Matt Lanter & James Arnold Taylor at Star Wars Celebration 2023 Day 2

What is a quote from the show that's less quotable but more haunting, because it was difficult to get out in the moment?

ML: Well, it's not difficult to get out necessarily, but Anakin says something like, and it may not be verbatim, but something like "I realize, more than you know, I realize what it's like, wanting to leave the Order." [note: "I understand, more than you realize, I understand wanting to walk away from the Order." final words to Ahsoka in 5.20 The Wrong Jedi] and that says so much to me. It's something that we never really see Anakin kind of voiced that, he's sort of handcuffed, he felt chained, and he sort of voiced that to Ahsoka. It was such an intimate moment, I love that moment.

JAT: [Obi-wan voice] "It takes strength to resist the Dark Side. Only the weak embrace it." [5.16 The Lawless] That episode was haunting for me. We would get the scripts when we walked into the room. I did not know - spoiler alert! I think at Star Wars Celebration it's okay to say - In Season 5, Satine, I did not know what was gonna happen. So... when Obi-wan says "Satine..." under his breath, those are little ad-libs, those are moments that would just happen because it was heart-wrenching to be there and to be a part of that. Those moments are haunting, because I also think Obi-wan is a true believer. He wanted to see if he could save Darth Maul. He really believed there was a chance, with Ventress or with any of these people that he could maybe, save them. Or any of these people [points to Matt] "You were my brother!"

ML: "I hate you!"

JAT:  "Get over it." [laughs]

PLEASE. HOW DO YOU DRAW MAUL? HOW DO YOU KEEP TRACK OF THE TATTOOS HELP—

Are you asking for a tutorial? Cause I’ve never done one before so I am not sure how helpful this will be.

What I do is to look for references, get frustrated that I can‘t find any proper ones I like and about the fact that EVERY ARTIST MAY THEY BE OFFICIAL OR A FAN VISUALISES THEM DIFFERENTLY. This is the only reference I really use, and as you can see the quality is shit so most of the time I just say fuck it and don‘t even try to keep them accurate.

For fuck it to work however you of course still need to prioritise certain shapes so it looks close enough. I have shared my own personal prioritisation below and added some stuff that helps me remember them. Also in regards to his face, since I spend 5 hours several times a year to free hand his tattoos onto my own face, I am very intimately familiar with them and can therefore just add practice to the list of tips I can give you.

General stuff to keep in mind is that most of his lines flow into each other and follow the anatomy of his body in some way shape or form.

Usually I just start out blocking out the biggest black spots on his body.

Adding some more important shapes onto that, here your own stylisation and playfulness will drastically influence the end result, have some fun with it but try keeping the general direction and flow similar.

And then you kind of just fill the gaps with squiggles and flowing lines in the same shape language as the previous ones.

I hope this is at least somewhat helpful. As mentioned before just do not worry too much about accuracy, licensed art oftentimes does not seem to agree with itself anyways.

Ahsoka's Lekku Guidelines by Killian Plunkett

  • Top of head bone covered with skin
  • Around eyes is end of "bone"
  • Rear lekku 1/2 the flexibility of front lekku
  • Flexible to tip
  • General guidelines for Ahsoka's "head tails", also called "lekku"
  • Generally her head is "flesh", but down to the eyeline it is like a larger division of her skull
  • Below eyeline the "tails" are flexible like thick rubber, with the front 2 more flexible than the rear
  • General range: red = most extreme, green/blue = common
  • When in relaxed position, back lekku does not act on spine

Dave Filoni’s first Ahsoka sketches: the original vision for the Clone Wars series involved a band of misfit scoundrels, which included this Padawan. The group would have worked to aid the war effort by dealing with arms dealers and crime bosses, like the Hutts.
