I WOULD PAY TEN TIMES AS MUCH FOR CHOCOLATE IF IT MEANT REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF SLAVES IN THE WORLD? HOW IS THIS ANY KIND OF PROBLEM.

Avatar

good news, you can! the company’s called Tony’s Chocolonely and their entire purpose is to make slave-free chocolate and reform the chocolate industry.

Whole Foods carries it. If you don’t want to support an Amazon-owned company, World Market carries it. You can also buy it directly from the company.

It’s the best chocolate I’ve ever had and it’s 100% slave free. Tony’s Chocolonely works really hard to push for transparency within the chocolate industry and actually has and is following an action plan to eliminate slavery within cocoa production. They’re good people who make good chocolate.

Crazy how the main three chocolate companies in the US are all terrible

Makes sense

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but it is absolutely an example of civilizational inadequacy that only deaf people know ASL

“oh we shouldn’t teach children this language, it will only come in handy if they [checks notes] ever have to talk in a situation where it’s noisy or they need to be quiet”

My mom learned it because she figured she’ll go deaf when she gets old

My family went holiday SCUBA diving once, and a couple of Deaf guys were in the group. I was really little and I spent most of the briefing overcome with the realization that while the rest of us were going to have regulators in our mouths and be underwater fairly soon, they were going to be able to do all the same stuff and keep talking.

The only reason some form of sign language is not a standard skill is ableism, as far as I can tell.

For anyone interested in learning, Bill Vicars has full lessons of ASL on youtube that were used in my college level classes.

Posts that chide people for not buying local but don’t tell you how to buy local? Cancelled.

In most of the US you must have a USDA license to sell meat products that you’ve grown and processed yourselves. Small farms may not be allowed to sell meat directly to you unless it’s been processed at an inspected & licensed facility.

In my corner of the world it usually works like this - person A has a cow or cows they wish to turn into hamburgers. Person A finds out how much it’s going to cost to have the cow processed and asks people in their community if they’d like to go in on a half or quarter of a cow. Alternatively person A has the cow hamburgled and then asks the internet if they’d like to buy cow bits. Cow gets burgered, money changes hands, ???, steaks.

I see advertisements for “sides” “quarters” and various specific cuts of meat already processed on Facebook a lot but I’m in the kinds of local farm groups where those transactions take place. If you aren’t there are several websites set up specifically to connect buyers and local sellers.

Americangrassfed.org and localharvest.org are two that are widely used. Alternatively search “your State Farm swap” on Facebook and you’ll probably find a group that supports this kind of thing. You can also look for your local USDA processors online. Some will sell product direct some will not, but they are generally a good resource for contacts. I know several here in Oklahoma and Texas and they’ve been a wealth of knowledge.

Eggs? Ask on Nextdoor or another local social media group. Someone in your vicinity probably has hens.

If you’re in a more urban area you can also go the good old farmers market or co-op route. There’s almost definitely one near you, expect to spend a bit more and have more of an open mind when shopping but if you aren’t finding what you need ASK! people who raise and grow things know other people who raise and grow things. They may have a contact for someone who has what you want.

Anyways. That’s my big disjointed post. Please add to it if you have other resources.

So, you all know that adorable little pitbull puppy John Wick adopts at the end of Chapter One?

Well, I have a question. Did any of you…

Look closely at the clipboard?

He saved it

Danielle Nierenberg, President of Food Tank, shares a sustainability pro-tip in honor of Earth Day. Instead of wasting leftover pasta water by pouring it down the sink, you can save it, let it cool and use it to water your plants. The starchy H2O will give them a beneficial nutrient boost and help them grow. Just be sure to avoid using cooking water that has been salted or seasoned.

This also applies to leftover water from boiling spinach, potatoes, and hardboiled eggs, according to Reader’s Digest.

this definitely is an amazing thing to plants, it gives them a boost like NOTHING that can be bought in stores. ive had an orange plant that didnt bloom for years and then gave them some pasta/potato water twice a week, and now its blooming like crazy , pretty much over night. and plants that were looking kind of drawn are looking BEAUTIFUL!

The first pride was a riot, more specifically a riot against police violence. Trans women of colour like Marsha P. Johnson paved the way for the celebration of pride today. You cannot celebrate your pride this month, or any month if you aren’t also supporting Black Lives Matter and the riots going on against police violence right now. Us white LGBTQ+ need to stand up for our black siblings and their rights, their struggles. We need to amplify their voices and show any support we can.Hey! Better yet, reblog this version:

The ancient greeks really had graves for dogs. And they carved stuff on the stone like “carrying you here, I now feel as much grief as I felt joy when I carried you home” and “you never barked without reason, but now you are silent”. The human urge to tell a story spans centuries and millennia, and the loss of a really good dog makes you want to tell people - even people centuries in the future, who will never know your name - that there once was a dog who was a very good girl, but now she no longer is and you aren’t sure what to do with all this sorrow.

This is my very favourite thing.

Last year, I found this one tucked away in a corner of the archaeological museum in Istanbul:

The inscription reads:

“His owner buried the dog Parthenope, that he played with, in gratitude for this happiness. [Mutual] love is rewarding, like the one for this dog. Having been a friend to my owner, I deserve this grave. Looking at this, find yourself a worthy friend who is both ready to love you while you are still alive and will care for your body [after your death].“

On so many of the other funerary carvings, the text was often more about the person who commissioned the carving than the person the carving was commissioned for. This one, which is for a dog, doesn’t even identify his owner—it’s entirely about a very, very good boy named Parthenope, who was loved so much that he will be remembered forever.

god this is so affecting

just one thing- Parthenope is a feminine name, so this dog was in fact a very, very good girl!
