Having fun isn't hard, when you've got a library card!

@certifiedlibraryposts

Not an actual librarian, just very passionate about our local libraries! Feel free to message or @ me with any good posts about libraries!

For some reason my last pinned post disappeared?? I don't know if I deleted it on accident or what.

But regardless, I usually keep it lighthearted here but I wanna make sure this is clear:

This blog supports the queer community, people of color, Jewish people, disabled people, and other marginalized folks.

AND FREE PALESTINE 🇵🇸

This is not a place for bigots, TERFs, or exclusionists. The spirit of libraries is to promote free and easy access to stories and education about all kinds of human experiences, including those different from yours. If you don't like any of that, this isn't the place for you.

What are your thoughts on including manga, graphic novels and comic books to a library's collection?

Avatar

Hell yeah!! I love libraries making all kinds of art and literature available!!

I've never been a huge manga/comic person myself, but recently I've been checking out thr Dugneon Meshi books from my library's manga section and its been a great idea, thank you my library's manga section

This might be a long shot, but I'm wondering if you or anyone else here knows any good resources about the daily lives, work and roles of British victorian librarians? To be more specific, late-1800s London librarians and libraries?

Stuff like how libraries were maintained, how and what kind of books were acquired, how lending worked, accessibility for the poor vs rich/middle class, the daily responsibilities of a librarian, etc.

For context, I'm writing a comic and want to be as historically accurate as possible, but I have a really hard time finding any research material for this for some reason ^^;

Ooh, that sounds incredibly cool. I don’t know where to find sources on that but maybe someone else would! Good luck with your comic!

public libraries are so sick. there are five books I want to read and they're all relatively new so they're only available in hardback which is so expensive but it just cost me $0 to place holds on them. five books for zero dollars. it requires nothing but clicking a button and then going to the library to pick them up when they're ready. zero dollars. that's crazy

So Fox News ran a story about how they think libraries are turning into drug-infested sex dens and I am shocked, shocked that I was never offered any drugs during my 15+ years working in libraries.

Avatar
faeriekit

Where do they think the sex is happening?? Every single aisle is lit in that horrible LED lighting. The teens don't even make out here anymore.

As a state certified librarian I can assure you that you just have to go into your local library and ask if they're participating in the new Fox News Hysteria program smh. If they're not, you'll just have to renew your library card and use the fun and valuable resources they're offering right now, such as wifi hotspots, museum passes, dvd lending, mid level adult erotica, ebook lending, and printing! 😔

Libraries give us a green light to experience something truly special: a place to connect with others, learn new skills, and pursue our passions through book clubs, storytimes, movie nights, crafting classes, lectures, and more. Visit your local library this weekend! #NationalLibraryWeek

Horse book recs? Other than The Key to You and Me, I haven’t read a lot of queer horse books 👀

Avatar

thank you so much for sending the first ask that made me choke on my coffee because at first I misread it as ‘the horses must be queer'

I have to admit this is not an area of expertise for any of us on the QLL team, but here are a few ideas:

  • Horse Girls, edited by Halimah Marcus: okay so not entirely sure how queer this one is, but one of the contributing authors is Carmen Maria Machado
  • The Big Book of Lesbian Horse Stories by Alisa Surkis & Monica Nolan: cannot speak to quality as I’ve only just learned this exists but it’s meant to be in the flavor of mid-century pulp novels! just might buy this for QLL in the future...
  • this is not exclusively horses, but this goodreads list might have a few more ideas too!

Pas de deux by EJ Noyes, a sweet story about a lesbian couple falling in love amidst the chaos of preparing for the Olympics.

a few more recs in the comments & tags y’all! 🐎 🏳️‍🌈

oh my and I can’t believe I forgot Just Pervs by Jess Taylor/Katharine King So - not only does a good portion take place on a horse farm, the cover is well.. click through and you’ll see

I've had a couple of messages over the last few days from folks saying things like, "Sorry, I can only afford to get your book through the library," and I need you to know I am gripping you by the shoulders, I am shaking you gently, and I am begging you stop apologizing for using library services.

After Amazon and Payhip, the quarterly checks I get from Overdrive/Libby are my biggest and most reliable source of income.

My readers have been nothing but feral in their quest to get Hunger Pangs into as many libraries as possible, and while library lending pays an exceptionally modest amount, if enough people do it (which many of you evidently are), those pennies add up.

I am guaranteed at least $20 a month in library lending royalties. That might not sound like much to some folks, but to me, that's my b12 supplements covered for the month. That's the thing I need to keep me alive paid for.

I will never resent anyone who uses libraries instead of buying books.

I'm a disabled author who lives month to month at the mercy of my medical expenses. Even though I have incredibly generous patrons and supporters, I know what it's like to not be able to afford things.

Use the library. Please.

Use it guilt-free. You're helping the library and the authors, probably more than you realize.

And if you're in the US and haven't signed up for a @queerliblib free library card yet, you should! it doesn't matter what state you're in, the Queer Liberation Library offers free access to their catalogue of queer media across the US.

And if you've got the means, maybe help them out with a little donation. They're only able to expand their collection via the support of their patrons, and the work they're doing is hugely important.

If you sign a Canadian book out of a Canadian library, that author gets paid too! It's once a year, but my cheque is usually 2 months of my mortgage. Plus, libraries buy a lot of books! And if you sign out copies, they'll get worn and replaced! Same with ebooks! Plus the library will have record of you using it, and that's how libraries get funding.

Get my books from the library. It's a multi-win situation.

I went to the library to borrow some DVDs we're planning to watch, but when I handed the librarian my card, it took me a solid 15 seconds to register that I handed her my fucking weed card.

Me, fumbling to swap it out: "OH MY GOD, I AM SO SORRY, I was on total autopilot!!"

The librarian: "It's all good, I just assumed it was a flex."
