Thunder Rose (2007)

“Thunder Rose is an African-American child born on a stormy night abuzz with booming thunder, flashing lightning, and hailing rain. Her parents are awestruck by her remarkable gifts, which include forming a ball out of lightning, speaking in full sentences minutes after her birth, and snoring through a booming, thunderous rumble.

It is clear that Rose is no ordinary child. She can lift a cow over her head and almost drink it dry, and as she grows, she does incredible metalwork with scraps of iron she finds around the ranch. She uses her handiwork to restrain cattle, round up would-be rustlers, and lasso and squeeze the rain out of the clouds. She fearlessly faces down a couple of tornadoes and calms them with her “song of thunder.“

Nolen and Nelson offer up a wonderful tale of joy and love, as robust and vivid as the wide West.”

When you’re feeling crummy and don’t particularly feel like talking about it, sometimes simply connecting with another person is enough to help you get through the rough patch. All it takes is the simple act of reaching out.

As Tumblr Creatr Nicole Zaridze (@nicolezaridze) shows, sometimes simply knowing that someone else is there for you in difficult times is enough to put a smile on your face – and theirs.

The fact that a 12-year-old has to take the initiative…

On Sixth Anniversary Of Flint Water Crisis, Flint Still Has No Backup Water Source

Flint, MI–On the sixth anniversary of the Flint water crisis, Flint is again in the midst of a crisis.

Six years after the disastrous switch to the Flint River as a source of drinking water for the city, which led to an outbreak of Legionnaire’s Disease and toxic levels of lead leaching into the water, the city remains in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act for not having a reliable secondary drinking water source.

Mayor Sheldon Neeley sent a stern message to Flint city council Monday to, “finish the job,” referring to the 21-inch diameter, five-and-a-half-mile pipe, that would connect Genesee County’s water system to Flint. The pipe would ensure that should the current system, which pulls Lake Huron water via Detroit, fail, Flint would have a readily available source of water.

As of now, the only backup source the city has are water reservoirs, which would only supply residents with drinkable water for a matter of days. If anything, such as a major line break or any other unpredictable event that could compromise the city’s water, it’s unclear where Flint would go next once the reservoirs run dry. “The results could be catastrophic,” Neeley said.

The city, per federal law, must have a secondary source of water. The proposed project would be paid for by an Obama era bill, the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act. The act authorized $100 million in funding for “Flint, Mich., to recover from the lead contamination in its drinking water system.” According to the EPA, $87 million of that money has not been spent.

The proposed backup system was due to be completed in December of 2019 at a cost of $14.7 million in federal funds. On Monday, the council again voted 4 to 4 delaying construction.  A majority vote of six would be needed from the nine-person council to reconsider the contract before they could revisit the project.

Hydroviv was founded as a response to the Flint water crisis and is providing filters to people who need them, not just in Flint but other cities as well, at cost. Mari’s fund is trying to reach its third goal of $200,000. Pictured but not linked: https://www.gofundme.com/f/TeamMariWater

Of course, the point of the article is that filters would not be as vital if the local gov would DO THEIR FUCKING JOB, WITH MONEY THEY WERE ALREADY GRANTED.

And here.

He now thinks every awful thing he does is “romantic”, rather than “stalkerish”, “unwanted” and “alarming”.

I have to give full credit to the writers - they played this downhill road for Phoebe and Cole in the most dangerous way possible: slowly.

The writers did such a good job with Cole. They constantly showed his dark side. He had his grey-ish moments but overall he never was a good guy. The fandom just didn’t want to accept that making up excuses for him and blaming the sisters

Oh, I was totally all for Cole when I first watched this, because thanks to pop culture back in the day, we were trained from a young age to think his actions were romantic. I had a long discussion with my partner about this re: Edward in Twilight, and why it’s possible young people don’t see how harmful and abusive that relationship was.

But yes, the writers for Charmed went down the right path with Cole, exploring the true danger, and I’m only just appreciating it now.
