I just finished watching From Up On Poppy Hill, and I absolutely loved a lot of it, but like at the same time, I was not expecting that plot twist halfway through, if you haven't watched it yet, go watch it before you read this, cause I don't want to spoil it (I watched it on HBO Max like I watch all my Studio Ghibli)
Ok, now that only people who have watched or people who have been fully warned about spoilers are here, can we please talk about this movie. I need to talk about this (also if anyone wants to talk about Howl's moving castle, my neighbor Totoro, or Kiki's delivery service, I'd be down for that too, I just love studio Ghibli, the art, the peace of mind and calmness it brings, the characters, the plot, I just want to talk to people about this).
But anyway, back to From Up On Poppy Hill. Like it started out normal, I was watching like "oh Umi is given a lot of responsibility due to her mom leaving, is this going to cause tension later on (which didn't and I was way off with this part)"
and "Oh, Umi ran up to this boy who jumped into the lake, and she walked away embarrassed and angry while Shun is obviously infatuated, like most dynamics in these stories do"
and "Oh, they are trying to save the building, how will they do it" before them all banning together to give the house a makeover, frankly adorable, I loved all those scenes
and then this movie took a fuckin' 180 like
"oh, they can't be together cause they might be secret siblings, but they are still in love"
And like, I just audibly gasped, like "how could they just... What?" And like yeah, we find out in the end they aren't siblings, Umi's dad just like legally adopted Shun after Shun's parents died so Shun wouldn't go to an orphanage, before once again giving Shun away to friends when they couldn't provide for Shun, and they don't stop developing the relationship (not necessarily romantic relationship) throughout the siblings thing, and they make sure to say that they definitely can't be together and nothing romantic can happen if they are siblings, but they did have mutual feelings of romance before they found out, and it will be hard to just stop those feelings, and then just like that one scene where Umi is just like I love you, and I know we can never be together but that doesn't stop me from loving you and Shun is like same
it is kinda awkward, but kinda necessary to the storytelling to say we may be brother and sister, but that is hard to see you that way. They get it all cleared away and find out they are in no way related but this whole thing being so unexpected, it just hit me like a brick wall and I was analyzing why, and I think it was that they let you get emotionally invested before they bring this blow and so it hits different, and yeah, it had no major lasting effects on the story, but I just need to talk about this cause it just like gave me whiplash and I'm still like "what was that" and "why was I just sitting here hoping deep down they would reverse the siblings thing (which they did); if they are even questioning if they are related, I should not be rooting for this" and then I look back on it, and I realize that I was rooting for it because other than the sibling thing, this was a good relationship, they talked and they helped each other, they were healthier than most couples we see in media and there were just so many sweet little moments like this:
And so many more that I couldn't fit (cause 10 gif minimum), like all of these plus all the times they just walk and talk, when they ride Shun's bike down the hill, etc.
And just like, it was great storytelling to all of a sudden have this conflict because we found out like they did, and it makes the watcher go through the same things the characters do, because when we saw the relationship one way, it was hard to shift that, and so even though not a lot of us can relate (pun intended, deal with it), we still felt that emotional toll and that is what a really good story can do, make you sympathize without being able to really relate and it makes you look at a new perspective without actually encouraging the taboo, and it was just great storytelling-wise. One of the main reasons I see it as okay to ship Shun and Umi is because for me at least, I could not see them as brother and sister, and that was the point with the whole "we won't even foreshadow this before we expose this as a possibility", one thing they did was establish a different relationship between them, so when they told us brother and sister, it didn't process well and it was hard to shift over because the point was that once you know something, it is hard to do a complete 180. It didn't feel like shipping brother and sister because unlike shows like The Fosters, we didn't know they were brother and sister before they fell for one another, and by then, I feel like we all already knew they were probably going to take it back, and so the reason why this was such an interesting thing to analyze is the very nature of why they would throw this in and what effect it had by the placement of where it was in the film. Anyway, it just is clouding my thoughts and I wanna talk about this with someone cause I like analyzing shows and I wanna hear others thoughts on this part of the story or any other part of From Up On Poppy Hill you want to talk about
