Happy 2023, everybody! I’m kicking off the year with a couple of announcements:

1) I have started a Patreon! The only reason I’ve started this up is because I finally thought of some things to offer that felt original, worthwhile, and fun. This includes writing in-depth media reviews (January will be “Andor,” which I cannot wait to talk about), working Patron names into novels and comics, and potentially even monthly movie watch parties. I quit personally hanging on Twitter years ago, and the only thing I’ve ever missed about that was being able to share my full thoughts about the movies, tv, etc. that have had the most impact on me. So I really hope this provides a way for that to happen again.

2) If you are not inclined to join the Patreon, but you’d still like to know more about my upcoming events, releases, etc., then consider subscribing to my quarterly newsletter. Quarterly for now, at least--if I’m running into too many appearances that aren’t totally confirmed enough in advance, I may go to every other month. But either way, you won’t be inundated with information; you will be kept in the loop on the most important appearances, etc.

And if you just want to follow me here, my nerdiest and therefore probably most accurate social media activity, feel free. However you’re here, I’m glad.

The most beautiful footage of strangers dancing in public… https://twitter.com/Thorayaaa/status/1660180658646568967

its like a real life version of that children’s song with the magic bridge that you had to dance across

Highlights: --all the old people --one dude who starts doing the Cotton-Eye Joe and has the steps on lock --quinceañera girl with a dress bigger than the circle --lots of kids but particularly the dude who's doing the helicopter with his little girl --an entire section of Millennials doing dance moves I recognize, oh the nostalgia

--the dog that gets so excited he knocks over and spills the lady's coffee

HEY CALIFORNIA PEOPLE!

HURRICANE ADVICE FROM A FLORIDIAN!

Make sure you've got shelf-stable food and water for everyone in the house, including pets. The rule of thumb is a gallon per person per day. Freeze water bottles if you want cold water.

Make sure you have enough meds!

Make sure you have batteries, candles, flashlights, and a manual can opener.

Make sure your electronics, including backup batteries, are charged. Unplug things you don't want fried in case of a power surge.

Don't tape your windows, it doesn't help and you'll just be stuck scrubbing goo off of them later.

Put a mug of frozen water in it in your freezer with a quarter on top of it. If your freezer defrosts, the ice will melt and the quarter will sink and tell you you need to throw things out.

Get everything that's not nailed to a foundation out of your yard. That dead branch hanging on by a thread? Time to get it down (it was probably time to do that three days ago, but now’s better than never).

Park away from powerlines and trees if you can. Rain makes the ground soft and then trees fall over.

Have an evacuation plan to a shelter. Evacuate if they’re telling you to.

If you start to flood, don't go in your attic. You'll get trapped if the water rises too high and you can't hack through your roof. This happened to a lot of people in Texas and Louisiana. Get ON the roof.

Be safe, be well <3

What the fuck?

???? WHAT???

Ngl, "tropical storm in death valley" was not on my 2023 bingo card.

Drainage on our roads is shitty in SoCal, don't attempt to drive through water deep enough to touch your bumpers and don't attempt to walk across moving water, water only as deep as your ankles can knock you down and sweep you away.

Predicted wind speeds are similar to strong Santa Anas, so lock things down like you would for that, though keep in mind that yeah the combination of heavy rain and wind leads to more felled trees than just wind.

Take photos of the inside of your home now; flood insurance fucking sucks here and if you're in a possible flood zone you want as much documentation of your home and belongings as possible in case you need to make a claim.

Freezing water bottles also means you've got a lot of ice in your freezer if power goes out, and safe potable water once it thaws, so freeze bottles of water to have something to keep your fridge and freezer cool and store more water regardless of if you want cold water.

Peanut butter is a source of protein that requires neither refrigeration nor cooking--ie, basically gold, after 36 hours without electricity. So is canned tuna. Stock up on them if they’re still available.

Remember that you can charge phone/tablet/similar in a car (yours, a friend’s, whatever you can access) if you have the right chargers/cords. If by some chance you don’t have these already at hand, get them right away. That vehicle may also be where you to pay a visit to your good friend air conditioning for a little while.

Related: if you have a vehicle, fill your tank immediately. You and yours will need it, and if the power is out, gas pumps at stations won’t work.

Good luck and good wishes from New Orleans!

— If the meds were switched, then when I got them mixed up, I… I accidentally switched them back, so… I gave Harlan… — The correct doses, yes. But not accidentally.

KNIVES OUT (2019) dir. Rian Johnson

I love this moment, not just because of the twist, but also because Marta has been dying the whole movie with not only fear and grief, but guilt at having caused the death of her patient, her friend.

For Benoit to take the time to reassure that this was not her fault, in way that is so kind and so clear, was lovely.

“You are a good nurse.” You can tell when he says that the he truly understands what is paining her the most. Just beautiful.

I have so much love for this film, and for the moment following this where Benoit tells her that, if Harlan had listened to her, he would still be alive. The blame is taken from her, in the kindest possible way, by someone she trusts. After all the goalpost moving and ‘ah, gotcha!’ and obsession with spoilers in cinema over the last decade, with characterisation abandoned and plotlines left unresolved, knives out is a kind film. It isn’t obsessed with tricking you or catching you out, just wants you along for the ride

I love Benoit Blanc in this scene so much. I mean, he’s a great character throughout the film, but this was the moment I thought, “I will watch as many movies about this character as Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig choose to make.”

I am so sick of the trend of making intelligent male characters callous. And despite his veneer of slow Southern affability, Benoit Blanc is almost diabolically clever. So throughout the movie, I assumed he was toying with Marta, enjoying her discomfort because he found her suspicious. I thought he was another brilliant, heartless detective in the BBC Sherlock vein. But look at him in this scene. He practically has tears in his eyes because he’s so moved by Marta’s goodness, and I love him. I love this movie. I can’t wait for the sequels.

Another perk of libraries is that when I check out an audiobook and predictably fail to listen to it, it gets returned and I can rest easy knowing that checking it out at all has already benefited my local library. I can even do it again later and it will only bring further good things, for free, forever

VS buying an audiobook, failing to listen to it, and having to stare at it in my audible collection knowing I spent $10 on something I never used. And then imagine doing that again. Hellish. Get a library card and download the libby app

i want to add for anyone who’s stuck on “i want to get libby but i’m worried it’s gonna be a super long and complicated process”:

it took me about 2 minutes. most of that was waiting for the app to download. literally all you need to make an account is the name of your library system and your library card number. if you don’t have your library card handy, most library system websites will display your card number on your account page after you log in.

and if you don’t have a library card yet, most library systems will also let you apply for one online! my current address is technically serviced by two library systems; i just applied for a card at the one i hadn’t signed up for yet, and according to my timer it took about 81 seconds from opening the page to submitting the form. they immediately emailed me with my new card number, and adding that to libby took 37 seconds.

i love finding out the meaning of slangs for “attractive woman” in various languages

chick (english) - baby chicken Schnecke (german) - snail/slug sild (danish) - herring fıstık (turkish) - pistachio тёлочка (russian) - heifer ծիտ (armenian) - sparrow
