I drew this blobby boys comic for Vice earlier in 2015. It’s kind of intense, but the topics discussed in each panel seemed to become more visible & topical as the year went on!

i’m having a moment. • shoutout and strength to all my black & poc artists and comic artists. Support each other. Always publish your work. Strengthen each other. Take care of each other. Be communal and resilient, compete healthily and water each other. Watch out for the parts of the field you love, dehumanizing you. Erasing you. Appropriating you. I love you and i’m glad you’re here. It’s hard, but stay. above image is a silkscreen of a drawing from 2013. Bleeding Heart. We don’t have to stay quiet in the face of racist, viciously dismissive industries. We have to help each other. We owe it to ourselves to SHINE.

There were at least 21 different comic book distributors in North America in 1986. Now in 2016 there is essentially one.

Creatives! Check Out This Interesting Project From Friends of KP!

We are creating a Welcome to Toronto themed colouring book that will be distributed to Syrian refugee children as they settle into their new Toronto/GTA homes. Not only is colouring a therapeutic activity that can ease stress and anxiety that many of these children will be dealing with, it is a way to unleash self-expression, build confidence, and with directed imagery, can be a fantastic vehicle for children to learn about their new surroundings. The project was started in Windsor, Ontario by Bronwen Wood. You can read more about how it started here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/syrian-refugees-windsor-colouring-book-1.3365963  We are working alongside Bronwen to create a Toronto version to welcome these children and introduce them to our great city! WE WOULD LOVE YOUR HELP… We are looking for contributions of black line illustration by a variety of Toronto artists that will be used as the pages in the colouring book. We are in the process of setting up a GoFundMe page to begin raising funds to cover the costs of printing and binding, and for some crayons and coloured pencils to be gifted along with the books. We will secure a local printer in Toronto, and will be working with the Syrian Canadian Council for distribution. http://syriancanadiancouncil.ca SUBMISSIONS SHOULD1. Be a Toronto themed illustration. Please find some very general ideas below, but do not hesitate to “colour outside the lines,” (wink wink). These themes may seem cliché, but should draw on imagery that is recognizable, iconic, and unique to the City of Toronto. They should be age appropriate and appeal to children, and above all, be fun to colour in/on/around! - beaches, parks, trails, paths- food : a variety of types and districts- architecture : iconic, recognizable buildings/structures- transportation : trains, planes, subway, streetcars- Canadian culture, history- arts, sports, sciences- cultural/ethnic diversity, acceptance, and inclusivity (while imagery should be specific to Toronto or the GTA, please try not to refer to any private business/enterprise so as to avoid inadvertent “advertising”) 2. Include a suggested simple sentence that speaks to your theme. Please send this separately from the drawing in case any slight adjustments need to be made to accommodate smooth translation to Arabic. Both the English and Arabic translation will be printed on each page, so that children can begin to learn simple English words and phrases. 3. Be provided as a single page measuring 8.5” wide, by 11" high. in .PDF format. (if you wish to propose a drawing that is laid out as a two page spread, this would be cool as well - in this case please discuss format with us!) The illustrations can be made digitally or otherwise (hand-drawn or collaged and scanned) -  please ensure that you have a high-resolution image with nice crisp lines that will be fun for children to colour. We are here to help with this if you are not digitally inclined ;) If this project interests you and you would like to contribute, please reach out to us by January 3rd, 2016. We would like to try to collect our submissions by February 1, 2016 so that we can get the books printed and distributed as soon as possible. (We will keep a list of illustration subjects to ensure variety and avoid 20 renderings of the CN tower ;) Your help will be beyond appreciated and you will be helping to make a huge difference in the lives of children who’s innocence has been stolen from them. There is hope for them in Canada and we should all be very proud of supporting our new neighbours! Please contact us if you have any questions. If you are unable to participate for any reason, we sincerely want to thank you for reading about our project, and wish you a Happy Holiday! Best, Nicole Baillargeon & Andrea Pearce baillargeon.nicole@gmail.com
