What is Tumblr for if not complaining about meaningless things, yes? My favorite foundation (Nyx skin veil) got discontinued, disrespectful, so I'm on the hunt for a new one and currently exasperated because everywhere I'm looking for foundation for pale girls is recommending something I already know is two shades too dark for me in the lightest shade. I already know I'm extremely white, thank you, that's why finding this foundation in the first place was such a win, it's hard enough finding the right shade even without considering I've got dry skin that's also pretty acne-prone, and I wanted something light and moisturizing. Boo.

And the thing is, like, yeah, I could go back to wearing regular coverage foundation all the time, but a) this was actually doing good things for my skin, and b) I pick at my face a lot less when I wear makeup. Also c) it being very light coverage meant I got used to seeing my own bare face again on days I don't feel like wearing makeup, which has increased and I think that's all good for me. So I'm annoyed.

Tumblr wouldn’t let me add in Replies so here we go

I don’t wear makeup myself, but there’s a tinted moisturizer, BB cream from Tarte that is light, good coverage that I’ve enjoyed. I think I also had a BB cream from NYC. My go to foundation is L’Oréal with Maybeline touch up

its been said before but media that emphasizes optimism and a kind of childlike wonder in the face of life’s cruelty is unmistakably more mature than media that emphasizes that cruelty, even though it’s not as realistic.

whats that one quote by CS Lewis.. “someday you will be old enough to start reading fairytales again.”

Media that emphasizes cruelty is written by those who dream of the battlefield.

Media that emphasizes optimism is written by those who have survived the battlefield.

Damn right. People who lived gentle lives love the scenes in war movies where people die tragically and heroically. People who lived like life was war love the scenes of the survivors helping each other off the battlefield.

For those of us who survive violence, every small mercy and every moment of gentleness that we encounter carries tremendous weight. Compassion stands in elevated high contrast against a backdrop of cruelty.

We all live in a violent world, whether or not we individually experience violence. In the context of our violent world, every act of compassion is important.

And not just in media.

To whoever reads this post: Your acts of compassion matter and so do you.

Is this a prank? What….

Edit: holy heck it’s real…

They might be able to help us…

The stage that they're at is animal testing but it sounds like it's been successful in mouse and primate models.

My understanding: The way autoimmune diseases usually seem to work* is the immune system is "flagging" the wrong thing as harmful/not needed and destroying it. The typical treatments for autoimmune diseases are just tamping the entire immune system down so it can't destroy anything, which leaves a person vulnerable to infection.

The newer method is basically "tricking" the body using a method that... the human body already came up with. Cells flagging the wrong thing apparently happens all the time, so there are multiple defenses against immune disease, and one of them is in the liver. So scientists figured out a way to tell the body "hey, you flagged this wrong" and sent it to the liver and the liver/body recognized this signal.

There is still a lot of work to be done and it sounds like this isn't foolproof (ie: what if the liver is whats broken? unsure, and what if the immune system flags things wrong again?) but this is literally so amazing. i was tearing up reading it, and i hope that everything goes well in clinical trials.

*theres like a lot medical science doesnt know about the immune system

Thank you for this explanation/synthesis of the article! It's important for us to understand that they're still in early development and testing of these methods, but also that they've seen it work in mice and primates (rather than just petri dishes of human cells). I hope this goes well.

Hi! I'm a microbiologist and I've done work in academia, pharma, and clinical trials.

So the most exciting thing about this article is the last paragraph tbh (working on getting the actual paper, it's not up on sci-hub yet).

The company mentioned, Anokion, has four registered clinical trials for both Celiac and MS patients. The trial for Celiac just submitted data from their phase 1 trial (meaning there's good data it is safe) and are recruiting for a Phase 1/2 trial (meaning they are now testing efficacy). After that, the big hurdle is phase 3, which looks at whether or not it is better than a current treatment. The projected completion date is spring 2025. They are also preparing for a Phase 2 trial but are not yet recruiting.

The phase 1 MS trial is currently active, estimated completion in summer 2024.

I checked the company website and it looks like they are in the process of submitting an investigational new drug (IND) application for Type 1 diabetes. This is the first step to starting clinical safety and efficacy trials.

Now clinical trials can get delayed for a variety of reasons, but this is a really good sign! It's way further along than I initially thought when seeing the news. If the treatment does well, we could see new drugs on the market for Celiacs as early at 2030ish and MS as early as 2035.

I literally just burst into tears and woke up my partners.

Holy shit. The idea of not having celiac disease anymore is so completely overwhelming.

Update: I have registered for the trial and if you also have celiac and want to register the link is here.

I love learning about other culture's Houseguest Protocols but I hate hate hate when they don't match up cause like

I (PNW Canadian, raised with etiquette from my old British great-grandparents) sleeping over: Can I help with dinner. Can I do the dishes. PLEASE let me do something useful. Im sorry I'm here. I can sleep on the floor it's fine. You don't need to cook for me I can go outside and drink pond water. Do you hate me

My friend (Indian, raised by entire extended family in Dubai) hosting me: Why won't you let me feed you. Do you need more coffee. Am I doing something wrong. Do you have enough blankets? I will buy you warmer clothes. Here, you can sleep in my room, I'll take the couch. Why are you crying? Oh God am I a bad host

Also,

Me (PNW, raised European etiquettes) making direct eye contact with a family member I have wronged: They will know by my forthright and direct body language that I am owning my mistake and not trying to lie or minimize my actions. By looking them in the eyes they can know that they have my full attention and I am fully dedicated to making things right

Family member (Cree, raised with Cree etiquettes) seeing me stare them down like I'm daring them to try shit: I can tell by their unwavering death-stare that they are not the least bit ashamed of themselves. Obviously they are lying to my face and also think I am an idiot. This is an act of severe disrespect

Me, oblivious: I'm doing so good at Apology

The reason I like reading a book in one day is because I love watching people look at the size of the book in pure horror and then back at me like I just became terrifying in their eyes

I had a guy in highschool look at me one day and go, “why do you have a different book every other day? Why not just read one??” I just kind of paused and said, “they’re different because I read them and get a new one?” And he made this face

these are the moments i live for

THE SECURITY GUARD AT MY JOB IS ACTUALLY SCARED OF ME BECAUSE I HAVE A DIFFERENT BOOK WITH ME EVERYDAY. HE SAYS ITS NOT NATURAL. HAHAHA GOOD

the second day after my ship’s change of command ceremony, i see the new cap come around the corner so i call attention on deck and everyone freezes and clears the way.

he walks past me and i’m about to relax but then he, stops, backs up and looks me up and down. i’m sweating bullets because we knew nothing about what kind of a cap was he going to be like was my shirt untucked or something oh god what did i do now???

and he just goes “where’s your book?”

and i blink because i am a third class petty officer but a captain is still kind of terrifying and he’s new and I DON’T KNOW WHAT BOOK HE IS TALKING ABOUT is he a stickler do i need to have a copy of the bluejacket’s manual on me at all times or what?

so i screw up my courage and ask him, “my book, sir?”

and he checks my name patch again and says, “you’re petty officer xxxx, you always have a book. where is your book? are you okay?”

like

cap has been onboard for less than 24 hours HOW DOES HE KNOW THIS?

(i mean, he’s not wrong, i got a lot of shit from other senior personnel about the pocket on my uniform being stretched out because it always had a book in it.)

but i have an answer and he’s the new cap, so i give it: “i finished my last one and haven’t had a chance to get to my bunk and grab a new one.”

and his eyes bug out

shit

i broke the new captain goddammit LT is gonna kill me

and he goes “BUT YOU JUST STARTED THAT ONE YESTERDAY!”

and i’m just staring back now like HOW DOES HE KNOW THIS OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK OUR NEW CAP IS PSYCHIC OR SOME SHIT

and because my brain has broken under the stress of this encounter i ask him

and he’s like “i saw you on the mess decks on my tour with [old cap] and you were on like page ten that book is like 400 pages how did you read it in one day?”

and i’m like SHIT he’s gonna be pissed because he thinks i was slacking because i read a bigass book in one day fuck fuck fuck fuck FUCK

like this was not the first time i’d gotten in trouble for reading when i was on watch or whatever but i had maintenance watches i’m literally waiting for something to break and my chief didn’t mind

BUT THIS IS THE CAP IF HE MINDS CHIEF’S OPINION ISN’T WORTH A FISH FART IN THE OCEAN

and so i stammer, “i read a lot? so… i… i read fast?”

and he just stares and i don’t know what the expression on his face means

before i can process this though and come up with a new response, he’s grabbing my shoulder and turning me and pushing me ahead of him where little baby petty officers do not walk because CAPTAIN GOES FIRST

and i’m like “welp this is how i end up in the brig i get to be the new cap’s first captain’s mast it was nice knowing everyone”

idk that or he’s gonna throw me over the side honestly who knows my whole world was upside down at this point

and then he starts talking

he’s like “go get a new book what are you reading next did you like your last book tell your chief i sent you if he asks why you were gone what is your favorite genre and author have you ever read” and basically escorts me to my berthing grilling me about books and everywhere we go people are staring and oh god i’m going to die i am just going to die of shame and horror and this is it this is what takes me out does this count as dying for my country i don’t even know

and that’s how we learned that our new cap was married to a librarian and an avid reader and was not going to have an illiterate crew, dammit.

i never caught shit for having a book in my back pocket or reading on watch again. :D

this is so cute i love you so much im so jealous

This is the best story I have ever read, god bless

IT GOT BETTER

“The Rape of Nanking should be remembered not only for the number of people slaughtered but for the cruel manner in which many met their deaths. Chinese men were used for bayonet practice and in decapitation contests. An estimated 20,000-80,000 Chinese women were raped. Many soldiers went beyond rape to disembowel women, slice off their breasts, nail them alive to walls. Fathers were forced to rape their daughters, and sons their mothers, as other family members watched. Not only did live burials, castration, the carving of organs, and the roasting of people become routine, but more diabolical tortures were practiced, such as hanging people by their tongues on iron hooks or burying people to their waists and watching them get torn apart by German shepherds. So sickening was the spectacle that even the Nazis in the city were horrified, one proclaiming the massacre to be the work of bestial machinery.”

The rape of Nanking by Iris Chang.

(found Via here. Trigger warning for photos of disembodied heads.)

We should never ever let the Japanese forget Nanking, just like nobody let’s America forget Hiroshima.

One of the poli science teachers at my college was the only one out of 35 members of his family to survive it. He gave a speech on its anniversery that chilled you to the core and made your bones ache to imagine the barbaric things he witnessed and what he survived.

What the fuuuck that is… just awful and unimaginable wtf

So yea, the Japanese were to China and southeast Asia as the Nazis were to Jews, Gypsies, etc.

This is one of the most grievous examples, but others include testing distribution of plague fleas on Chinese villages, sharing medical experiment notes with death camp doctors, and other general shenanigans.

my brother had a brilliant idea that i wanted to share with other people who have four-legged family members: he trained our two cats to go directly to the door when they hear the fire alarm.

obviously at first the fire alarm sent them scrambling for cover, but he started slowly by giving them treats whenever it went off, when someone burned food or forgot to open the fireplace flu. he then progressed to calling them to the door to offer treats immediately after the alarm went off. and it actually wasn't too long before the cats voluntarily started going to the door upon hearing the alarm.

i think this was genius because in the event of a real emergency we know exactly where the cats will be and we will not have to waste precious time trying to find them to rescue them. i think this method would work equally well with dogs and probably other free-roaming pets such as rabbits, ferrets, etc. and i certainly encourage others to give it a shot!

I trained Neelix to alert me to Sounds. So in the even of A Sound he'd find me to let me know about it. Oven timers, knocking at the door, weird creature stuck in the yard, etc. This has the added effect of being able to scoop him up and bring him to safety in the event said sound is a fire alarm or a tornado siren.

The downside is, when I had a baby, every time it cried he'd barrel into the room to let me know. Even if I was already in the room. And if I couldn't make The Sound stop (because an infant works differently than an oven timer), he'd start biting me urgently. 😅

Confused, but doing his best:

Oh, context is that I'm deaf not that I wanted to create a beast that'd harass me over sounds.

It’s thanksgiving season in the US which means that, like every year, there’s a flood of articles encouraging you to fight and/or break ties with your family over political discussions. Bearing that in mind, I’d like to remind you that trying to isolate you from your existing support networks is one of the primary warning signs of a cult.

If someone who DOES NOT KNOW YOU OR YOUR FAMILY is telling you DEFINITIVELY that you should reject loved ones wholesale because they have a certain political opinion or religious belief, run in the opposite direction. They do not care about you; they care about adding more voices to their side of a screaming match. Loneliness is a sickness so many Americans suffer from, and it’s terrible how these voices of anger and isolation try to blind people to the importance of hope, understanding, tolerance, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Relationships are HARD. People aren’t perfect. Things don’t always go right. But relationships can heal, if we allow them the chance. Please don’t rip your hard relationships out by the roots. Disagreement does NOT equal hate. And even when the other person is hardened against you and you have to move on, it’s okay to leave the door open a crack. You never know when they may change and heal and come knocking.

Do you think one day like a hundred years from now, Goncharov will become another unsolved mystery/conspiracy. Like the pyramids being built by aliens n stuff. "Nobody can find this mysterious movie that was so popular back in the 2020s. Why was it removed from existence? Was it too controversial? Did it ever exist at all? Today we look at the top 10 theories of what happened to this apparent masterpiece of old school cinema"

I wonder what conspiracies we have now that could actually just be... people in the past coming together and fucking w other people for fun. Like the Loch ness monster probably.

Anyway happy anniversary to the best mafia movie that ever existed. Shame you'll never see it future historians, maybe you'll find it eventually. The future reboot doesn't count you have to find the 1973 one.
