Aging is *literally* the process of your body breaking down like an ancient and damaged machine. It's the epitome of the REAL definition of "degeneration" and people act like it's some sort of "beautiful natural process" no bitch it's literally a disease. It's a built-in kill switch your body has and science has proven this kill switch can be turned off with the right treatments.

Same goes for death itself. "Natural" body death can also be stopped with the right treatments - in fact, there's a lot of overlap between anti-aging treatments that could exist in the next couple decades and the anti-death treatments that could show up in a similar amount of time.

Everytime I see tumblr try to pull a "let's make it more like this other social media platform" I think of an experiment where Coke did a blind taste test against Pepsi products and found most people prefer the taste of pepsi so they changed their recipe to taste more like pepsi. The product performed terribly. Shockingly, the people who preferred pepsi were just going to drink pepsi and the people who preferred coke didn't want a drink something that tasted like pepsi. People choose social medias and basically anything for what differentiates them from alternatives

This post made me think about how in Rose's Scabbard and Sworn To The Sword Pearl puts her importance to Rose in terms of what she can do for her. If you listen to Pearl, their relationship sounds pretty transactional on Rose's side. Pearl emphasises her importance to Rose with the 'jobs' she's doing for her. She can keep secrets Rose wouldn't trust anyone else with. She can fight for and protect Rose with her life. Even when she's arguing with Greg in We Need To Talk she defaults to "You're no threat to me because I am a Gem who can fuse" rather than, I don't know, anything about her actual emotional bond with Rose?

Listening to her, it's no wonder many viewers would initially come to the conclusion that Pearl's romantic feelings, or even feelings period for Rose were unrequitted, and that Rose valued Pearl more as an ally than anything else.

But then we see Rose's side of it and Pearl's abilities aren't a factor in her affection for Pearl at all! In fact, I don't think I recall a single instance where Rose even mentioned things Pearl can do for her as a positive. More than that, every time the acts of service Pearl treasures so much come up, Rose seems more worried than anything.

Judging from Pearl's flashback to her arguments with Rose in Sworn To The Sword it sounds like Rose was actually actively distressed about the very acts that Pearl seems to regard as the foundation of their relationship.

When Rose actually expresses positive feelings for Pearl, we get this:

Rose emphasises simply being with Pearl. In a world where they can be free and at peace and Pearl would never need to take on any burdens for her. She doesn't want Pearl to do anything for her, she just wants Pearl.

Where is my point? I had a point. Oh, right!

Pearl seems to determine the strength of her relationship with others, especially Rose, by how much she can do for them, and doesn't realise that her loved ones not only love her for herself, but would, in fact, appreciate if she stopped throwing herself into the meatgrinder for one second, we mean it, Pearl, Rose is getting the gem equivalent of dehydrated.

(Rose, of course, takes all of this as evidence that her existence is causing everyone she loves to suffer and they would be better off without her)

one thing I think about a lot with Gems is that, especially prior to them respectively coming out of their shells for the Crystal Gems in later seasons (and it still applies to the Homeworld Gems and Little Homeworld citizens in Future) is that they define themselves by role and purpose. Not necessarily their sense of worth, though that IS part of it (as Pearl demonstrates!) but their function.

Gems are, quite literally, made to fulfill a purpose. Homeworld Gems are to some degree content with that, though they do feel free to stretch it later on, while Crystal Gems want to redefine it, but in general Gems almost always define themselves by function and purpose, and this has some particular details with Pearl, because she goes farther than almost any Gem in radically breaking free from her original purpose but still defining herself by it in some ways.

Pearls are living accessories; they appear to have some function as assistants in some way, but for the most part they’re not really expected to do anything on their. Pearl, conversely, is a fighter; she’s taken the grace and agility of a Pearl and applied it to deadly combat effect, and contextually she’s really terrifying. She is by far the most extreme example of a Gem deying their purpose and function. She redefines her function as a warrior.

But at the same time, as noted, she thinks of it as transactional; as much as she breaks free of that role, she still DEFINES herself through acts of service, particularly to Rose. Of note, it’s clear Rose DIDN’T like how self destructive Pearl could be (which pretty much shoots down people who assume Rose was just using her, or molded her like that; its a big part of Rose that she wasn’t good with people and had no idea how to keep Pearl from doing that to herself besides trying to end fights before Pearl got the chance to go extreme).

So a lot of Pearl’s character development is based on her outgrowing this mentality in a way that Rose wanted to help her with, but couldn’t figure out how; going from a transactional mentality that was still rooted in basic Pearl function, to being much more free spirited in a way interestingly similar to Rose herself without consciously modeling her after... unless BOTH of them were trying to be more like that type of person, and Pearl was ultimately able to do so in a way that Rose wasn’t quite able to?

Tumblr Migration 2: Reddit Boogaloo

We all know about the Twitter immigrants, but there seems to be radio silence on what's happening now with Reddit users from certain subreddits doing a similar thing.

What's happening?

Reddit is restricting their API later this month and killing off third-party apps. An AMA (Ask Me Anything) with the CEO Steve Hoffman was held and it was clear that he would continue with the changes.

In protest, thousands of subreddits across the site are planning to go dark for 48 hours on June 12th. Some are planning to continue indefinitely until the changes are reversed.

Okay, so how does this affect Tumblr?

Some subreddits (mainly queer and left-leaning meme ones, don't worry too much about Reddit Atheists™ overrunning us) are encouraging their users to jump ship to our beloved - and beloathed - hellsite. There will be another influx of new users and many will be unfamiliar with how the site works.

What do us Tumblr users do?

Show them how to use the site; introduce them to the site's culture, tell them to reblog shit and curate their dashboard. Sorta like how we welcomed Twitter users back when they flocked here. Kungpowpenising optional.
