Elliot Aronson did a study in the 80s or 90s where he and other sociologists found that reports of rape declined for a long period of time and they determined that it was tied to the national release of the CBS film Cry Rape, a film that depicted female survivors of sexual assault as unreliable and the men they accuse as sympathetic.

Aronson and others realized that the frequency of sexual assault and rape didn’t actually change. What happened was that women were even more afraid to come forward and report the crime because that film had perpetuated stereotypes that women “cry rape,” that they are hysterical, and that they are liars. The decline in reports went on for months, maybe longer.

The media has a deafening impact on society and it’s something that goes largely ignored. A film that depicts women as untrustworthy led to countless rapists never seeing a day of punishment.

Makes you wonder what the effect is of the President of the United States tweeting, doing interviews, and holding rallies with the sole purpose of ridiculing and attacking survivors of sexual assault and rape.

an incredibly important message, rape is rape. no one is ever asking for it. a woman has the right to dress how ever they want - it is society that identifies risque dressing as ‘asking for it’, and in my opinion, that way of thinking needs to be diminished.
