I am once again begging people to understand that there is such a thing as a "personality" and you should try having one.

My roommate and I are disabled and he's currently bedbound from life-threatening complications from celiacs. We are behind on rent and need food and transportation to get food. The goal below covers food, the rent we owe, and next week's rent. I have been trying to fund us through this emergency and things are just getting more difficult.

I was planning to drop the items from the linked tweet thread onto this post, but there are SO MANY new bills that it became a wall of text - line after line after line of incredible things Minnesota has enacted in a single session.

  • Marijuana will be fully legal starting in August, but the bill also wipes past criminal records and sets up marginalized communities to benefit from the new incoming profits.
  • voting rights are restored immediately after leaving prison, probation is capped, and phone calls for prisoners are free now.
  • there are so many labor rights being added i can't begin to list them. an end to non-compete clauses, paid sick and family medical leave for the WHOLE STATE, unemployment for seasonal education workers, safety regulations for workers in warehouses and nursing, establishment of minimum wages for gig drivers!
  • carbon free electricity by 2040
  • cutting child poverty by 1/3 immediately
  • price caps for high cost pharmaceuticals
  • more funding for public transit, public defense, education, homelessness prevention, and the removal of ALL lead pipes in the state water system
  • roe v wade is codified, conversion therapy is banned, and other state's anti-trans bills are blocked for anyone receiving gender related care here.
  • undocumented immigrants can get drivers licenses and basic healthcare through the state
  • improvements to our already robust voting rights
  • basic gun safety laws, like background checks and red flag laws

I'm.... actually blown away. the political landscape often feels so hopeless, but the DFL pulled themselves together, getting every member on board for these changes - real changes that are going to protect health, keep people out of jail and housed, and improve work conditions massively. this should be a beacon for every other state democratic party - change doesn't have to be incremental. things can get better and they can get better right now. get crackin'.

Xenogender kids are the gift that keep on giving

Look at this. Anti-trans bills popping up everywhere, plenty of them being passed and written into law. One state (Arkansas) literally cites a cat xenogender as the reason for their anti-trans law.

And you mogai-using narcissists still can't pull the freaking redwood tree out of your eye and you continue to call transmedicalists "bullies".

Look at what the hell you've just done. We have regressed back years and years because of you. We were so close to a widespread acceptance of transgender people in America, non-binary not even that close behind. And now, only six years later…people are grouping transgender people with "transspecies" lunatics.

I know you'll pull the excuse of "but they were transphobic to begin with!!!!!!1!!1!!!!". My dad was accepting of transgender people, genuinely curious about the topic, and then became horrified when his friend's daughter came out as a non-binary void. You can say it all you want, but gender is not a social construct. And this is not going to last forever.

Looking at the bills and how so many adults are starting an uproar against transgender people, I can guarantee that you mogai people are going to face laws in the way of making people accept your insane identities. You should be ashamed of yourselves for speaking over actual, real, dysphoric transgender people. Especially dysphoric teenagers, the ones you claim to be helping.

Of course, the amount of detransitioners and anti-trans bills will be incredibly high, so dysphoric transgender people will, of course, have to work around that and try once again to make themselves seem normal in society.

Xenogender kids. You are making things worse.

i bet OP feels really fucking stupid making the claim that six years ago we were close to trans acceptance and we regressed to trans genocide because of xenogender kids considering we now know that this assault on trans rights has been deliberately orchestrated by the same groups since at least 2016, seven years ago.

look. i know, psychologically speaking, it is incredibly difficult to cope with the fact that these people hate us literally just for existing. we did absolutely nothing wrong, nothing to deserve this, and still they want us miserable and suffering on the fringes of society or dead. i know it is easier, as a persecuted minority, to look at an even tinier minority and say “there’s the problem!” i know it is easier to conclude that if we just got rid of the xenos and the tucutes and the freaks that they would just leave us alone.

that was never going to be the case, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you accept the reality of our situation. no amount of exclusionism or fakeclaiming or respectability politics was EVER going to prevent this or get us out of this.

literally on my fucking knees begging and pleading for cis allies to stop saying things like “no trans kid is getting surgery” “no trans kids are transitioning” “trans kids just take reversible puberty blockers until they’re older” because these statements are not only demonstrably false, therefore giving transphobes an open window to completely debunk your argument and boost their own (”if it’s not happening why do you care if it’s made illegal?”), but you are not helping us or protecting us and our rights. you are hurting us.

i started hormones when i was 14 because psychological and reversible medical treatment did not ease my dysphoria enough to improve my quality of life! me, my family, and my doctor(s) decided that hormones would be the best next step to help me, so that’s what we did! trans kids DO take hormones, and they DO occasionally get surgery, and that is COMPLETELY FINE!! because preventing a family from accessing what they and care providers decide is the best healthcare for a child is CRUEL AND UNETHICAL.

multiple studies show trans people who are forced to wait until late adolescence or adulthood to medically transition have worse mental health than both their immediate peers and continuing on into adulthood.

if i hadn’t started HRT when i did i would have flunked out of school or killed myself before i turned 18. trans kids have a right to access best practice medical care, whatever that may be for them.

i keep seeing jokes about Imagine Dragons showing their support by performing for WGA strikers, like about how bad their music/singing is and jokes about how it’ll hurt the movement and normally i’m neutral to the hatred of popular/used to be popular things, but GOD. as a queer ex-mormon i so badly wish more people knew what this group and what specifically Dan Reynolds has done to support queer kids

also while im here Enemy (the arcane song) is also about queer mormon kids <3

I absolutely hate how people took a kind, progressive, good band and decided to give it the nickelback treatment.

(Frankly I don’t even necessarily think they’re bad, sound wise, either. But I guess music is subjective so if you disagree that’s your right, just don’t treat it as some kind of unilateral truth)

My cousin (who is a christian fundamentalist and a massive homophobe) once mocked me for liking the band as an atheist because they’re religious, and I just went silent because I didn’t feel like getting into an argument, but

Like

Dan Reynolds has been an outspoken ally for a while.

Gee, it’s sure a funny coincidence he and ID got branded as cringe. I wonder what motive someone could possibly have to do so.

I got the honour of seeing Imagine Dragons live, and, a. they’re fucking GOOD what the FUCK especially live, like their music style has changed over time and it’s fine to not like that but the live performance was just so passionate and wonderful, and b, I can’t coiuldn’t take any pictures of it but one of the guitarists has a trans flag guitar with a trans flag strap and it’s so fucking beautiful and I nearly cried when I saw that clear and open support in such a subtle way. I’m glad someone else put into words how fucking annoying that attitude has been towards them with the strike.

How it's going as a trans person in Florida: Planned Parenthood, 26Health, and Spektrum Health have announced they have paused all gender affirming care.

To recap, DeSantis signed several anti-trans bills into law this week. Care is banned for minors, care is all but banned for adults, Don't Say Gay has been extended, children can be kidnapped from affirming parents by non-affirming family, and there is a bathroom bill that subjects trans folks to arrest for using government owned facilities, such as those in courthouses, airports, many stadiums and parks.

The adult effective ban was felt immediately. The main elements are:

  • signing at every visit an in-person informed consent form created by the state
  • all care come from physicians instead of nurse practitioners
  • no telemed for gender-affirming care

Currently, it is unknown if existing HRT prescriptions written by NPs will be honored by pharmacies. I personally know one person who was able to pick up testosterone yesterday, but I have also read many reports of folks being denied. I myself don't have a refill ready for another 10 days and will report back after I try my own pickup.

What's additionally dangerous is those of us, myself included, who get non-HRT prescriptions from our gender clinics now face the uncertainty of continuing of *all* of our medical care. Our health clinics are at risk of shuttering permanently as they lose major income, and many of us will lose STD meds, depression meds, heart meds, etc, etc.

When we say "this will kill us," it goes beyond suicide risk from forced detransition.

"But you can still get HRT from a physician."

So many suck or are outright hostile and the demand outstrips the supply. Before I found my NP-run clinic, one physician just decided to not call in my Rx, another was so shit at reading lab results, he thought I had hepatitis, and the third I had to threaten to kick in the teeth for trying to force too large a speculum in me.

Also, the state-required consent form has not been finalized and distributed yet, so at this point, everything has pretty much ground to a halt.

It was estimated that 80% of trans adults would lose their healthcare because of how many use providers like Planned Parenthood, but the impact seems even greater now.

"You can get your non-gender care elsewhere still."

DeSantis recently signed a bill that allows healthcare professionals to discriminate against trans people.

Sure, we can try to find care elsewhere, but it will be a slow and expensive process, with no guarantees. It took me over 20 years to get my heart condition treated because of transphobic doctors.

What can I do as a trans Floridian?

Stay in communication with your clinic - many are working on getting physicians added to the roster to prescribe HRT. Lawsuits are being filed and it's possible the changes to adult care can be rolled back.

Continue to try to pick up your meds, but begin looking for care elsewhere, though. Inside and outside the state.

Remember that while telemed for gender affirming care has been banned, you can still cross state lines for care. See Erin's map of informed consent clinics.

Many people will turn to DIY, but be sure you are aware of the risks here, especially if on testosterone, which is a controlled substance.

What should I be worried about next as a trans Floridian?

I worry about the following next steps towards genocide:

  • Banning getting care out of state. This is from the anti-abortion playbook. They will likely start with kids again, but we've seen how quickly adult care gets axed.
  • Being declared mentally incompetent or a risk in some way. This could be anything from being barred from gun ownership to not being allowed to work for the government.
  • Being declared a de facto predator. This has already happened with the latest bathroom law (cis people can eject trans people from government owned single-gender facilities, with arrest as a penalty), so watch out for it being applied to privately-owned facilities. Watch for discussions of official lists of trans people.
  • Gender presentation enforcement laws, essentially banning "cross dressing". Laws that block or rollback documentation changes.

These all have historic precedence and are huge "I'm in danger" red flags.

What can I do as a cis person?

Amplify all this news. Talk frankly about how this is genocide. And donate what you can to trans mutual aid campaigns so people can travel to get healthcare or even leave the state.

Here's some articles to get started on building awareness:

Take care, everyone, of yourself and each other.

As a trans person in a country where being queer is illegal (syria) right now, my heart goes out to all trans people in the USA, you aren't alone and I promise you'll never be, no matter what they try to do to erase you you will never disappear, but I truly hope this can be stopped and reversed before it gets to that point, please never stop fighting, we believe in you.

literally on my fucking knees begging and pleading for cis allies to stop saying things like “no trans kid is getting surgery” “no trans kids are transitioning” “trans kids just take reversible puberty blockers until they’re older” because these statements are not only demonstrably false, therefore giving transphobes an open window to completely debunk your argument and boost their own (”if it’s not happening why do you care if it’s made illegal?”), but you are not helping us or protecting us and our rights. you are hurting us.

in the latest cyber-news: the internet archive has lost their case against 4 major publishing houses (verge article). they’re going to appeal, but this is still a bad outcome. the fate of the internet is currently hanging in the balance because 4 multibillionare publishing groups missed out on like $15 of combined revenue during the pandemic because of the archive’s online library service. it’s so fucking stupid.

for those who don’t know what the internet archive is, it’s a virtual library full of media. books, magazines, recordings, visuals, flash games, websites - a lot of these things either don’t exist anymore or cannot be found & bought. heard of the wayback machine? that’s part of the internet archive. it is the most important website to exist, and i don’t say that lightly. if the internet archive goes down, the cultural loss will be immeasurable.

so how can you help?

  1. boycott the publishing companies involved in this. they’re absolute ghouls, frankly, and don’t deserve a penny. the companies involved are harpercollins (imprints), wiley (imprints), penguin random house llc (imprints), and hachette book group (imprints). make sure the websites are set to your location as it may differ worldwide.
  2. learn to torrent. download a torrent client (i recommend transmission), a vpn (i recommend protonvpn - sign up and choose the area that’s closest to your continent/country), and hit up /r/piracy on reddit for websites. with torrenting, you can get (almost) any media you want for free in high quality, with add-ons such as subtitles, and with no risks of loss. i would also recommend getting into the habit of watching stuff online for free. the less you can pay to a giant corporation, the better.
  3. get into the habit of downloading and archiving materials. find a TB external hard drive, ideally the higher the better. it’ll probably cost around $60 for 1TB and continue to go up, but they’re so so useful. if you can’t afford a drive, look for any GB harddrives or memory sticks you have lying around and just fill them up. videos, pdfs, magazines, songs, movies, games - anything you can rip and download and fit on there, do it, because nothing is permanent.
  4. donate to the internet archive. this is the most important option on the list. the IA relies entirely on funding, and it’s going to need more to fight this case. whatever you can donate, do it. i promise it’s helpful.

and finally…

cannot stress enough that donating to the internet archive to help them appeal this without going broke is the most important thing you can do right now. my day job revolves around fulfilling digital article and book scan requests at an academic library and a huge part of that is borrowing from other libraries that do controlled digital lending (incl. the internet archive!). copyright law is already hugely restrictive on what we can and can't lend, and we absolutely don't have the option to pirate anything for our patrons due to being a large academic institution. it's difficult to overstate just how bad this ruling could end up being for libraries that have digital lending programs, esp ones that rely on CDR for old/archival/hard-to-find texts.
