🌟 New

  • On web, you can now purchase a new Tumblr Supporter badge that levels up over time, so you can show your support for the platform and help us pay the bills around here more directly. Expect to hear more about this on the @staff blog soon!
  • In the latest experiment on web that makes changes to the post header, we’ve altered it to re-include the post author’s avatar, based on the feedback we’ve received so far. Thank you to everyone sending in feedback about this!
  • We’ve released a new major version of the tumblr.js API client, which you can use to access Tumblr content via our public API. Read more about it here!
  • We’ve also rolled out Tumblr Live to even more countries in the European Union!

🛠 Fixed

  • For those of you who still see floating avatars on the web, we fixed a bug that was causing them to “hide” a little under the dashboard tab bar. Similarly, we fixed a bug that was causing posts to be in the wrong position when using J and K to navigate post-by-post.
  • For those of you who see the new dashboard tab configuration button on web, we’ve added a little more space to the left side of it, so tabs have less of a chance to overlap with it. Similarly, sponsored tabs show a “Sponsored” label next to them in this dashboard tab configuration view.

🚧 Ongoing

  • We’re still experimenting with a big performance improvement for how content is shown on the web, but it broke being able to use Command/Control + F to search for text on the page, for content that’s been hidden after scrolling away from it. We’re working on making this better, and we have a fix in place, so please give it a try again if you’ve been having difficulty with it!

🌱 Upcoming

  • Nothing new to report here. There’s a lot of fun stuff coming though!

🌟 New

  • We’re now discouraging the Common Crawl crawler from scraping content from Tumblr, similar to how we’re discouraging OpenAI’s GPTBot from crawling Tumblr content.
  • On the web dashboard, we added rel="author" to the blogname link in post headers to improve accessibility via screenreaders and other tools.

🛠 Fixed

  • We fixed a bug that was showing the incorrect number of subscriptions a user has for their blog.
  • There was a issue in the post editor on web where photosets were not displaying correctly when placed after a read more block. This is now fixed.

🚧 Ongoing

  • We’re slowly rolling out some more parts of the activity tab/highlights redesign to android users.
  • 🏴‍☠️👒

🌱 Upcoming

  • We’ve heard your feedback about the redesigned reblogs loud and clear and are discussing next steps, thanks!

🌟 New

  • On /search pages on the web, we moved the search bar from the sidebar to the center/main section of the page.
  • For folks in the aforementioned reblog header redesign experiment, we added avatars back to posts from group blogs when the option to show author portraits is enabled.
  • When blocking a blog via a submission in your inbox on the web, you can now block from both your secondary (if it was the recipient) and your primary blog.
  • On the web, we have made some improvements to localized number formatting across all supported languages.
  • On the web, logged out users browsing a blog view will sometimes be prompted to log in after scrolling for some time.
  • We are testing out showing the “You’re all caught up!” carousel to folks with “Best stuff first” enabled.

🛠 Fixed

  • On the web, we’ve made some improvements to the post header in compact posts (like when they’re displayed in a grid on the Explore page, for example). Long blog names, badges, and the follow button no longer break onto a new line in the middle of a word, and each element remains properly aligned in the header.
  • We fixed an issue that caused a bullet point to appear next to the Blogs menu item when using Safari.
  • We’ve made some headway in fixing various issues relating to undo/redo in the post editor on web. You should notice improved stability when using undo and redo in the editor.
  • On the web, we fixed an issue where avatars from anonymous asks were empty.
  • On the web, we fixed an issue affecting the HTML and Markdown modes in the post editor where select all would sometimes select text outside of the editor.
  • We fixed an issue affecting some users where starting a search with a hashtag (#) would return search results instead of results for that tag.

🚧 Ongoing

🌱 Upcoming

  • Nothing to share today.

🌟 New

  • We’re running a new experiment that changes the header on posts to reduce the redundancy of avatars in reblogs, save some vertical space by moving recommendation labels around, afford more room for badges, and more! On desktop web, it also removes the floating avatars and makes posts full width with the sidebars. If you have feedback about this change, please send it in to Support using the “Feedback” category.
  • We’ve removed the blog carousel at the top of the Blog Subs dashboard tab (for those who have it enabled), as it was causing the load time to worsen dramatically. (You can enable this tab in your Tumblr Labs settings, or via the new experimental dashboard tab configuration button if you have it.)

🛠 Fixed

  • Fixed an issue in recommended and related tag card carousels that would show a “Follow” button when you’re already following that tag.
  • We were having some issues with SoundCloud embeds not working in posts, but it’s cleared up now.
  • In mobile phone browsers, the “Source” and “Submitted by” text at the bottom of posts is now correctly aligned on the left (it was a few pixels off).
  • Also in mobile phone browsers, we’ve cleaned up a visual glitch on trending tag pages that was causing the “Trending now” label to be on the same line as the tag itself.

🚧 Ongoing

  • Nothing to report here today.

🌟 New

  • We've streamlined our navigation in a way that will make it much easier for new and infrequent users to level up their experience here. Thanks to everyone who offered feedback, it was a huge help in refining it!
  • The Activity redesign is now live in the Android and iOS apps! It should be much easier to identify unread notifications, as well as notifications from your treasured mutuals and blogs you follow.

🛠 Fixed

  • Blogs that you have recently refollowed after unfollowing will no longer be hidden from your Dashboard. If this has happened to you, please unfollow and refollow the blog(s) in question one more time.
  • If you have allowed mature content, you'll no longer be warned when visiting a blog that contains mature content.
  • Clicking elements of a reblog's header will now take you to the same places in the iOS app as they do in the Android app and on web.
  • The year timestamp has returned to Messages for items that are over a year old.
  • On web, we had some brief issues on Wednesday with blog information (such as avatars and the follow button), but they've been fixed.
  • Spotify embeds are working again! Thank you to Spotify for helping us resolve this issue!

A new way to navigate Tumblr

If you use Tumblr on a web browser, you might have noticed us testing a brand new navigation on your dashboard in the last month. Now, after some extensive tweaks, we’ve begun rolling out this new dashboard navigation to everyone using a web browser. Welcome to the new world. It’s very like the old world, just in a different layout.

Why are we doing this? We want it to be as easy as possible for everyone to understand and explore what’s happening on Tumblr—newbies and seasoned travelers alike.

Labels over icons: When adding something new to Tumblr in the past, we’d simply add a new icon to our navigation with little further explanation. Turns out no one likes to press a button when they don’t know what it does. So now, where there’s space, the navigation includes text labels. Since adding these, we’ve noticed more of you venturing to previously unexplored corners of Tumblr. Intrepid!

What’s already been fixed? Thanks to feedback from folks during the testing phase, we’ve been able to make some improvements right out of the gate. Those include returning settings subpages (Account, Dashboard, etc.) to the right of the settings page instead of having them in an expandable item in the navigation on the left; fixing some issues with messaging windows on smaller screens; and streamlining the Account section to make it easier to get to your blogs.

What’s next? We’re looking into making a collapsible version of this navigation and improving the use of screen space for those of you with enormous screens. We’re also working on improving access to your account and sideblogs.

That’s all for now, folks. For questions and suggestions, contact Support using the “Feedback” category. Please select the “Report a bug or crash” category on the support form for technical issues. And keep an eye out for more updates here on @changes.

🌟 New

  • We've implemented OpenAI’s instructions for blocking GPTBot. This should discourage OpenAI, including ChatGPT, from scraping any part of Tumblr, including individual blogs.
  • We’re rolling out a new redesign of the direct messaging conversation view.

🛠 Fixed

  • The latest version of the Android app (30.8) fixes the issue where links to “View Post” on filtered posts opens the web browser instead of taking you to the post in the app itself.
  • On web, we’ve improved the screen reader hint for tags on posts, so it doesn’t say “Pound” or “Number” when it encounters the hashtag symbol.
  • Fixed an issue on web that was preventing the Related Tags section of the sidebar from showing up on the search results page.
  • Fixed a bug in the mobile apps for group blogs which was preventing members from editing the Notifications settings for those group blogs.
  • We’ve been rolling through some bug fix releases and one major release for the StreamBuilder framework.

🚧 Ongoing

  • Nothing to report here today.

🌱 Upcoming

  • We’re cooking up our first public reveal on the @labs blog, give that blog a follow if you want to see what we’re working on!

🌟 New

  • On web, the keyboard shortcuts reference guide is now accessed through the keyboard icon floating in the bottom-right corner of the page. This replaces the “Keyboard shortcuts” item in the Account menu.
  • On web, we’ve added the current Color Palette selection setting as a dropdown in the Dashboard Settings page. You can still use the Shift + P shortcut to change palettes everywhere.
  • Also on web, if you’re seeing the experimental vertical navigation layout, we’ve removed the Settings sub-menu items in the left sidebar. The Settings nav item now takes you to Account Settings, with the other different setting pages on the right sidebar.

🛠 Fixed

  • In the post editor on web, we’ve adjusted the spacing around the floating content block icons to fit better on smaller screens and not overlap the placeholder text.
  • Over the weekend some users couldn’t access their Following or For You feeds, we resolved the issue after a few hours of investigation, and the feeds are loading again.

🚧 Ongoing

  • We’re still aware that sometimes Spotify embeds are showing a “Not found” error on web, but may work if you try again. We’re still investigating if this is an issue on our side or Spotify’s.

🌱 Upcoming

  • Nothing to report here today either.

🌟 New

  • The regular crab checkmarks and rainbow crab checkmarks from Crab Day are now available in TumblrMart!
  • We’ve expanded Tumblr Live to more countries! Check out this Staff post for the latest update.
  • For those of you seeing the experimental new desktop site layout, we’ve made the Account & Settings submenu behavior a little more predictable: they now stay in the state you put them in (expanded or collapsed) as you navigate within the site.
  • We’ve removed the per-blog submenus from the main navigation in the experimental new desktop site layout. Clicking a blog will still go straight to its blog page, where you’ll still find links to blog subpages like Queue and Drafts in the sidebar on the right.
  • We’re continuing to declutter the Account menu on web, and find better homes for some of the items there. This time, we’ve moved the Help Center link to be with the footer links, which you can find resting at the bottom of the sidebar (on the desktop layout) or at the bottom of the navigation drawer (on the mobile layout).
  • On web, the drag handles for reordering blogs are now visible regardless of whether or not you’re hovering the blog with your cursor. However, they are still hidden on devices that report a touchscreen as the primary pointing mechanism.

🛠 Fixed

  • There was a hiccup on the Following feed that was causing it to run out of posts yesterday, but that’s been fixed now. We’re still working on a few other bugs that could cause the Following feed to run out of posts erroneously.
  • Also on the Following feed, we noticed that we were filtering private posts from blogs you are a member of. We no longer do that. If you are a member of a blog, and a private post is published, you’ll see it on the Following feed.
  • Fixed an issue in the post editor on web that was causing media to re-upload when undoing/redoing certain changes.
  • Fixed a visual glitch on the activity page on web that was causing blog names to appear clipped at the bottom.
  • There was an issue in the iOS app that could cause a video to not start playing when opening it in the lightbox, the latest release (30.6.1) has a fix for this!

🚧 Ongoing

  • We’re aware that sometimes Spotify embeds are showing a “Not found” error, but may work if you try again. We’re investigating if this is an issue on our side or Spotify’s.

🌱 Upcoming

  • Over in @labs we’re working on an experimental feature that’ll let you create “packs” of blogs and tags to use as starter sets when inviting other people to Tumblr. (We need a better name for it, too.) More to come on the @labs blog!

🌟 New

  • On the Android app, we’ve removed the dashboard welcome popup for new users so they can get to finding and curating great content sooner.
  • If you have a custom domain through tumblr, we’ve now given you the option to transfer it away to a new registrar.
  • To help us act quickly on abusive content, the reporting forms now require a link to the post, image, or comment that is being reported.
  • We are removing the “Recently followed” label that is presented in the post header section, from posts that are displayed on the following feed after you follow a new blog.

🛠 Fixed

  • The crabs stole this blog’s checkmarks, but they’ve brought them back.
  • We fixed a bug on web where the activity page wasn’t highlighting new items when you navigated there from the account drop-down.
  • On web, we’ve removed the link to this blog from the Account menu. It didn’t really belong there, and we’re trying to tidy that menu up to make your blogs easier to manage.

🚧 Ongoing

  • We are continuing to remove the option to use the legacy post editor for more users.
  • We are aware of an issue preventing some videos from being played in the iOS app and are working on a fix as quickly as we can.

🌱 Upcoming

  • Nothing to report here today.

🌟 New

  • We’ve updated the text for the blog setting that said it would “hide your blog from search results”. Unfortunately, we’ve never been able to guarantee hiding content from search crawlers, unless they play nice with the standard prevention measures of robots.txt and noindex. With this in mind, we’ve changed the text of that setting to be more accurate, insofar as we discourage them, but cannot prevent search indexing. If you want to completely isolate your blog from the outside internet and require only logged in folks to see your blog, then that’s the separate “Hide [blog] from people without an account” setting, which does prevent search engines from indexing your blog.
  • When creating a poll on the web, you can now have 12 poll options instead of 10. Wow.
  • For folks using the Android app, if you get a push notification that a blog you’re subscribed to has a new post, that push will take you to the post itself, instead of the blog view.
  • For those of you seeing the new desktop website layout, we’ve eased up the spacing between columns a bit to hopefully make things feel less cramped. Thanks to everyone who sent in feedback about this! We’re still triaging more feedback as the experiment continues.

🛠 Fixed

  • While experimenting with new dashboard tab configuration options, we accidentally broke dashboard tabs that had been enabled via Tumblr Labs, like the Blog Subs tab. We’ve rolled back that change to fix those tabs.
  • We’ve fixed more problems with how we choose what content goes into blogs’ RSS feeds. This time we’ve fixed a few issues with how answer post content is shown as RSS items.
  • We’ve also fixed some layout issues with the new desktop website navigation, especially glitches caused when resizing the browser window.
  • Fixed a visual glitch in the new activity redesign experiment on web that was making unread activity items difficult to read in some color palettes.
  • Fixed a bug in Safari that was preventing mature content from being blurred properly.
  • When using Tumblr on a mobile phone browser, the hamburger menu icon will now have an indicator when you have an unread ask or submission in your Inbox.

🚧 Ongoing

  • Nothing to report here today.

🌱 Upcoming

  • We hear it’s crab day tomorrow on Tumblr. 🦀
  • We’re working on adding the ability to reply to posts as a sideblog! We’re just getting started, so it may be a little while before we run an experiment with it.

🌟 New

  • We’re running a new experiment in activity on web with more visual design updates.
  • We’ve rolled out a new top navigation bar in the iOS app. (This was already rolled out in the Android app.)
  • In the post editor on web, you can now reorder where an existing poll is in the post content when editing a post with a poll.

🛠 Fixed

  • We’ve fixed a bug in blogs’ RSS feeds that could prevent a title from being set on individual items in the feed.
  • On web, we fixed an issue that was causing the reblog icon at the bottom of posts to be misaligned by a couple of pixels.
  • We’ve fixed a bug across all platforms that was showing the “Mutuals” label for privately answered asks in activity when you aren’t mutuals with the answering blog.
  • We’ve fixed a bug on web that was preventing “retired” themes from appearing on their creators’ theme management page.

🚧 Ongoing

  • The new navigation layout experiment on desktop web is still going, and we’re still collecting feedback, making iterative improvements based on that feedback, and fixing bugs that people have pointed out to us.
  • We’re also fixing issues that are being reported to us about the direct messaging redesign experiment on web.

🌱 Upcoming

  • We’re working to fix a wide range of scroll performance issues on web, which has helped dramatically conserve memory usage and CPU in our tests so far, especially for folks using Tumblr in a mobile browser.

🌟 New

  • We’ve launched a new badge you can earn for viewing 601 or more posts on Tumblr in a day!
  • We’ve also launched the new activity view redesign on iOS, the same as what we built on web.
  • On desktop web, we’re running an experimental new version of the site navigation, which some users are seeing. This is a big change! Please send any constructive feedback you have to Support as “Feedback”. We’re reading through every piece of this feedback.
  • We’re also experimenting with a new design refresh for the direct messaging conversation window on web. Please send in feedback about that as well if you have any!
  • Also, we’re experimenting with new additions to the For You feed that aim to help get exposure to blogs that aren’t getting as much attention and engagement as more established blogs.
  • You can now edit posts with polls in them, and you can remove the poll, but you can’t edit the poll options themselves after the post has been created.
  • You can now upload WebP images in posts.

🛠 Fixed

  • Fixed a bug in the post editor that was allowing multiple native videos to be uploaded in the same post, and in reblogs, which could cause errors and the post being lost.

🚧 Ongoing

  • We’re aware that posts have been marked with a “Mature” community label incorrectly, and the appeals process failed. We’re working to resolve these issues ASAP and ensure it does not happen again. We’re truly sorry about this, it’s not acceptable for us to mess up this process.
  • There is a bug in the Android app causing it to crash if certain gifts are earned. We have a fix for this coming in the next version of the Android app.
  • We’re aware of a bug in the activity view in the iOS app which is duplicating the blog name in the activity text. We have a fix coming in the next app version here, too.

🌱 Upcoming

  • We’re working to add the ability to report ads specifically because they contain flashing images, so we can take action on them faster.

  • We’ve renamed the “Include stuff in your orbit” dashboard setting to “Include posts liked by the blogs you follow”. It still controls the same behavior: whether or not you’ll see posts liked by blogs you follow in your Following feed. Also, reminder that you can hide your own likes from this feature in your blog settings.
  • On web, on the mobile layout of the site, we’ve shuffled the order of the items in the navigation drawer slightly.

  • You can now upload a WebP image as your avatar.

🛠 Fixed

  • We’ve added a new Featured Tags theme variable for custom theme developers to use in blog themes.
