Listen my dudes Ancient Egypt existed for a really fuckass long time. Literally just Pharaonic civilization lasted 3,000 years. That’s not even including predynastic civilization and Roman rule. If you lump that in you’re looking at more like… 5,000 years. Like. If you want a comparison of how long that is: THE YEAR IS CURRENTLY 2018. TWO THOUSAND. TWO-THIRDS OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN PHARAONIC CIVILIZATION HAVE HAPPENED SINCE THE ‘BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST’ We comparatively just entered the Third Intermediate Period. The Greeks will not take over for another 700~ years. Cleopatra will not be born until the year 2931.

It’s a really long time guys.

Slavs: Have free healthcare Also slavs: I’m not seeing the doctor unless dying, there are sick people there

I em Slavic, and this is 90% true

however, you got one thing wrong

Only snobs, hipsters, and fratboys drink foreign brands

Nonono this is a good cola. It’s the party cola. This is the cola you drink and enjoy. Coca cola is the cola you have stored in your home for months in case someone gets sick, that’s its only use. The scientific explanation (the scientist is my mother) is that american Coca Cola has more evil chemicals, therefore it vibe checks the evil out of your stomach.

The metropolitan museum of art put a lot of their books out for free download and of COURSE I went straight for “The Art of Medicine in Ancient Egypt”. My favorite part was this amazing section on the Edwin Smith papyrus and the cases outlined therein -from reading these, honestly I’d trust Ancient Egyptian doctors with my broken bones / “mild” trauma wounds, though they seem to have been capable of effectively treating wounds that seem incredibly serious / life threatening to me!! The inclusion of honey was a frequent trend for wound healing in ancient medicine, and it does have bacteriostatic properties that would more effectively prevent infection than anything else they’d have lying around.  And if you’re wondering about the meat, SPEAKING of infection (+ some other cool notes here):

Hi y'all! Folks wanted me to explain how I draw mouths, so here it is! Nothing super complicated, just a really quick and simple demonstration. Another quick note I’d like to add- I’ve always been taught that you should never learn to draw features outside of the face. For example - A lot of young artists will recognize that they need to practice drawing eyes, but then after hours/days/weeks of practicing they find themselves unable to work all this new drawing ability into an actual face. Same thing goes for mouths/noses/brows etc. Get the bulk of the work out of the way on the first attempt! Draw the whole lower half of the face!

He doesn’t even know, and he doesn’t want to.

I don't go here but I feel like "It's a metaphor. Don't force it to do the work of a fact." is a great statement about literature and fan-content in general.

Hugh Ferriss, Architectural Renderings, 1910-1940
Ferriss was a fascinating illustrator and archetect whose drawings influenced not only people in his field but aslo popular culture touchstones such as Batman and Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow.
On a personal note, he also worked for my grandfather.

1. Freedom vs Safety

2. Success vs Selflessness

3. Progress vs Preservation

4. Individuality vs Community

5. Privacy vs Transparency

Excellent tensions to consider when plotting your story

responsiveness vs accountability – captain america civil war, and also all the cop shows where one partner’s a rulebreaker and the other is by-the-book.

Hard Mode:

Toss out dualities, introduce triads.  Find noble goals and put them into conflict.

Freedom vs. Justice vs. Peace

  • Freedom destroys Peace and denies Justice in the service of ensuring everyone’s maximum personal freedom.
  • Justice destroys Peace and limits Freedom because Justice requires people be held to account for their actions.
  • Peace denies Justice and quashes Freedom because holding people to account makes far too much noise.

ex: Concrete Revolutio

My D&D deities are organized into like a dozen triads despite there being only like nine of them it’s a little bonkers.

The Good Bloc

LG: Civilization NG: Creativity CG: Compassion These are all principles a society needs. One without any one of these is doomed to fail. You need a social contract, some sort of law binding everyone together. You need creativity both to innovate and progress but also to handle the struggles life throws at you. And you need compassion, so those laws and those inventions don’t supersede people in importance.

The Neutral Bloc

LN: Natural Law TN: Fate and Fortune CN: Survival Instinct

These three are all things we ascribe to things outside ourselves. Ye cannae change the laws of physics, Lady Luck is stone blind, you can’t fight instinct, etc. They’re all things that affect society, without necessarily being OF it, or maybe because they predate it.

The Evil Bloc

LE: Misrule NE: Apathy CE: Neglect

Full disclosure, I hate the shit out of Nietzsche and nihilism in general so fuck it. But these are all evils that come from the perversion of a society (they all have personal equivalents as well, but I like these terms).

But wait! There’s more! (I’m so sorry to anyone who reads this) The gods aren’t just in analogous triads, there are complementary ones as well. For instance, Civilization vs. Natural Instinct vs. Tyranny. Or Creativity vs. Luck vs. Neglect, the idea being you could be skilled or gifted but ultimately waste either.Or even Mercy (CG) vs. Justice (LN) vs. Antipathy (NE). How much do we treat people with forgiveness versus expecting retribution for their wrongs, or do we just say “fuck it, let everything burn?”

The point is oh god i put way too much thought into this but I still love it.

HOLY HELL

Not only is this fascinating, there are a lot of images from art history here. It just goes to show that what you can learn from the past isn’t limited to facts you can know, but things you can do.

My favorite part?

Lars Andersen originally started using bow and arrow to fight in pretend battles during Larps (live action role play) events, where he played a soldier in a medieval-inspired army. While Larps can be about anything – the Danish/Polish Harry Potter inspired larp College of Wizardry (cowlarp.com) recently got world-wide media attention and there wasn’t a rubber sword in sight there – many Larps take place in fantasy worlds inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. And it was at one of these Larps, that Lars started to learn to shoot fast while moving.
In 2012, Lars Andersen released his video, “Reinventing the fastest forgotten archery”, where he showed how he had learned to shoot from old archery manuscripts. Using these old, forgotten techniques, Lars demonstrated how he was now the fastest archer on the planet, and after its release, the video got 3 million hits on YouTube in two days.
Since the 2012 video was released, Lars has studied and practiced, and he is now able to fire three arrows in 0.6 seconds – a truly stunning feat making him much faster than the legendary fictional archer Legolas (played by Orlando Bloom in the Lord of the Rings movies).

The time benchmark he was trying to achieve, according to the video, was the expectation of the speed at which “Saracen” archers were expected to shoot. In fact, most of the source material as far as I can see isn’t European.

A lot of the techniques described are also used in Mongolian Archery, which requires being able to shoot from horseback, and is traditionally practiced by men and women. You can see a video here.
