not to be sappy on main BUT one thing that i really loved when studying linguistics was that the more important a word is, the earlier the concept of this thing was given a word. for example, the word water is similar in many similar languages (aqua, agua, água). so, the more important a word is, the more languages it’ll be similar across and the older this word will be, theoretically and generally speaking (many other things also affect this)

AND SO in my years studying linguistics, there was one word that was nearly identical across so many regionally different languages (though there are outliers of course), from europe to most of asia to subsaharan africa to indigenous languages. across nearly all languages this is the first word people learn how to say and maybe the first word humans in general officially named and defined:

  • mamãe - portuguese
  • 妈妈 (māmā) - chinese
  • ਮੰਮੀ (mamī) - punjabi
  • mamah - mayan (yucatec)
  • мама - bulgarian, russian, ukrainian
  • ماں (mäm) - urdu
  • মা (mā) - bengali
  • mẹ (may) - vietnamese
  • ママ (mama) - japanese
  • అమ్మ (am'ma) - telugu
  • mama - quechua
  • મમ્મી (mam'mī) - gujarati
  • അമ്മ (am'ma) - malayalam
  • amá - navajo
  • 엄마 (omma) - korean
  • māmā - native hawaiian
  • onam - uzbek
  • aana - yupik
  • mema - tagish
  • μαμά (mamá) - greek
  • mama - swahili
  • أمي (umi) - arabic
  • mayi - chichewa
  • माँ (ma) - hindi
  • mam - dutch
  • ម៉ាក់ (ma) - khmer
  • แม่ (mæ̀) - thai
  • அம்மா (am'mā) - tamil
  • අම්මා (ammā) - sinhala
  • amai - zulu
  • ama - basque
  • आमा (āmā) - nepali
  • အမေ (amay) - myanmar (burmese)
  • אמא (ima) - hebrew
  • mamá - spanish
  • mom/mum- english

this isn’t actually the first word because we teach babies this word (most likely), but because the “mama” or “ama” sounds are the easiest things for babies to say, and it’s nearly always the only thing they can say at first, and adults across all languages defined their language around that.

babies all over the world for thousands and thousands of years all started out blabbering sounds like “mama” and mothers everywhere were all like Oh Shit That’s Me! I’m Mama!

I want to tell y’all a story about supporting and loving your partner, starring my amazing wife.

I’ve mentioned before that I had an eating disorder for many years, and though I consider myself “recovered” there are aspects of my disorder that I still struggle with today — being quite a bit heavier than my wife is one of them.

When my wife and I moved in together back when we were still girlfriends, I was at my skinniest. She used to pick me up all the time and lift me off the ground, and I’d laugh and kick out my legs ‘cause I was just delighted to have her holding me.

But I started gaining weight as I went through recovery, and where once we were pretty close in size, I began to get bigger. And bigger. And bigger. And she remained her naturally petite self. I began to almost dread when she’d try to pick me up, sure that this time she wouldn’t be able to get me off the ground.

But every time, even if I protested, she’d lift me up and say something like: “See, you’re not so big that I can’t lift you!”

And one time I just blurted out: “But someday I’m going to be so fat you won’t be able to.”

She looked me dead in the eye and said: “No you won’t. Because if that ever happens, I’ll start working out.”

It was the best possible thing she could have said to me, because she wasn’t saying I wasn’t going to get fat — neither of us knew that for sure. She was just saying that I was never going to be “too fat” for her.

And every time I worry about getting bigger, I remember that I’ll never be so big that she can’t lift me, because baby knows how much I love being held, and she’ll change her own habits to ensure that I never feel “too big” or “too heavy” because in her eyes I’ll never be “too” anything.

Anyway, there’s a moral to this story: Find yourself a partner who will never consider you an excess. You should never be “too much” to someone who loves you — too big, too loud, too passionate, too awkward, whatever your “too” happens to be. And even as you change and grow (in my case, literally), the right person will be there through the changes, to tell you that you’re always just right for them.

My strongwoman, the wind beneath my wings, the arms under my ass.   😍😍 😍

say it with me now..

2018 Goals

Since last week I’ve been getting extra money at work for free

Yo Canada, quick question. Why is your money see through?!?

so we can shine a laser pointer through the window and see the value amount projected afar as added protection from forgeries

Yo USA, why the FUCK are we still using fragile scraps of linen like fucking animals when we could have fucking Laser Show Dollars instead?

I want to move to Canada just because their money is so cool

likes charge reblogs cast, folks, this is the good luck post

why are star wars planets more boring than earth and our solar system like sure we’ve seen desert, snow, diff types of forest, beach, lava, rain, but like…

rainbow mountains (peru)

red soil (canada/PEI)

rings (saturn’s if they were on earth)

bioluminescent waves

northern lights (canada)

salt flats (bolivia, where they filmed crait but did NOTHING COOL WITH IT except red dust?? like??? come ON)

and cool fauna like the touch me not or like, you know, the venus flytrap.. and don’t get me started on BUGS like… we have bugs cooler than sw aliens

BASICALLY like???? come on star wars you had one (1) job where are the cool alien species

I KNOW!! I did a report on filming locations in Star Wars last year and just made a list of places that looked so surreal they could make a convincing other planet. You covered some on my list but if I could just add a couple more:

Tsingy di Bemaraha, Madagascar

Zhangye Danxia, China (similar to the Rainbow Mountains in terms of appearance)

Chocolate Hills, Philippines

Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland

So many missed opportunities with cool ass things on Earth, Lucasfilms smh…

Earth is effing amazing!

Quebrada de Humahuaca, Argentina

Lake Retba, Senegal

Tepui, Venezuela

Tianzi Mountains, China

these would make amazing Star Wars planets OR fantasy material:

Tsingy du Bemaraha, Madagascar again (but a different part)

(those are razor-sharp, if you were wondering. very little of this area has been explored because YIKES)

Lake Natron, Tanzania

(looks cool, but is alkaline enough to Kill Your Shit)

Lake Baikal, Russia

(the deepest lake in the world, seriously)

and I’ll wrap it up with Son Doong Cave, Vietnam, the largest cave in the entire world.

it puts anything Dagobah has to offer to absolute shame:

(seriously, the largest chamber is 660 feet high. you could jam a fucking skyscraper in there and still lose it

anyway I really like caves thanks for coming to my ted talk

Just adding onto this collection—Star Wars aside—because there are some manmade places/landmarks that are pretty extraordinary too.

Field of Jars, Laos (ancient, uncertain origins; heavily damaged by American Forces in the Vietnam War, now partially a hazardous minefield)

image

Stone spheres of Costa Rica (ancient, uncertain origins/purpose)

Anasazi ruins, USA (ancient, uncertain origins)

Nazca Lines, Lima, Peru (ancient, uncertain origins)

Malakoff Diggins, Nevada City, USA (result of hydraulic gold mining)

Nuestro Pueblo “Watts Towers”, Los Angeles, USA (lone man spent 33yrs building these in his yard)

Aaand a couple natural things that I can never get over:

Image

Banyan trees, India (one tree takes root repeatedly and looks like many trees)

May the next few months be a period of beautiful transformation
