WALT DISNEY ENDED USING HER MULTI PLANE TECHNIQUE IN HIS OWN MOVIES! AND SHE FUCKING MADE THE FIRST FEATURE LENGTH ANIMATED MOVIE!! (she ended up fleeing Nazi germany eventually work in north america, both us and canada, on other movies.)

God, this pisses me off so much.

There is something seriously wrong with our justice system.

Frida Kahlo disliked white capitalism intensely, so I would recommend not buying images of her on socks or whatever from big box stores especially if you’re white.

What I would recommend instead is make your own art and design inspired by her. She taught underprivileged teenagers art in the years leading up to her death. Her class was multicultural due to Mexico accepting refugees from WW2 including Jewish people(she herself was half German Jewish). She was very pro DIY and I think would’ve been flattered by fan art that’s not sold for money.

its not that americans can’t read subtitles and watch international films but the propagandist arm of the us empire doesn’t want its citizens to see films from other regions, particularly their adversary nations, because they know that cinema could humanize the very same people and culture they try really hard to vilify. its better to exaggerate the inaccessibility of subtitles and limit distribution of foreign films so people are forced to be pacified by english blockbusters. 

americans really think their government tries so hard to limit foreign films like… no yall are just too lazy to go online and find somewhere to watch foreign films can yall stop pretending the reason you dont watch foreign films has to do w american imperialism as if yall are small babies that cant navigate the internet to go and watch films??? like do you have no agency of your own? can your people not think of other people as human without seeing them in movies? dont make excuses for your own laziness, if american imperialism is affecting anything in regards to foreign films its how so many of them now try to be as much as american films as possible by shedding their own cultural ties, the only thing keeping you from watching foreign films is an inability to google “watch solaris 1971 online”

So, this is wild but… How do you expect Americans to learn about foreign films they may want to watch? This is the first time I’ve heard of Solaris. How could I Google the name of something I’ve never heard of before?

This shit has layers. Subtitles are one. Silence about foreign art is another. I think the only foreign markets that get even niche marketing are Anime and Bollywood.

What’s the most popular french movie of the last decade? No idea. Would I want to watch it? How should I know?

Sure, it’s a one inch barrier… On top of several other one inch barriers. As soon as you know about them you can cut through like Gossamer, but until then you can even see through them.

Jokes on this one because in Poland there was no marketing for korean anything until 2018 and yet I’ve seen people watching k-dramas many, many years earlier. You simply haven’t heard of Solaris, because you weren’t interested in the niche that film falls into (neither did I). I also have no idea about the most popular french film of the decade (despite quite a big marketing towards french films in my country) because I don’t give two shits about this, because I have other pieces of media that I find better suiting my interests. Just go to any pirating site (some of them have their movies/series categorised by countries so there you go), look up for small local events on fb, go visit wikipedia, get lost in the wide wilds of the information jungle called the internet. Don’t rely on what’s popular and/or marketed.

americans be raging bc a south-korean man who has probably watched subtitled films his entire life (like all non-english speakers do ever since we're old enough to read) told them to stop being so fucking lazy, ignorant and self-centered and start reading like the rest of us and this is the best way we could have started the awards season. i am having a great time

what if public libraries were open late every night so that:

- children and teens who cant get home until a later time have a safe, warm, well lit, populated area to socialize, charge devices, rest, etc

- children and teens have a safe place to go to stay away from danger

- people who have jobs that take up most of the day would still have time ANY DAY OF THE WEEK to go use the libraries facilities (printing, computers, etc)

This is exactly what public libraries are trying to achieve - public libraries as a third place is a whole thing - it’s just that the funding isn’t there (yet).

Libraries need and deserve so much funding

I’m going to apologize if this post comes off as sounding very aggressive, but having just been through one of the most stressful experiences of my entire career in libraries: 

if you want this, you need to be at your local community government meetings. you need to be talking to your representatives.  you need to be out there Lobbying.

Just a few weeks ago, my library, me, my coworkers, we had to write letters, send emails, make phone calls, speak at council meetings, just to beg our aldermen to give us our usual funding. Which they didn’t even give to us last year.  Losing last year’s funding forced us to cut staff, hours, and all of our databases.  If we’d lost this year’s funding? two positions would have been gone and we would have likely had to close on Saturdays.  On Saturdays.  The day of the week most of y’all working M-F jobs actually have time to go to the fucking library.

And do you want to know how much money we were asking? We were asking for an increase of approximately 13 cents a person.

ACROSS AN ENTIRE YEAR.

No one seems to understand how libraries are funded.  It’s not just Free Stuff.  It’s your tax dollars being paid back into your community.  It’s crowdfunding.  The highest cost anyone in my community pays for the library a year is approximately $250.  Divide that up.  That’s just $4 a week.  That’s less than a coffee.  It’s the equivalent of purchasing about 10 hardcover books a year.  For that price, you could have access to every book that has ever been written, a place to go that’s not a bar, programs for kids, teens, and adults, educated staff that can help you find the answers to your questions, and so much more.

You want these late-night libraries?  You want all this stuff?  Start fighting for it.  Start showing up.  Start making phone calls.  It’s not going to come out of thin air.  Start fighting to erase the idea that taxes = evil.  Start fighting to spread the understanding that taxes are what help us build a better society.

Make sure the people who represent you know that you want this.  That this is where you want your tax dollars to go.  That this is what you want them to support.  That you are willing to see your tax bill go up a few more dollars for this.

Because otherwise?  None of this is going to happen.  Libraries are going to keep cutting their opening hours.  Keep cutting staff.  Keep cutting programs and databases and collections.

We NEED your support, and we need more than just a post on Tumblr.  We need to see people show up and speak out.
