Chase Strangio, a staff attorney for the ACLU, is speaking out against Trump’s plan to ban transgender people in the military. (Opinion)

“This is just a tweet. And if the defense department or the Pentagon takes steps to eliminate your rights or to threaten your security, whether in the military, in your employment, in school or elsewhere, we will continue to have your back and fight back with you.”

I know it’s not a comic but I thought that this was important to share with any of my followers, U.S.-based or otherwise, who are scared or concerned about the precedent something like a military ban could set in terms of transgender rights. Stay safe, kids, and know that you’re not alone.

Nearly four decades after he derailed a pioneering transgender program at Johns Hopkins Hospital with his views on “guilt-ridden homosexual men,” psychiatrist Paul McHugh is seeing his institution come full circle with the resumption of gender-reassignment surgeries.
McHugh, the hospital’s chief of psychiatry from 1975 to 2001, still believes that being transgender is largely a psychological problem, not a biological phenomenon. And with the title of university distinguished service professor at Johns Hopkins Medicine, he continues to wield enormous influence in certain circles and is quoted frequently on gender issues in conservative media.
“I’m not against transgender people,” he said recently, stressing that he is “anxious they get the help they need.” But such help should be psychiatric rather than surgical, he maintains.
Hopkins, however, is moving beyond McHugh. This summer, it will formally open a transgender health service and will resume, after a 38-year hiatus, an accompanying surgical program.

He still wields tremendous power and sway with key medical decision-makers, and it is surprising it took until now to disavow his views. But progress is progress, better late than never.

The actuality of depression that no one seems able to grasp is you have to fight for your own life. You don’t have doctors forcing standard treatments or have an entire support team praying for you. You’re solely responsible for providing the encouragement and care necessary to keep you alive. The times I’ve been at my sickest I had to fight with every last drop of hope I had to get myself out of the grave my mind was digging for me. The disease is what kills you. It corrupts your mind forcing your every thought to scare you enough that suicide seems like your only way out. I wish people could understand that… not only to show the respect those who lost their battle with depression deserve and not view it as an act of selfishness, but also to realize how fucking strong a person living with depression has to be to not slip into that same scenario. Personally, I think that there’s always going to be something better than not being here at all… not to mention the fear of where I’ll end up, there’s far too much unknown, which terrifies me, which is good… Because I know what it feels like to be in the position people are in before they end it all. It’s a feeling I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy and I wouldn’t even want to attempt to explain it to you. Because it’s, well, depressing. About as depressing as it can get really

It should not make someone uncomfortable to publicize facts on mental illness.  Like arms and legs, the mind is a part of the body.
