My dear lgbt+ kids, 

I occasionally see posts like “You know someone is boring when they write their gender identity and sexual orientation in their blog description - they have no personality except for being lgbt+”. 

That mindset really confuses me, and not only because I wasn’t aware law requires you to spell out your entire personality in your blog description. Mine says “Inbox opens on Friday” - I guess that’s my whole personality, dear me! 

Sarcasm aside: The idea behind such posts is nothing new. It’s just a modern spin on the same old “Keep it in the bedroom” mentality. 

But being lgbt+ is not dirty and we don’t need to stay silent about it, just because someone doesn’t like to hear about it. 

And “you have no personality, you just have labels?” - well. so does everyone. Straight cis people may not like to hear that but they, too, define themselves with labels. Even when they don’t feel the need to introduce themselves as straight and cis (because they live in a society where everyone is straight and cis until proven otherwise) - they put things in their blog description like “Proud mom of two boys”. “Marvel obsessed”. “Republican” or “Vegan”. 

Those are labels. And yet, I haven’t seen many posts saying “You have literally no personality except for being obsessed with Marvel.”. 

If they were honest, they would admit it’s not the act of putting a label in your blog description that they have a problem with. Labels are just a convenient way to describe yourself and potentially connect with people who understand. 

They just don’t want us to be so visible. 

Don’t let them make you feel bad for putting your labels on your blog. People who only support you if you’re silent, invisible are not worth your time.
