for everybody confused as to what the actual fuck is happening, i’ll attempt to give my basic understanding from what i’ve read:
Duksin Andrey Vladimirovich is the guy who, while trying to make more money from an artbook and potential scp movie in russia, spent the russian equivalent of $1,400 to trademark the scp wiki logo and lore in the eurasian customs union. the eurasian customs union– who’s authority does not include the EU, US, or Canada, meaning that no, he did not trademark it worldwide– was unaware of the nature of scp and approved his request, assuming him to be the sole owner. the russian SCP team was then like ‘wait, dude, what the fuck? this is literally illegal. scp is untrademarkable under it’s native creative commons license’ and he was like ‘you people dont understand, this is the best for all of us because i can make more money off of it this way, also fuck you, i will not recognize your creative commons license, and also fuck your staff and your licensing team for trying to keep me from making money off of other people’s stuff’. here’s the official document issued to him by the customs union:
so yes. this is real. is it legal? absolutely not. which is where mann comes in.
mann, a US air force veteran, has been the site master administrator for roughly 5 years. he pays a (if i remember correctly, hefty, like around $100-200) fee every single goddamn month using his real money from his actual irl job to keep the site functioning without a huge amount of ads without getting in trouble with wikidot. this means that technically, creative commons aside, he’s like, the ‘owner of scp’ and the closest thing the site and it’s derivatives have to a sole legal representative.
the above letter is him doing the following things:
1. asserting that he is the closest thing the scp wiki and it’s extended branches has to a master administrator and owner,
2. asserting that vladimirovich has no ownership or even any remote claim to ownership of anything regarding SCP, because he is not the person who wrote SCP-173 (the original content creator; note that in the united states any work you make is your legal property regardless of wether or not you have it under an official license, and that SCP-173′s creator released his original article under scp’s creative commons license very early on), and also not the original administrator who was paying the bills before he couldn’t anymore and had mann take over,
3. saying that under authority of a real US judge’s advocate from the U.S. air force with legal power as a notary (who signed the seal at the bottom), vladimirovich’s claim is illegal, the source material has already been licensed (under the creative commons license), that the official stance of the SCP wiki is that vladimirovich’s trademark claim is null and void,
4. appealing to the eurasian customs union to remove the trademark for the above reasons.
so in conclusion
