Hot take: most people who were against the bombing of Hiroshima would be all for the atom bomb being used against Germany. The issue isn't about the atom bomb per se (since no one cares about how much conventional bombing was done of Axis targets) but the perception that Imperial Japan "didn't deserve it." And it absolutely did, as you may gleam if you ask any Chinese people about it.

The other thing is that whether they "deserved it" or not, the big argument is that "Imperial Japan was about to surrender, making the bombs pointless!" If there is one thing that the Imperial Japanese were absolutely famous for doing during the war (aside from torturing prisoners), it was NOT SURRENDERING, EVER. They'd fight to the death or commit suicide before surrendering.

And the entire population was set up to do the same. I recall seeing an interview with a woman who had been a young girl during WWII, and how their teachers had switched their school lessons over from things like reading and math to "how to stab American soldiers in the stomach with a bamboo spear". She was given an icepick and told "if they invade, try to get close and stab one in the stomach." This was an elementary school girl.

I also read a memoir of a doctor who treated the Hiroshima patients. When the Emperor came on the radio and said that the war was ending, the majority of these folks - in hospital, covered in burns and suffering from radiation sickness - were pissed. "We can't quit now! If we do, what has all of this suffering been for!?"

The Allies had every reason to believe that Japan would keep fighting.

The only thing sadder than all the mothers that get off scot free for mistreating their sons, are all the men that realize from a very young age how their mother will never be there for them when it comes to men's issues.

Sure, she might dress you and feed you, but if you're her son and you were abused or raped by a woman? Stop being misogynistic!

And it starts smaller and more insidiously than that too. Sons of those moms grow up thinking they're lesser for being male and expecting unfair treatment for being male because of constant small hurts

Just love picturing /r/antiwork-ers hanging out with billionaires on the weekend talking about motives for public philanthropy efforts.

As for the post itself, there's definitely an argument to be made that billionaires have a strong motivation for PR related reasons to donate, but there is very little motivation for them to do it for tax breaks. They are almost always better off financially moving their money through other mediums.

I’ve met exactly one billionaire. Genuinely a nice person, but wildly out of touch with reality.

I'm pretty sure I've met precisely zero.

I also like how the redditor thinks they can mind-read motives. "Yeah, he ACTED nice, but that's only because he was on camera!"

Meanwhile, Bezos donates countless millions to causes he apparently sincerely believes in, Bloomberg personally spends more on gun control lobbying than the NRA does on all lobbying, and Musk took a soaking on Twitter X to make the world a better place, as far as anyone can tell.

These idiots really believe that the second someone's net worth ticks over to nine zeroes, they stop being anything but selfish.

Met one, was part of a group I was with we were doing a talk at a local high school about local arts and music and the importance of them, sat with her for lunch.

Not gonna go into much more personal detail because I like to keep at least some mystery about where i live, but the family is well known for sponsoring the arts and has a multitude of other philanthropic endeavors as well.

They also pay their people well and take good care of them in all the other ways.

Nice woman who do good things with their money but don't slap their names on all of it.

I imagine there's a good portion of them like that, kinda like how we only found out how Keanu or Ryan Reynolds have major philanthropic efforts going because someone started digging to find them.

Not gonna say they're all so great or anything, they do exist.

For every single feminist snottily telling people to quit taking "kill all men" rants seriously bc of COURSE feminists don't want to kill all men

This is almost every man ever to make a "get back in the kitchen" joke.

I eagerly await the list of excuses as to why #killallmen is better and kindly request you bring me a sandwich with it

Avatar

*Hands Cyan a nice reuben sandwich*

So off the top of my head some excuses would be:

-“Systemic sexism”

-“History of oppression”

-“Well they do worse!”

-“It’s totally different!” and refuses to elaborate

-“Blowing off some steam/stress”

-“Oh my God how can you not take a joke.”

-“[Slur]”

All shitty attempts to cover the whole “I just want to be an absolute bitch to people” thing.

Told husband "sorry, I have to go marry someone on Tumblr" and he said "ok have fun" so you're my spouse now. Who needs a ring when you have a Reuben

And yeah absolutely. Whereas the dudes making kitchen and sandwich jokes don't need any excuse because they just find it funny and it isn't a fucking death threat.

They praised Cuties

They stayed silent on Weinstein for decades

They hung around with Epstein

They defended Polanski

They ignored Balenciaga

But they actively attack sound of freedom because the film based on a true story “supports dangerous conspiracies”

Hollywood is doing a real good fucking job at disproving the conspiracies

That is very much what all of the headlines are designed to make you think. I'm afraid you fell for one of the classic blunders.

Tim Ballard is very much a real person, and so is Operation Underground Railroad - the organization he founded to combat child sex trafficking, which has performed dozens of bust operations on sex trafficking rings over the past decade.

Sound of Freedom is about one of those busts in particular, I think.

Sound of Freedom is about "Operation triple take" where there were actually 3 stings going at once in Colombia. The movie just depicts one of the stings from that day.

Imma go ahead and add a donation link here 😉

Cuties was not satirical at ALL?? Holy smokes babe, new fucking hot take right there. "Don't worry officer, I only had children do inappropriate sexualizing behaviours for my parody, I did it ironically and for the lulz, so it's A-OK."

Go away forever pls

“We’re going to call attention to the sexual abuse of children by sexually abusing children”

Cuties was a festival film that should never have been viewed outside the festival circut.

Because the message Cuties wanted to send is great, and if they had just...made other choices when it came to visuals it would have been a better movie where the message wasn't drowned out by the controversies.

I just gotta point out that the film festival that Cuties was created for, and won several awards at, was run by a person who was subsequently convicted of raping multiple children.

Boy it is a fucking take to be like: “Yeah, the film about sexually abusing children would’ve done better if it had stayed within the small community of people who enjoy that sort of content, as it was originally meant to.”

Also, the absolute hilarity of ignoring that the movie sexually abused children and acting like the subject matter is the problem and not the fact that the real live human child actors were made to do these things on camera for entertainment

I have always found it strange that true crime content, overwhelmingly, is always about women being raped and murdered, with very few deviance from this. And like yes they are things that happen but men are killed much more frequently, you can't tell me that some how people cannot find anything else to talk about.

I'm not saying it's some sexism, a conspiracy or anything but just simply that women getting murdered seems to cause more morbid curiosity? I don't know it's just strange and progressively more uncomfortable to me.

As someone who is greatly stepping away from true crime content, it's just something I noticed recently.

I have no theories on this. I guess it's like with videogames. An entire army of men can get killed like frogs in a blender, but the second you shoot a stripper everybody loses their minds.

That doesn't seem unfounded, of anything a great educated guess. While I mostly have left true crime behind there are a few I still watch, like Dave's Lemonade. But it's because he manages to capture humanity when he discusses a court case and it feels like he genuinely talks about things because they intrigued him. Not shock value.

I just am so fucking over hearing about serial killers, especially the same few ones. Like I don't care about them and a lot of people seem to glorify them sometimes. Don't even get me started on the ones that do a hybrid of mukbang/true crime. Like I'm sorry but you just cannot sit here and talk about the brutal murder of someone like that. That's a human person's life. While I understand it's a form of morbid entertainment I feel there's a way to be tasteful and respectful. I like true crime to remember the victims. I love hearing about the people who loved them and how their memories lives on. Seeing someone do their make up while barely capable of stating facts like an adult just pisses me off as well.

the moment i realized Erika Furudo from Umineko was meant to be the human embodiment of the True Crime Fandom a lot of things fell into place in my mind

if Candice has a picture phone why did she never just take a photo of what phineas and ferb were doing and text it to her mom

if she did this doofenshmirtz would just be like you see perry the platypus i sold my old computer at the pawn shop but i forgot to delete all those embarrassing photos from the christmas party, which is why i’ve invented the pixel-replacinator! and then as candace is going to text her mom the photo the phone gets hit with the beam and she looks down and she’s just texted her mom a photo of doofenshmirtz in a sexy elf costume or smth. candace can never fucking win the universe bends to facilitate her psychological torment

Also this is proven true by the movie. Reality iself will bend, no matter unlikely and absurd the situation, to prevent Candace from showing what Phineas and Ferb are doing to her mom. She literally weaponizes it to dismantle a transdimentional invasion.

This is fascinating and I love the part with the mushrooms and the worms if this really works but my favorite part is that we spent decades like “oh no....oil is soaking into fur and feathers....if only we had something that could soak up all this oil”
