I just want to read a book drinking my cold coffee.
Everyone loves Meows Morales
I was lucky enough to get sent a copy of this book by Faber, and after reaching Come Closer by Sara Gran a couple of years ago I thought I knew what to expect from this novel but I was completely wrong.
In The Book of The Most Precious Substance we follow Lily, a has-been author and currently a rare bookseller trying to make ends meet whilst supporting her slowly dying husband. Lily’s life takes a turn when she’s asked to acquire an incredibly rare occult grimoire supposed to give the user unlimited power.
I love a book about books personally, so I was hooked in from the beginning. But I was surprised at how little darkness and horror there was for a long time, given the plot. But when it does get dark it hits you like a wave of witchcraft, blood, sex, and horror. And I finished the book feeling like I’d gotten exactly what I hoped for.

Elizabeth when she learns Charlotte and Collins are engaged: You were just supposed to distract him, not marry him!
“Someone once said that the moment you stop to think about whether you love someone, you’ve already stopped loving that person forever.”
