Please make a post about the story of the RMS Carpathia, because it's something that's almost beyond belief and more people should know about it.
Carpathia received Titanic’s distress signal at 12:20am, April 15th, 1912. She was 58 miles away, a distance that absolutely could not be covered in less than four hours.
(Californian’s exact position at the time is…controversial. She was close enough to have helped. By all accounts she was close enough to see Titanic’s distress rockets. It’s uncertain to this day why her crew did not respond, or how many might not have been lost if she had been there. This is not the place for what-ifs. This is about what was done.)
Carpathia’s Captain Rostron had, yes, rolled out of bed instantly when woken by his radio operator, ordered his ship to Titanic’s aid and confirmed the signal before he was fully dressed. The man had never in his life responded to an emergency call. His goal tonight was to make sure nobody who heard that fact would ever believe it.
All of Carpathia’s lifeboats were swung out ready for deployment. Oil was set up to be poured off the side of the ship in case the sea turned choppy; oil would coat and calm the water near Carpathia if that happened, making it safer for lifeboats to draw up alongside her. He ordered lights to be rigged along the side of the ship so survivors could see it better, and had nets and ladders rigged along her sides ready to be dropped when they arrived, in order to let as many survivors as possible climb aboard at once.
I don’t know if his making provisions for there still being survivors in the water was optimism or not. I think he knew they were never going to get there in time for that. I think he did it anyway because, god, you have to hope.
Carpathia had three dining rooms, which were immediately converted into triage and first aid stations. Each had a doctor assigned to it. Hot soup, coffee, and tea were prepared in bulk in each dining room, and blankets and warm clothes were collected to be ready to hand out. By this time, many of the passengers were awake–prepping a ship for disaster relief isn’t quiet–and all of them stepped up to help, many donating their own clothes and blankets.
And then he did something I tend to refer to as diverting all power from life support.
Here’s the thing about steamships: They run on steam. Shocking, I know; but that steam powers everything on the ship, and right now, Carpathia needed power. So Rostron turned off hot water and central heating, which bled valuable steam power, to everywhere but the dining rooms–which, of course, were being used to make hot drinks and receive survivors. He woke up all the engineers, all the stokers and firemen, diverted all that steam back into the engines, and asked his ship to go as fast as she possibly could. And when she’d done that, he asked her to go faster.
I need you to understand that you simply can’t push a ship very far past its top speed. Pushing that much sheer tonnage through the water becomes harder with each extra knot past the speed it was designed for. Pushing a ship past its rated speed is not only reckless–it’s difficult to maneuver–but it puts an incredible amount of strain on the engines. Ships are not designed to exceed their top speed by even one knot. They can’t do it. It can’t be done.
Carpathia’s absolute do-or-die, the-engines-can’t-take-this-forever top speed was fourteen knots. Dodging icebergs, in the dark and the cold, surrounded by mist, she sustained a speed of almost seventeen and a half.
No one would have asked this of them. It wasn’t expected. They were almost sixty miles away, with icebergs in their path. They had a responsibility to respond; they did not have a responsibility to do the impossible and do it well. No one would have faulted them for taking more time to confirm the severity of the issue. No one would have blamed them for a slow and cautious approach. No one but themselves.
They damn near broke the laws of physics, galloping north headlong into the dark in the desperate hope that if they could shave an hour, half an hour, five minutes off their arrival time, maybe for one more person those five minutes would make the difference. I say: three people had died by the time they were lifted from the lifeboats. For all we know, in another hour it might have been more. I say they made all the difference in the world.
This ship and her crew received a message from a location they could not hope to reach in under four hours. Just barely over three hours later, they arrived at Titanic’s last known coordinates. Half an hour after that, at 4am, they would finally find the first of the lifeboats. it would take until 8:30 in the morning for the last survivor to be brought onboard. Passengers from Carpathia universally gave up their berths, staterooms, and clothing to the survivors, assisting the crew at every turn and sitting with the sobbing rescuees to offer whatever comfort they could.
In total, 705 people of Titanic’s original 2208 were brought onto Carpathia alive. No other ship would find survivors.
At 12:20am April 15th, 1912, there was a miracle on the North Atlantic. And it happened because a group of humans, some of them strangers, many of them only passengers on a small and unimpressive steam liner, looked at each other and decided: I cannot live with myself if I do anything less.
I think the least we can do is remember them for it.
I can’t begin to describe how happy and flattered and a little teary I am that this just broke 100k.
I may be the actual only human being on Tumblr with a post this popular that I not only don’t regret making, but am actually HAPPY whenever I notice a surge in its circulation.
I never intended this to gain any traction at all (you’ll notice there’s no sources or anything–this was a personal ramble, prompted in good humor by a friend after I jokingly said that I wished someone would give me an excuse to cry about Carpathia on Tumblr so I could get it out of my system.) I literally expected to get, like, maybe 20 likes and a reblog, from friends, indulging me in my nonsense.
It just….means a lot to me that it’s touched so many people. I see a lot of tags to the effect of “HOW DARE YOU HURT ME LIKE THIS AND MAKE ME CRY ABOUT A BOAT” that are often really funny, but overwhelmingly the tags on this post are from people saving it for a rainy day, or remarking in a sort of quiet awe that they never even really thought about her role in the story–and God knows I never did, I learned it by complete accident much as most of the people who’ve found this post.
And so many of you guys are taking strength and reassurance from the reminder not only that people are capable of amazing things together, but simply that kindness matters and that a simple, tiny act of compassion is never wasted. I’m just really glad to have been able to do that for some folks.
If I can just add one personal note. I need to emphasize something I only touched on in the original post.
I need to emphasize that Carpathia failed.
A lot of the tags and comments have a tinge of…despair, or guilt, or wistfulness about things like this happening so rarely. Or inadequacy, or just being overwhelmed or unhappy about not being in a position to step up in a comparable way. And I want to gently bring up the fact that this is still the sinking of the Titanic.
They did not get there in time. They did not save the ship. It can be argued that they may not even have saved a single life; we have no way of knowing. This was still a horrific maritime disaster mired in arrogance and incompetence and a lack of care.
If the response to this story shows anything, it shows this: It matters that they tried.
Even though they got there too late, even though the ship still sank. It matters that they tried. The difference between making the best reasonable speed after confirming the seriousness of the situation, and the miracle they pulled off–it matters. It makes all the difference. Even if it made no difference at all. Not one of you read this and concluded that I was stupid for caring so much when the Titanic still sank and all those people still died.
You don’t have to fix the world. You’ll likely be cold and sick and miserable and testy and scared, and unprepared, and in over your head, and entirely too small to be of any real use. It feels stupid, passing out blankets and coffee in the middle of an ice field knowing what just happened. It’s hard to feel anything but useless when all you can do is tap a wireless transmitter and promise help that you know will come too late.
It matters that they fought for those people. It matters that they cared, and it matters that they tried. It matters that they didn’t stop. If it didn’t matter, you wouldn’t have read this far.
came back wrong but its from the perspective of the person who came back
Seeing pictures of yourself -the real you, the one people miss, the one people look for in your eyes- is like staring into a foggy mirror. The parts are there, you think, but the details are lost.
Someone who loves you makes you breakfast. You thank him and eat it despite the fact the eggs are too crisp on the sides and missing much needed salt. He says its how you like it, but that just makes your frustrations boil.
How I used to like it, you want to say, how I used to be.
You grip your butter knife harder and light catches the polished metal. The glimpse you catch of yourself in the cutlery looks nothing like the photo on the mantle.

WHY IS THERE NOT A CUTE SIGN SAYING “Link’s House” IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE
NO NO NO DOES THIS MEAN LINK NEVER FINISHED THAT SIDEQUEST CANONICALLY????????
… Nobody in Hateno recognises Link. They’re calling him a *tourist.*
So either Link literally just now bought the house a week before TOTK started… Or *Zelda* bought it, and she’s just letting Link crash there.
I’m legitimately not sure which answer hurts more.
or hear me out
He bought the house during the first game, but was too much of a nomad for anyone to even realize he owned it. And latter when he and Zelda started living there he just ended up falling in the background, ether because he rarely left the house and was a recluse or because he still just travelled a lot, alone or with Zelda
So listen, there's the whole "Rauru and Sonia being the first king and queen of hyrule" thing. But i don't think they actually founded hyrule, replacing skyward sword link and zelda like ppl think. I think they RE-founded hyrule, after it was destroyed by Ganon.
Zelda looks at the mural and calls it "The imprisioning war"
And seeing what I have from the dragons' tears, she seems to be experiencing this while she's in eeby deeby (the past)
According to the Zelda timeline, the imprisoning war happens in the downfall timeline, right before ALTTP
So Zelda is Here^
So basically I don't think they actually founded Hyrule, like the one that exists from post Skyward sword to OOT, but rather Re-Founded it
As much as i'd like this to be true, but also as someone who has seen all the cutseense for TOTK
Spoilers
I will always reblog this.
I once spent three hours scouring the internet to find this comic again, I will not let that be repeated.
@signoraviolettavalery I meant to ask last night if you’d ever seen this comic before.
This is one of the few things I always reblog when it comes round, because everyone should get to see it.
oh great Minecraft Bee, do you have any fic recs in the realm of hermitcraft, empires, and/or the life series?
(sorry if you answered this recently or don’t want it asked, searching on mobile is difficult)
other than “the sky weighs heavy tonight” by mawofthemagnetar, not really many recently! this isn’t because there aren’t a lot of good fics, this is because I am so bad at reading in my writing fandom and am so bad at remembering fics to actually rec them. like I KNOW I’ve read other fics lately I’d love if I could rec. I just have no idea what they are.
so! here’s where I say: my followers! use this post to fic rec! I could use a rec list too, honestly! and I’ll reblog any lists you give me here! help me and anon out!
DID YOU SAY HERMITCRAFT FIC RECS i CAN DO THAT
#1 (after this all of them are in random order but this is The One): Still the Echoes Give Us Light by doctortrekkie - This is a whole series of fics. Grian-centric (though there are an increasing number of spin-offs that focus on secondary characters). This series takes the Watcher Grian concept and executes it brilliantly, managing to tie together Last Life, Third Life, Hermitcraft season 8, parts of season 7, AND exquisitely crafted original backstories and original characters with a narrative of healing and growth. It's pretty realistic about how messy that gets is in the context of the story.
Redstone and Skulk by Silverskye13 - Focuses on Tango's helsmet, Tanguish, and his relationship with Tango and his fellow helsmets. A lot of really interesting worldbuilding for Helsmets and Hels as a world. A lot more existential pondering than you might expect. It has begun to make me cry almost every update.
jevin's egg disaster by Bee_4 - I presume original Anon has already read this one. "What if Ijevin's hermit Easter eggs hatched?", a series of increasingly absurd vignettes. (I may be using that word incorrectly). It's riotously funny, I'll leave it there.
a body is an object by ruffboi - ONE OF THE SADDEST FRICKING THINGS I'VE EVER READ D; . Somehow the saddest backstory anyone has ever given Hermitcraft Grian. I can not tell you more. I will spoil nothing. It ends happily, I swear. Read it and weep with me.
Monsters Splitting Hairs by Silverskye13 - A fantasy AU monsters-in-disguise (misunderstood monsters not want-to-eat-you monsters...mostly. it's nuanced) featuring Doc, Ren, and Gem predominantly. There's a lot of other hermits in this too but these three are the focus. A lot of themes of what it is for not just individuals but communities to survive a war; what it shapes them into. Good sort-of-family dynamic too.
Covet by Oceanbreeze7 - Grian again, but more about the other hermits (especially the rest of Boatem from season 8) interacting with/reacting to him. It's about a person who was very nearly reduced to an inhuman level learning how to be human again. Or think like one rather. And the people who are helping him.
Adding a few more I haven't seen mentioned yet!
Built Family by Oceanera12 is a cool ongoing fic about different hermit's backstories, They each get a fairly lengthy chapter and it's been really good so far.
On the Edge of the World by roundtriptojupiter Fantasy au fic focused on secrets, ghosts, and a race against a clock. an absolute 10/10 for me.
This is about a stuffed bird by Bee_4 if you haven't read this yet, I'd highly suggest it. It's set in a post apocalyptic world and focused mostly on Mumbo. And yes, it's about a stuffed bird. (I know theminecraftbee wrote this but it's one of my favorites)
Limited Life but the Bad boys are homeless teens that live on the roof of a abandoned manor
They go to school and pretend to be bad and threatening, but they sneak off to go to their secret home (the roof) and they hang around doing "bad" things.
They play board games and read comics,
And at night all three of them cuddle up on a big mattress together because it's too cold to sleep separately.
thinking about the martyn and grian parallels again incidentally. two least trustworthy motherfuckers on the server who have been forever scarred by that one time they were wildly loyal. blatantly, surface-level survivalist and not worth trusting but somehow keep on ending up on teams anyway. keep on having to kill everyone they love. two unguided hands who haven’t left the desert. how do they do it,
AU where Jack dies instead of Janet and instead of Janet ending up with Dana, her good friend and fellow archeologist Helena Sandsmark ends up taking care of her and they fall in love and it makes Tim's secret identity reveal to YJ a bajillion times funnier because Cassie just screams because that's her fucking stepbrother and she is going to murder him for not telling her about this.
Defy the shadow of an old tale
Wayne TV show
Ok so awhile ago someone (I’m sorry I don’t know who, if u know plz tell me so I can credit) came up with the idea of “what if the Waynes have a show like ‘keeping Up with the Kardashians’?”
Well I’ve been reading WFA and was thinking… what if they did have a show like that but the Wayne’s didn’t try to hide their weirdness. Like the weirdness that only comes from there nightlife.
I’m taking:
- Damian keeps threatening to stab people and the crew think it’s a joke until he actually pulls out a dagger.
- Dick decides the best way out of the manor is to do a flip out of a 3rd story window
- Jason jokes about death (both his own and causing other people’s) a little to much
- Tim full on passes out at the dinner table and Bruce just picks him up like he’s a toddler that weights next to nothing and takes him to bed
- Cass has a habit of jump scaring the camera guy by just popping into existence next to them
- They have a game of paintball that gets way to intense and ends up with Stephanie giving a speech that wouldn’t be amiss in a war movie
- After ep 1 a lot of people talk sh/t about them online and in the next ep Barbara just random says names every now and then. It isn’t until after people work out she was saying the names of the worst people that sh/t talked them
- For a long time all the viewers and crew thought Duke was the normal one until ‘the incident’
- Jason and Tim are fighting and it’s getting pretty rough and bruce just spawns outta f/cking nowhere and just picks up the human tank that is Jason Todd like it’s nothing and just walks off
- It becomes a running joke that whenever things go wide the camera just zooms in on Alfred, who just standing in the background calm as can be, as you can just hear the chaos continuing
Like everyone knew the Waynes were crazy but like…….. no one expected this
What you all are looking for is Make it Wayne- Season 1 by Silver_Athena, part 9 in the series Confusing the Justice League and other family activities - Batfam
being in the mcyt fandom is wild. could you imagine going back and telling 9 y/o you that nearly a decade later you’d be taking the silly cartoon guy from ‘how do I craft this again’ classic minecraft parody of ‘when can I see you again’ and spending hours drawing him killing people for sport
AND THATS WITHOUT MENTIONING THE FACT. that he is . the brother-in-law . to Stampy Cat . Stampy Long Nose . Stampy Long Head . Martyn In The Little Woods might be the only mcyt ever actually
Every time I’m reminded of this I think about the fact that on the EVO smp Grian had both the sister of Stampy (Netty) and the brother of iballisticquid (Tomohawk) on his server
Collecting legacy siblings or what?
So a free tool called GLAZE has been developed that allows artists to cloak their artwork so it can't be mimicked by AI art tools.
AI art bros are big mad about it.
As this blog was long built like a sort of portfolio, I've rarely ever shared anything I didn’t make myself. But I really, REALLY want everyone to know about efforts like Glaze, so... I’m sharing this. If you’re following me and are somehow not aware of the state of “AI art”, know that a myriad of artists had their work fed without permission or compensation into the databases of AI image generators. These generators were built on the back of our labour with the intent to replace us entirely, disrespecting the entire art community in the process. They spat in our faces. Well, if they want to feed our work into their machines, I think it’s pretty fair to demand they source it responsibly, instead of automatically scraping it off the Internet. Protect your art, everyone.
Specify in the tags please what species or breed of animal you would choose as a witches familiar if the most obvious were off the table
Let's have fun with this
For example for me it would be a great white shark
Also yes men you can interact with this poll too
Hey I'm gonna start something that'll maybe go nowhere let's go
