Future AU: It’s the twenty year reunion. Will Lucas Friar let the memory of his wife and the mother of his fourteen year old daughter prevent him from reconnecting with his first love, Riley Matthews.
Future AU: The reunion over, Lucas and Lily return to Texas and Riley returns to her job overseas. Will the difficulties of distance and their own lives cause problems for their reemerging relationship
I’m really sorry about the long wait. I’ve been busy and my mind has been elsewhere. But, I hope this preview makes up for it. Thank you for being patient. In the next few days or week, I should have the rest of it done.
My eyes flutter open and the first thing I notice is that I’m no longer in my grandparents’ kitchen. Instead, I’m lying on the couch in the living room. I blink a few times, and that is when I see a pair of concern eyes looking at me—more specifically bright green eyes staring right at me. I see the worry that is etched in those eyes as they study me. It makes me feel at ease and on edge at the same time, and all I can think is how is that even possible.
The green eyes never look away from me as I slowly move into a sitting position so that my feet are on the ground. I know I shouldn’t do what I’m thinking. I know it might not be the Riley thing to do, but that’s what my trip was about right?
The green-eyed man parts his lips, “Riley, are you okay?” His voice is sweet and delicate, and I can feel my insides react. The fluttering in my stomach, the heat in my cheeks, the racing in my chest. I feel like a teenager back in high school—the way I’ve felt from the moment I remember meeting him.
It’s interesting how sorrow can bring strangers together. Take the Matthews and Friar family. For the longest time their only tie was the union between Rachel McGuire and Eric Matthews. Only father time would’ve known that this tie would soon become a knit a few short years later. The Matthew’s with a tragic car accident and the Friar’s an untimely death to a widowed mother. Both situations leaving beautiful children to the care of that small knot of a couple, Rachel and Eric. They’d deliberated for month’s as to where they’d live. New York Texas. For awhile they thought of uprooting everyone and moving to an new state to start fresh, but they knew that probably wouldn’t be good for anyone. They continued to reach for an answer that seemed to be avoiding them at all they quiz grand as the were I know theyll then one hot Texas Summer the oldest of the Friar clan, Lucas, stepped up.
“Levi and I’ve been talking and we think New York is the best bet.”
“But, what about you.” Said Rachel. “Your whole life is here.”
“Not anymore. At least Riley and Auggie have a home and a bakery to hold onto. All Levi and I have is each other and ya’ll, so again New York is our best bet.”
That August two families jammed themselves into a three bedroom apartment and though chaos did ensue, by December they were settled into a new norm.
“Riles!” Said Rachel with a smile as wide as the sky. It was Christmas Eve and the festivities she’d been planning all month for were about to come to a head. She plopped down next to the cute brunette in her cozy bay window and wrapped both arms around her. “Merry Christmas Eve my love!”
“Happy Christmas Eve, Aunt Rachel!”
They sank into the hug for a moment then separated.
“Can you go to the corner store and pick up Levi’s prescription? Mr. Camerieri called and said it’s ready thank goodness! I was afraid it was too late!”
“Of course!” Said Riley as she hopped up and saluted her stunning Aunt. Suddenly a cloud of smoke filled the room causing a knowing grin crept across her face. She squinted her eyes as the smoke settled and sure enough their the three troublemakers were; Eric, Levi and Auggie and boy were their clothes a mess!
Rachel’s face twisted. “What happened-”
“No time woman!” Said Eric, locking his eyes with Riley’s. “We need tinfoil! Stat!” She nodded then with a snap of his finger a flash of light blinded both her and Rachel and just like that the three were gone. In there place and twenty dollar bill and a thank you note. Riley giggled as she picked it up.
“Those silly boys.” Chuckled Rachel. “Well, I guess you have your orders!”
“I guess I do!”
She quickly put on her coat and hat and was in the process of putting her gloves on when the four most dreaded words slipped from her aunts lips. “Wait for Lucas to come with you!”
Her smile dropped as her Rachel zipped across her room and down the hall. “Lucas!”
Riley rolled her eyes as she followed. The two didn’t much like each other thanks to the punch incident of 2010, the cake fiasco of 2011 and the crown and glory cow-pie tragedy of 2012. Nevertheless they stayed fake polite. Unfortunately, in their new situation they were finding it quit difficult to keep that same energy in the same space.
“Lucas?!” Said Rachel as she popped her head into his dark room. She flipped on the light and you’d thought the boy was a vampire the way he blocked his eyes and hissed. “Oh stop and go to the corner store with Riley to get your brother’s prescription please and thank you!”
He grunted as he sat up from his propped up futon. “Now?”
“Yes, now!”
From behind Rachel he could see Riley glaring at him in the most cordial way. He rolled his eyes, popped on his hood then slipped out through the fire escape, “Desperado” blaring in his ears.
Riley huffed as she wiggled passed her aunt and followed the grumpy cowboy through the window. Rachel smiled at the sight then turned on her heals to finish her preparations for dinner.
Once in the store they went their separate ways. He, to the candy aisle and she, to the pharmacy.
“Well, hello there, doll face!” Said old pharmacist Mr. Camerieri.
“Well, hello there, Mr. Camerieri! How are you today?”
“Doin’ great! Doin’ great!” Replied Mr. Camerieri with a few shoulder shimmies. “And you?”
Riley smiled as she shimmied her shoulders as well. “Doin’ great! Doin’ great!”
He laughed with great delight as he gave her the little white bag. “Will that be all for you my dear?”
“Yes- NO! I’ll be getting some tinfoil and whatever candy Lucas is getting.” She handed him the money and then glanced over at Lucas who was still staring at the same rack of Gummy bears he’d been looking at since he’d gotten to that aisle. She let out a heavy sigh and crossed her arms as Mr. Camerieri continued to count the money.
“You two in love yet?” Said Mr. Camerieri as he peaked at the blushing girl over his glasses.
She let out a silent gasp. “Me and Lucas?! No way!”
Mr. Camerieri chuckled. “Why not he’s handsome and has a real good heart! Like you!”
“Handsome, he maybe, but speaks, he does not. At least not to me.”
“YET! He doesn’t speak to you yet, but I gotta feelin’ he’ll come around. He did with me.”
“And what if I don’t like what he has to say?”
“And what if you do?” Said Mr. Camerieri as he handed Riley the money.
She narrowed her eyes and held up her hand. “Keep the change.” Then walked away before he could say another word.
“I’m never wrong about these things!” Said Mr Camerieri, waving the money in the air.
The blush deepened on her cheeks as she quickly ducked down the nearest aisle. “Sure! Merry Christmas Mr. Camerieri!”
“Merry Christmas!” she heard him call back. She shook her head doing her best to shake the embarrassment from her face. Lucas Friar? Pshhhhhhh. She refocused herself and marched down the aisle, her eyes sharply searching for the infamous tinfoil. Four aisles later she found hidden behind some Tupperware.
“Ha-HA!” Said Riley as she held it high above her head. She’d finished her quest. She skipped toward the candy aisle that Lucas was no longer at and rolled her eyes. “Typical.”
She shuffled out the door and there he was leaning against the building with one foot propped up, his music still blasting and a sucker coolly sticking out of his mouth. She tapped his shoulder and held up the items she’d collected. He shrugged his shoulders and walked off.
“Typical.”
When they returned the Christmas Eve activities were in full swing. The boys had already torn through their boxes and were dancing in their new pair of matching Pajama’s. Rachel and Eric pulled the two bumbling preteens in and shoved their gifts in their faces.
“Quickly!” Said Rachel. “Open your gifts so I can take pictures then go change so we can get out the Hot Chocolate movie!”
They did as they were told and 20 minutes later they were all settled around the Television to watch Levi’s choice of movie; Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. All except Lucas, who looked like he was holding his breath. In fact, he’d been that way ever since he found out what movie they were watching. In any other case with any other person Riley would’ve been concerned, instead she ignored her instinct to ask and snuggled closer to Auggie and Levi. Things were fine until they reached the scene of Harry’s first Christmas at Hogwarts.
“MAMA!” Said Levi with a goofy grin.
Everyone looked at him with shocked expressions.
“What did you say Levi?” Asked Rachel. Before Levi could answer Lucas bolted for his and the boy’s room.
“MAMA!” Repeated Levi. “This is her favorite scene in the whole movie! It’s why I wanted to watch it cause that’s what me Lukey and Mama use to do on Christmas Eve! Then in the mornin’ mama would shout, ‘Happy Christmas, Harry!’ and then we’d shout back, ‘Happy Christmas, Ron!’” The joy in his face faded a bit as he turned to his Aunt Rachel. “Will you do that for us too?”
She nodded, doing her best to hold back the tears that were brimming her eyes and softly replied, “Of course, baby. Of course.”
He beamed. “YAY! HAPPY CHRISTMAS! HAPPY CHRISTMAS!”
Riley bit her lip as her gaze shifted from the bouncing boys to their bedroom door. She watched it for the rest of the night and not one sound escaped from it. When it was time for bed she rushed her goodnights and scurried to her own room. She ducked under her covers and clutched the necklace around her neck, her eyes squeezed shut. “Please, bless Lucas with strength and help him know he’s not alone.”
She whispered this over and over again until she’d drifted off to sleep. With a jolt she awoke. She glanced over to the clock and saw it was midnight. She clutched her necklace one last time then unfastened it. She held it tight in her hand as she crept out into the hallway. When she reached the boy’s room she quietly opened the door and peaked in. Even though it was dark, the lights from the railing illuminated the crowed space with a soft glow, revealing two sleeping boys on a cute bunk-bed in the corner and a wide awake Lucas on the now flattened futon next to them, his steely glare fixed on her.
“Lucas.” Whisper-shouted Riley. “You awake?” She waited for a reply, but nothing. “Right. Well, I’m gonna take that as a yes and come in.”
He rolled his eyes and watched as she quickly tiptoed toward him. When she reached his bed he sat up and crossed his arms, his glare still in tacked. Like always Riley smiled back, but it seemed sincere this time which caught him off guard. Still, he held his front. “What do you want, Matthews?”
She held out her hand. His brows farrowed as his head cocked to the side. He examined it for a moment then raised his eyes to meet hers. “I’m not kissing that.”
She huffed. “Hold out your hand, please.”
Again he just stared up at her. She clinched her fist and sat down next to him.
“Look I know you and I don’t particularly like one another and I promise I’ll go back to pretending like you don’t exist after tonight. I just really fell like I needed to give you this, so please hold out your hand.”
He examined her once more then let out a heavy sigh as he held out his hand. She sighed as well then ever so slowly dropped a thin silver necklace with a ring attached to it into his hand. His eyes widened then shot to her.
“It’s called a fede ring.” Said Riley. “It belonged to my dad. He gave it to me the day before he-” Her voice trailed off. “Anyway, it’s brought me a lot of strength this past year and I figured it could do the same for you.” Not wanting him to see the tears that were streaming down her face she b-lined it for the door.
“Hey.” Whispered Lucas.
She spun around, eyes almost popping out of her head. He’d never acknowledged her before and the feeling that swirled in her heart almost knocked her over.
He glanced at the necklace then back to her. “Tha- I mean- You didn’t- I mean-”
“Happy Christmas, Harry.” Said Riley, a tiny grin dancing at the corner of her mouth.
He let out what sounded like a laugh and with tears now streaming down his face replied, “Happy Christmas, Ron.”
Neither of them could stop smiling after she left the room. It’s strange how sorrow can bring two strangers together.

Freshman year is nearing it’s end and Riley and Lucas’ relationship is beginning to warm up, although recently Lucas has felt like he’s hardly spent anytime with his girlfriend.
It’s a Thursday afternoon and the final bell sounds at school. As Riley approaches her locker she notices her boyfriend Lucas waiting with his backpack already slung over his shoulder.
“Hey,” Riley wears a smile as she meets him in the hall.
“Hey back.” Lucas grins too as he waits for Riley to collect her things.
“Shouldn’t you be with Zay right now?” Riley asks after planting a sheepish kiss on Lucas’ cheek.
“I thought we could walk to the bakery together?” Lucas suggests with a cute smile.
“I can’t.” Riley frowns. “I have to take Auggie to soccer practice today.”
“Oh, yeah.” Lucas says with his bottom lip slightly pouted, “It’s Thursday, I forgot.”

Riley lounged across her sofa with her legs in the air, watching ‘Love Actually’ while painting her nails and waiting for her toes to dry. It was a tradition she and her mother had on Valentine’s Day. The two of them would always use the day as an excuse to pamper themselves since they had no one else to spend the day with.
Even when her mom was pretty serious with a guy she would always opt to spending the day with her daughter which Riley obviously loved. Between the endless amounts of chocolate, sappy love movies and manicured hands and feet it easily became one of her favorite holidays of the year. Giving Christmas a run for its money. And even though Valentine’s Day would never be the same for her again without her mother she still wanted to keep the tradition alive so this year she invited Erica and Smackle to join her.

Riley and Lucas sit knee deep in silence. It’s like the moment they were left alone together everything shut down. Even though the lively sounds of the city could be heard below them and the distant chatter of their old friends filled in the background noise it mostly just came in as static. It was hard to concentrate on something as simple as starting a conversation when their hearts were both beating so hard against their chest.

10 years later…
It had been ten years since Rhiannon and Jedediah remarried. A union that would sadly only get until Christmas that year but their love would last long after both of them passed. It was only a few short weeks later that the Matthews returned to New York with a few hearts broken in the process.
Although her inevitable return to the city happened it wasn’t the last time Riley would twirl her way through Hillford Creek. A few events over the years would draw the brunette back into town, mostly happy reasons but some brought on by sad circumstances. Despite the reason, good or bad, Riley found it harder each and every time it came for her to leave.
Now, nearly four years since her last visit Riley sits on on a near empty bus. Her gaze fixated out the window, a small smile resting on her face as she admires the scenic drive into town. Her nostalgia building with every mile behind her.
Riley trips on the last step off the bus in her true klutzy fashion. Quickly she steadies herself and has a quiet laugh at the same sorry excuse of a bus stop she first arrived at all those years ago. The brunette inhales deeply, with a smile on her face she walks towards the sign that reads;

Throughout the week, Riley’s errands regarding the wedding continued and the more time she spent out, the more locals would stop her and press for details about the upcoming nuptials. Of course something like this is big news for the tiny town and it seemed that everyone wanted to be apart of it.
What was originally planned to be an intimate family thing in Jed’s own backyard turned into a Hillford Creek Spectacular held right in town square. Riley worried the towns involvement would take away from the magic of the reunion, especially since hardly any of them actually knew Jed on a personal level. Sure, maybe a few locals had surface level conversations if he ever ventured into town for groceries or to run errands but none of them - except for Cassidy - had made a real effort to befriend Jedediah.
Despite Riley’s concerns, both Jed and Rhiannon insisted that the only thing that mattered to them was that it happens and not how it happens.
It’s Topanga whom suggested they marry under the tree in which Rhiannon asked Jed to ‘come with her’, an idea Riley was more than happy to support.
Riley and Lucas suck when it comes to matters of the heart. See what happens when these two romantics fight their way through, misunderstandings, heartaches and learn that sometimes the person who’s seen you through it all is that good thing you’d been searching for all along!

Izzy quickly rolled up her sleeves. She’d been in this situation many of times in the hospital, but the same couldn’t be said about bakeries. She assessed her tools and huffed. “How much longer till the ambulance gets here?!”
“20, 30 minutes tops!” Farkle replied.
“Perfect.” She sighed. Maya groaned from her makeshift bed on the floor. Izzy took in a deep breath then looked back to the small band of panicked stricken faces and did her best not to smile. “Alright. Here’s what’s going to happen.” She turned to Zay. “You’re our director/camera guy remember? Go get set up.”
“RIGHT!” He shouted as he dashed toward his bag. “I’M ON IT!”
“Riley.” She said turning to the blundering brunette. “I need you to help Maya with her breathing techniques.”
“IZZY!” Josh shouted. “THEY’RE GETTING CLOSER!”
“Lucas.” She continued, her speech speeding up as she did. “I need you to act as Maya’s chair and hold her up, but before you do, please find me more towels!”
“ON IT!” He shouted, zooming toward the back closet.
“Farkle, my heart, as always you are my-”
“Right hand man.” He finished as he gently kissed her cheek. “I’ll go look out for the ambulance.”
She smirked as he raced out the front door. He really was the love of her life.
“Hey Iz.” Noah asked, bringing her back. “What would you have me- us do?”
“Are you really asking me about this?”
“Yes.”
She took in a deep breath. “Fine.” She paused for a moment then step forward, her voice low enough for only them to hear. “I’m sorry, but your presence is not relevant here.” She tilted her head toward Noah and through clinched teeth said, “Would you please escort Hannah to her apartment quickly and quietly before either of your significant other’s realize you have left.“
“Oh Izzy, darlin’ I don’t need a-”
Noah reached for her hand causing her words to drop. “You sure this is all we can do?” He asked, his voice strained.
“Positive.”
“IZZY!” Riley called. “JOSH LOOKED UNDER THE BLANKET!”
“Damn it!” She mumbled under her breath as she raced over. “I told him not to do that!” She flashed a small light in his eyes. “You alright, Matthews?”
His face had drained of all color as he stood. “Yeah, perfect. I just need to get some-” His eyes rolled back.
“LUCAS!” She shouted, trying to hold Josh as he fell.
He raced in from the back and caught the fainting dad-to-be just in the nick of time. Riley and Maya sighed with great relief when another contraction hit causing Maya to fill the small bakery with her bloodcurdling scream.
“Just keep breathing, Maya!” Izzy said as she threw the blanket over her knees. Lucas, Farkle and Zay grimaced at the sight. The head was crowning!
“WAKE UP!” Lucas snapped as he smacked Josh’s face. “YOUR KID’S COMING!”
He sat up and with the Lucas’ help, made it back to his wife’s side. Right then two EMT’s came through the door, Farkle close behind. Izzy frantically explained that she was the woman’s doctor and began to order them to do a bunch of medical stuff that only they seemed to understand. One stayed with her while the other ran out to grab more supplies.
Izzy turned back to the extremely exhausted blonde and with a calm voice, said, “I need you to give me one BIG push.”
“I can’t.” She cried as Riley wiped off her brow. “It hurts too much!”
“I understand, but I need you to work with me! Just one!”
She shrieked then shook her head.
Josh leaned in close to her ear and whispered, “Yes, you can! Yes, you can! Now, come on, honey! He’s almost here! Just one more big one and he’s here!”
She took in a deep breath, bore down, PUSHED AND …
Lucas Friar moved back to Texas at 17, now he’s running for Mayor of Rosewood Springs so best friend Zay and little sister Gigi decide he needs a little help from a political consultant. Riley Matthews found her calling, she found a fiancé, but she never expected to find herself here, of all places.

Also thank you to everyone who sent in dreamcasts/fancasts for the characters. It has been fascinating to see who you all picture as not just Riley, Lucas, Gigi, and Zay, but also Deacon, Dixie, and Gloria May, etc. I appreciate your support, and passion for this story in more ways than you will ever know, or I could ever put into words. Thank you for still be interested in Thunder Chasing The Wind, and anything else I’ve written. You guys are amazing and really turn a difficult day good. xoxoxo
Lucas’ neck was stiff as he woke up, looking over to see Riley asleep on the hospital bed, the monitors keeping an eye on the twins growing inside of her. In the moment she looked peaceful, and his heart ached, wanting to protect her from everything awful that could ever happen to her and their children.
She was the kindest person he knew, she radiated with positivity even in the darkest moments. How could anyone want to hurt her?
He wasn’t worthy of her, he’d been a jerk to women for years—was this karma? He’d had a wall up, but of course she could come in and start to pull it down as if it was made of straw and sticks, not bricks.
Amazing so glad for the update!! I missed this story but worth the wait! Can't wait to see what happens when Topanga meets Dixie 😊and what will happen with Gigi and her love life, I almost feel like she went with the safe choice because of her moms comment. My Zigi heart is broken 💔

Everything was going as planned. Mr. And Mrs. Matthews, as well as Auggie, reluctantly agreed to be out of the house when Riley’s prom date arrived to pick her up but only with the promise that she take a million pictures of them, and her friends, together once they got there. Of course that didn’t stop either of them from snapping away as she got ready for the big dance.
Topanga got candid shots of her getting dressed and Cory made her pose for pictures in her pj’s but with her hair all done up and a full face of make up on. It was exactly how she imagined it would be when she was younger. The major difference being back then she always envisioned her girls getting ready with her too. She never thought she’d be sitting in her room alone, sad music playing in the background as she blended out her eyeshadow.

It takes her a minute to process what just happened. To move at all. Her face feels frozen as she stares at the space he was just occupying. Slowly she tears her gaze away and looks at the mess he left scattered across her bed. She didn’t just imagine that whole thing. He really showed up and asked her to leave with him. He really kissed her.
Riley swallows the lump in her throat as she begins to pick up his mess, a million different questions running through her mind. What was he hiding from her? Why the sudden desire to abruptly leave everything you know behind? What about trying to start over? What about… what about Lucas.
Her heart feels heavy as she thinks about what this will do to him. He’s lost his brother so many times and even though he’d never admit it, she knows that Jackson sticking around means the world to Lucas. It always has.
And what about her? Was she actually considering joining him? Is that what she really wants? Is he what she really wants?
She can feel her stomach turn in knots as she walks back over to her window but instead of closing it she climbs through.

In the aftermath of Riley confronting Jackson he decides he has a lot to make up for. He was tired of letting the people he cares about down so he wanted to do right by her and because she wanted a taste of what life is like when you don’t play by the rules he had the perfect plan.
When the following Friday rolls around Riley waits for her parents to fall asleep before sneaking out her bay window and meeting up with him a block away from her apartment. She knew it was risky behavior considering her and her parents had just established an understanding with each other but she wasn’t done being careless.
Not just yet.
