How to Make Quick and Easy Tattoo Sleeves

Got a cosplay idea but the character has lots of arm (or leg) tattoos? Don’t feel like painting on yourself with body paints or hunting down that horrendously expensive temporary tattoo paper? Here’s a quick tutorial for making tattoo sleeves using nylons and sharpie markers!

Upsides:

- Supplies are cheap! You may even have many or all the supplies you need right at home.

- Quick and not very messy! No paint is involved, and sharpie marker dries instantly.

- Easy! Great artistic skill not required.

- They move with your skin! People have legit thought these were real tattoos. From a distance, yes, but I had guys at cons with actual ink on their arms come over to compliment on my full (fake) sleeves.

- You get to eat pringles! More on that later.

Downsides:

- They are delicate. Nylons get holes in them super easy and forearms run into stuff, lean against things, and generally make it hard for the sleeves to survive. But if you only need them for a weekend, that’s ok.

- I haven’t experimented too much, but unfortunately this technique probably doesn’t work for wearers with darker skin tones. Sharpie ink is transparent, so any color it rests on just multiplies and the tattoo won’t show up very well. You’ll want to go the fabric paint or body paint route to get the best bold, bright tats.

- Can’t do white sections, because sharpie ink is transparent and doesn’t come in white. I leave them blank and they read OK, but the white areas will always be pink, tan, brown, etc. unless you dab in a little fabric paint, which will not be covered in this tutorial.

- Sharpie is supposed to be permanent marker, but on skin…it’s not. The ink will most likely wear off onto adjacent clothes. Not that big of a deal for me, as I tend to wear my tats with white shirts that can be bleached, but other shirts may not survive as well.

OK, let’s go! Here are your supplies:

You’ll need a pair of nylons, scissors, tape, a set of sharpies, your designs printed out on 8.5 x 11 paper, some bracelets, and a can of Pringles. You can use any design you want, of course, but Here is the link to these fine Newt Kaiju tattoo designs.

If your nylons have an undies part, cut the legs off and wear the undies on your head for the rest of the tutorial, if desired. Put the legs on your arm like so, and cut the toes off so you can slip your hand through. You can cut some of the top of the sleeve off as well, but don’t cut too much because you can’t put it back on if your sleeves are too short.

Here are my creepy sleeves. Now for the pringles.

Tape your design template to the Pringles can. It doesn’t reach all the way around but eh. The Pringles can gives you a nice stable surface to draw on that is roughly the shape and size of an arm. It’s a little short, so just roll up the rest of the nylon above the workspace and adjust both template and nylon down when you get to working on that part of the sleeve.

Color with the markers! I recommend doing the colored areas first and then doing the black outlines on top of it, to avoid the black ink contaminating the ink pads of the lighter markers. Remember how that always happens to the yellow ones? Eww. Nylons are thin and slide around a bit, so it’s best to use short strokes and dotting to get the ink on.

Take the template off the Pringles tube, flip the paper to the blank side and put it back on again. The paper collects the extra ink, so it’s hard to see any missed spots. Now you can see any bits you may have missed. Fill them in for completion. Also, the paper doesn’t manage to wrap all the way around the Pringles can, so now is the time to free-hand a bit of the design where the template doesn’t reach. For Newt tattoos, that’s the back of the arm.

When you’re all done coloring, put them on!

There’s a rough end to the tattoo right at the wrist, of course. Disguise where the sleeve ends and your skin begins with some pretty bracelets:

There we are, much better!

Now…you’re done! Have some Pringles!

SLAMS THE REBLOG BUTTON

from a tattooist perspective: use the navy sharpie not the black or blue for your lines, they will look like healed black ink.

I couldn’t find a really good, step-by-step tutorial on how to tint/color plastic lenses for cosplay. This is largely for my Steam Powered Giraffe fanmily, because I know that anyone doing a fanbot with goggles may want to make them fancy with some colored tints! Please reblog if you found this tutorial helpful! :3 This particular set of goggles is for my fiance (Harakumo on dA)’s human SPG fan character.

DISCLAIMER:

  • Read and abide by all package instructions and be very careful if you are using an X-acto or other type of blade, as they are very sharp!
  • THIS TUTORIAL IS NOT FOR CONTACT LENSES! Nothing used in and/or resulting from this tutorial should actually touch your eyes!!! D:
  • These are for costume/decoration only! You shouldn’t drive or perform any kind of serious tasks where you rely on your vision for the safety and/or well-being of others and/or property while you wear goggles that you tint using this tutorial. I (kuroikii/plutopiter) take no responsibility for any injury, death, or property damage resulting from vision-impairment caused by this tinting/coloring tutorial!!!!

(I just received word from a friend of mine that “Tamiya” transparent paints work even better for this type of application, and they work in a few minutes. I believe you have to order them online… and I think you need to air-brush it on. If I try it, I will update the tutorial :D)

I want to start cosplaying but I don't know how to start. Any tips?

  1. dont pick a character  you think u look like or one tht has ur jaw shape. pick your child baby precious. pick that character you love to rp. that one you ship with everyone. youll be a lot more successful (and happy) that way.
  2. let yourself hoard A LITTLE (not too much tho) it could come in handy for a cosplay.
  3. practice how you think theyd sound, how you want them to sound. youll feel better about talking to others in cosplay face to face.
  4. DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHER COSPLAYERS DO NOT TRY TO BE OTHER COSPLAYERS BE YOU YOURE THE ONLY YOU AROUND.
  5. if it stops being fun, stop. cosplay does not own you.
  6. if you want to compare yourself to anything, compare it to your old cosplays. look at all that improvement. go you.
  7. tutorials for everything. learn a new way to do something even if you dont think youll need it. learn makeup tricks and wig tips and just anything yo you never know when itll come in handy.
  8. “You are what you love, not who loves you.”- I know it through Fall Out Boy, that might not be the most direct quote though.

STOP TELLING PEOPLE TO LEAVE THEIR TVs ON A DIFFERENT CHANNEL DURING THE INAUGURATION!

That is not how ratings work. Unless you have a Nielsen box, your television doesn’t count in ratings.

Make sure that you DO. NOT. WATCH. OR. READ. ANYTHING. ONLINE. during or after the inauguration!

Reblogging this once more, so please spread the word. As someone who creates and produces television for a living, it’s important for everyone to know.

I’ll say it again. DO NOT LOOK AT ARTICLES OR VIDEOS OF THE INAUGURATION. That’s how you get his “ratings” down. Especially for Trump’s presidency - he is a creature who thrives off of likes/retweets/views. Don’t give that to him.

SHORT STORY/ONE-SHOT/ONE CHAPTER/COMICS 101 CRASH COURSE RAPIDPUNCHES’ STYLE

I’m NOT an expert but I have some working experience I can share. You need experience to become great. Here is my set of instructions, tips, and notes towards making a 12-page comic.
My method is to work backwards. Personally I work “backwards” because the end is the only wholly necessary page or set of panels in the story. Everything in between is open to editing and hacking as the most important moments are emphasized and chosen.
I even plan/draw the end page first. The end is the last page a reader sees- so spend your freshest energies on making it as epic, memorable, poignant, and beautiful as #$%^&.
If you draw the pages from 1 to 12 sequentially you run the risk of fresh to burnt out- an uneven distribution of drawing skill. (treat the first page and the 2-page splash as you would the last).
Roughly… the steps to making your comic is
  1. WRITE
  2. PLAN THUMBNAILS
  3. DRAW
…BEGIN THE WRITING (DO NOT SKIP NO MATTER WHAT) like this, in this order:
  • How does it end?
  • Does the protag succeed or fail?
  • What is the turning point of their story?
  • What the protag do that led them there?
  • Where does it start?
  • Who is this protag?
EXAMPLE:
  • Guy gets mauled by a bear.
  • This is a fail on the guy’s half.
  • The bear must eat something or he’ll starve to death.
  • It’s the guy’s fault the bear can’t find other food. He caused the avalanche that buried all the cabins.
  • The guy is yodeling in an avalanche zone.
  • The guy is some guy.
CREATING “THE BEAT SHEET” Take the above stuff and reorder it to make sense.
  1. This guy yodels.
  2. Echoes roll.
  3. Snow slides down.
  4. Avalanche buries the mountain.
  5. Cabins are engulfed.
  6. This bear has no access to cabin food and garbage.
  7. Bear eats this guy.
Expand. Blow up important beats for emphasis. Keep less important beats brief.
  1. This guy is hiking in the snowy mountains.
  2. He comes across an avalanche warning sign.
  3. There is nobody around but him.
  4. A dumb expression forms over his face and he yodels.
  5. Echoes roll but nothing nearby is moved.
  6. At the top of the mountain the snow drifts twitch.
  7. Guy, satisfied, hikes away from there still yodeling.
  8. Frozen snow cracks.
  9. Snow puffs billow and great slabs of ice crash down the mountain side.
  10. Guy sees this and hightails it to safer ground.
  11. Animals, people, are all panicking and getting pushed over by the rushing snow.
  12. Cabins are destroyed.
  13. The guy takes cover by an outcropping of rocks, fastens himself securely to the rock face, and waits for the avalanche to die down.
  14. Avalanche dies down.
  15. A lone bear shambles over from the other side of the mountain.
  16. The bear goes to where a cabin used to be (only roof tiles are left). Bear sniffs a dish satellite.
  17. Bear forlornly eats a food wrapper.
  18. Bear tries to dig.
  19. Guy comes down from the rocks he as climbing and sees bear.
  20. Bear stops digging and sees him.
  21. Guy runs.
  22. Bear chases him down.
  23. Bear eats the guy.
BEAT SHEET COMPLETED!!!
  • After the beat sheet, write up all the sound effects and speech bubbles and conversation/dialogue you want to be in your comic.
  • Since comics are a visual medium, highest priority is given to the beats. If a story can’t be told with the art without the dialogue– you messed up and it’s time to rethink your life choices.
  • Try to keep all your text chunks as short as a tweet. Professionally you don’t want more than 25 words per speech bubble and no more than 250 words per page.
  • Next is translating the beats to pages…
STRUCTURE OVERVIEW:
[1] point of entry, in media res, hero intro
[2][3] conflict. establish conflict, setting, and mood by the third page. [4][5] rising action/false resolution to conflict/investigation
[6][7] turning point/plot twist/epiphany (this one epic image, to page spread is pivotal, spend a lot of effort into creating this)
[8][9] aftermath/“darkness before dawn”/struggle [10][11] recovery/“rise and conquer”/“fall”
[12] resolution/final end/cliffhanger
[front cover][interior] [interior][back cover]
——————–
My maximum per page is nine panels but I’ve seen pages that have way more. I like to have about 3 to 4 panels per row or less but I’ve seen the “rules” broken before. Advanced comic book artists manipulate time with the number of panels and the size of each panel.
remember, DIAGONALS!!! open up an issue of batman, superman, spider man, deadpool or whatever youre reading theyre everywhere.
———-
…DRAW IN THIS ORDER:
  • Page 12,
  • Page 6 and 7 (this is typically one large image that takes up the space of two pages),
  • Page 1,
  • and then the rest.
ONLY “DEVIATION” ALLOWED:
  • Page 12 and 1*
  • Page 6 and 7,
  • and then the rest.
*Draw the first and last page as a spread in situations where the beginning of the story mirrors the end of the story.
Cover is dead last.
———-
(If at the very end you find out you need more pages and it’s absolutely unavoidable and totally necessary you have to add them in fours. Try to stick to 12 pages for this crash course.)
——————–
FURTHER NOTES:
  • Plan and draw the pages in spreads (the twos) since this is how it will appear in print and when you submit them to an editor for review guess what, the pages with an exception to the first and last will be reviewed as spreads.
  • You at most only need one establishing panel of the setting and environment (scene) per page.
  • Forget “true to life” perspective outside of the establishing panel). Practice diagonal composition of objects and subjects within panels. For dynamism.
  • You don’t have to present the text all in one go (one paragraph or bubble). You can and should break up paragraphs, sentences, and if you need to single out words– to make smaller, more easily managed bubbles to scatter through the panel.
  • Less important moments have smaller panels and or lesser detail. More details (or more word bubbles) slow down time. More drawn detail also creates a concentration of values (it’s darker and sometimes combines together as one shape or mass)
  • Know your light sources. Control the blacks. Control the values.

craft foam scale mail(le) tutorial

so for some reason blackwall has a scale mail(le)* loincloth. idk why, maybe people like to kick him in the balls or something, who knows.

if you’re made out of money and time (time being the same thing as money, so double money or double time, i guess), you can just buy scale making supplies from the ring lord or something, which can be pricey and take a while, or you can try to figure out some other way to do it.

i didn’t want to spend like $40 on scales that would look too real next to the rest of my fake foam armor, and i didn’t want to spend a billion hours weaving a skirt with rings and little metal pieces, so instead I decided to do it on the cheap and instead of like $40 i paid less than $5 for the materials i used since i had most of it on hand for my other armor, anyway. idk i think it looks just fine and is much less heavy than actual metal would have been. here’s a closeup.

i own a sillhouette portrait cutting machine i bought on sale from amazon a couple years ago, so i was curious if it would be any easier to do it this way, since i was making the shape in illustrator anyway…

so here’s what i did:

STEP 1- Vector scale mail(le) shape thing in Illustrator and scale (HAR HAR) it to how big i wanted it to be. the line up the middle is a crease line, which will make more sense later.

image

STEP 2- figure out how many scales i would need by arranging them in rows.

STEP 3- figure out cutting area i had to work with and arrange scales in rows on artboard.

STEP 4a- export to dxf format so silhouette machine can cut it.

STEP 4b- alternately, you can print scales onto paper to use as a template for tracing and cutting by hand.

(more under the cut so this doesn’t get long, including pics of what it looks like finished AND because i’m nice also there’s a jpg template at the end if you want to trace some scales AND the vector file i used to cut these in case you have a machine and want to make your own.)

Winter Soldier: Metal Arm Tutorial

(Photos by Antler Productions)

I recently rebuilt the metal arm for my Winter Soldier cosplay and took process photos every step of the way. So here’s a tutorial showing how I did it! I wanted an arm that was cheap/non-messy to build and lightweight/flexible to wear, so I came up with a method using foam and duct tape.
