Well shit, Henry Jenkins, out here in 1997 dropping truth bombs

Oh hey I need this for a research paper I'm writing, thank you!

i mean he had been out here since 1988 dropping such bombs:

"'fandom' is a vehicle of marginalized subcultural groups (women, the young, gays, etc.) to pry open space for their cultural concerns within dominant representations; it is a way of appropriating media texts and rereading them in a way that serves different interests, a way of transforming mass culture into a popular culture"

Jenkins, Henry. “Star Trek Rerun, Reread, Rewritten: Fan Writing as Textual Poaching.” Critical Studies in Mass Communication 5, no. 2 (1988): 85–107. https://doi.org/10.1080/15295038809366691.

there are even some earlier works in fan studies but that’s what i have ready to hand.

Henry's been amazing for a long time.

it must legitimately be a hard time to be a tumblr user who happens to be a hot lady in a bikini who has never posted anything ever

every single time, i sit there with my finger hovering over the block button, briefly wondering if this is the one instance on tumblr of a real human being who simply loves wearing a bikini, typing emoji in the bio, and never making a single post

hey historical fashion tumblr what do you think about this costume i found in a catalogue

i do need to people to reblog this so it reaches historical fashion tumblr i wasnt joking

Hi historical fashion tumblr (person/professor) here.

Yikes oh wow what a find.

I wish I knew… German/ wasn’t in the middle of packing so I could look up the text. Could you tell what what delightful source material this is from?

If I were forced to try to identify what I’m looking at…

-the leggings are both the least and greatest issue so we will ignore them.

-the parasol is your go to lace parasol for vaguely Victorian-Edwardian, let’s say 1860s-1920.

-the hat is too small for her head. Just. Had to say that part. The hat itself is vaguely 1920s-1930s and then also 1960s-1970s. It’s sort of a cloche and the trim looks like they are trying to reference 1920s flapper things????

-that blouse oh boy. The contrast trim is just… not widely historically present on this type of thing so that automatically makes it rather contemporary looking? Peter on collars have been kind of a thing on and off since… the 1850s? This type of blouse with long sleeves will often be used as a costume for Mary poppins (Edwardian) but again the contrast detail is… yeah. Short sleeved makes it more 1930s-now in terms of… yeah.

-the lace mitts are sure a thing we’ve seen people wear since oh at least the Baroque/ at least the 17th century/1600s if maybe not a touch earlier?

Take all of these immensely disparate parts and you’ve got… a very confusing lady.

Seriously why the leggings?

we dont know anything about Benoit Blanc's husband except that hes called Philip but i want him to be a retired jewel thief who Benoit met during a case after he was hired to locate some stolen diamonds and Philip was posing as a gardener and Benoit kept asking him increasingly complicated questions about gardening so Philip thought he was onto him but really Benoit just thought he was hot and asked Philip out but the entire time Philip was like this is some kind of gambit so kept getting weirder and weirder until Benoit was like what is up with you so Philip confessed the whole thing and Benoit was like oh shit. but the guy he robbed was a total asshole so Benoit was like whatever it's fine so they started dating and the diamonds ended up paying for their apartment

i love how delusional some articles of clothing are, like you read the tag and its like “hand wash only/tumble dry on low” son you are a cotton tshirt. youre going in the warsh and whatever happens in there is in gods hands

working in an office is just like being in a horse movie except the horse is a printer. im the only one in the office who can make it work and its because the printer and i have a special bond. its a wild and untamable spirit and we are going to win the big race
