existential sentiment at watching these fish flirt and sleep and play. They are alive and loving 8^8.

The lady has calmed down a lot. She was in a tank with 3 other pals, and displaying a lot of pecking and aggression. Now, she is calm and inquisitive. I've heard a lot of people will get nipped when messing inside a tank with clowns. I've not witnessed it yet, pleasingly enough! I like to think theyre happy and comfortable.

Here is our anemone. She's a pinstripe(?) rock anemone. We got her a couple days ago, shipped, so she's still acclimating and picking a spot. She has currently set her foot upon the glass, between it and the rock, silly little thing.

I believe we're naming her Charybdis, based on the myth. I find this funny considering her placement atm, because the first artcle I found relating to the myth (can't spell) has this incerpt;

And then our plethora of snails and conch! Fresh in the tank!

The regional specifics are a guess. Thinking the two smaller nerites are Mexican. One turbo may also be a Mexican breed (?), and the other Australian. Dunno what kind of conch... But he's got his mouth and snorkel in the sand, and he's turning it just like wed hoped. You can only really see his eyestalks poking out.

However! If you peep that last turbo, he brought a hitchhiker! I think it's an Asterina Starfish! It has six lil legs! I love it but they can, and it may, eat algae. Another problem is that it can split. Even if the one doesn't eat algae, it's clone may, and that's not a risk my partner is willing to take, so unfortunately we're gonna have to remove it.

I can tell you all the specs of the tank if you'd like, and explain the process. I would honestly love to help if you have any questions!

new model / model update !! i've made a new custom player model, this time featuring my truesona! 🐮🌈🌼 i also updated @pepsipawz's model with new ears, hair, and a mane. there's some minor mistakes (weird butt cubes and texture issues) but, otherwise, i'm really happy with the two of them!

It is actually way better for 100 addicts to get their fix on pain pills than a single person in pain go without. I call this the "Torture is bad" principle. You should be able to get the good stuff forever after a single doctor's visit. If you're worried about addicts fund rehab centers and needle exchanges instead of torturing people.

"it's really fucked up your grocer can decide to cut you off of food because they're worried you're getting too fat. They should advise you on what to do to eat healthy, but they s shouldnt be able to starve you."

"Yes, but have considered that a lot of people eat really unhealthily, and that CORPORATIONS made food very tasty and addicting to get people to eat more? Therefore, grocers should still be able to force you into a diet."

having adhd and being a creator is like being on a timer. oh sorry you have this art idea? well you have approximately 12 hours to start it and 6 hours to finish the task or else you will lose interest and inevitably move on. oh you have an idea for a one-shot? well you’d better finish it in a day unless you want to banish it to your wips forever. ding dong bitch

if anyone needs me i'll be frothing at the mouth thinking about the origin of language and interspecies communication. happy wednesday.

how did we learn this? who taught us this? is it coincidental? is it observational? is it that something in the source of these sixteen languages stems from the same animal instinct that causes each of these species to call out to their own kind? I Am Going To Lose It.
