This is a huge misconception for regular Americans. When the government uses the phrase “undocumented” they’re using it incorrectly because if they were truly undocumented then they would’ve be in system. However these immigrants are in the system and they pay taxes, file tax returns and get no benefits that citizens and legal residents get. They also get to see ICE showing up at their doors because the government has their addresses. “Undocumented” just means “without papers,” i.e. a social security card, valid visa, etc. They’re still on databases and whatnot, they just don’t have the documentation that allows them to reap the benefits.

Mary is trans on purpose! I did this art piece in dedication to the transfem butches in my rural Appalachian hometown who, ironically, taught me everything I know about bein' a man! They were my mothers when I needed a mother and my sisters when I needed a sister and my friends when I needed a friend, and they were the first trans people I ever met as a newly out transmasc in a small town.

It's not meant to be a 1:1 thing where, like, they're Mary and I'm Jesus. That would be nuts. I chose religious imagery because I met them in PFLAG meetings that were held in the basement of this really striking church.

The piece is called "Seeing Spots" and it's about the way the sun would hit the floors of the church filtered through the stained glass. It's about getting your lights knocked out in a bad fight and knowing there's no comfort waiting for you in your own home. It's about the spots on a fresh baby deer, yearning to be a buck. It's about a lot of things, but mostly it's a piece about gratitude and reverence and love.

My own mother, who died when I was thirteen, called me Bambi when I was little, which is why I used deer imagery instead of the traditional lamb!

I flyed on a airplane for the first time in about 12 years a few weeks ago and I don't know how any person with even an iota of pride or self-respect could endure such unendurable behavior without just instantly becoming an anarchist on the spot

the last time i flew, the heroes to whom we all owe our continued safety as a nation were deeply baffled as to how to uphold their sacred duties when confronted with a cripple. they pulled me aside at the body scan under the assumption that i wouldn't be able to go through it because i was using a wheelchair, and they only became more confused when i told them i could stand long enough to walk through the scan.

this seemed to distress them, sensitive valiant creatures that they are. so they insisted i wait. for. an. HOUR. while everyone else in line went through until they could get someone to pat me down without making me stand. never mind i told them i absolutely could stand. (standing for two minutes in a scan is not the same thing as standing/walking for HOURS across a huge ass airport??)

and then when the long-awaited fondler arrived--heralded in legendary lore akin to the whispers passed from generation to generation of the some-day-second-coming of King Arthur--the first thing they said to me was, "i'm going to need you to stand up."

seriously what the FUCK i could have just walked through the scan. they didn't even SEARCH my chair. i didn't have any explosives on me but oh how they made me wish i did

As someone who once worked for TSA and aviation you all need to remember that airport security is mostly for optics. Its to make the general pearl-clutching public feel like something is being done to stop scary things and also to be a deterent for would-be assholes who want to cause trouble
