i like going to sit down in cafes to work because sometimes there is a random free range baby there
ill be going through tax forms or emailing someone and oh look theres three year old brandon on the floor. you just get to see babys run around in the wild like its nothing and no one does anything to stop it. its really quite beautiful. hes eating house plant mulch with his hands now

im not a game designer by trade either (just when needed or to help others) so anyone can correct me on this, but i feel like part of a games success has not just become hinged on whether its fun to play, but also whether its fun to watch be played. its true the youtube lets play bubble has popped and dropped significantly, but its still absolutely there and has sort of just evolved into twitch streaming.
and little siblings everywhere will tell you watching their older siblings or cousins play games was likely their first exposure to them - especially if you arent from a very well off family, theres not a lot of disposable income going towards making sure each kid has their own console. youd be lucky if theres one for the whole house really.
so to have a game that people can experience through someone else in the form of streams or lets plays, youve expanded your audience (and therefore your fanbase) to more than the people who can afford it. but theres also a lot of games that dont... work very well as a speculative experience. they might be fun TO play, but not to watch. and i think thats something that ends up killing a lot of games

can i be so honest for a second. with the initial disclaimer of 'undertale is also just a really good game', i cant take anyone seriously who asks why undertale got more popular than like, any triple A game or game that requires a console/beefy computer. undertale was 10$ and could be played easily on my 6 year old apple laptop that used to emit sparks. it was accessible to the most powerful audiences: broke people and teenagers
the reason anything gets as popular as it does is you make it welcoming to the people who are going to spend hours talking about your Thing. and who has hours to talk about something other than people with no job (me at the time) and children (also have no job and have not yet learned the social expectation of shame about their interests. based)
the people who ARENT going to obsessively talk about your thing are people with jobs. they may not even finish your game, let alone play it. some might of course but if you want people to actually give a shit and prostelitize for you you need to remember whos actually doing that
and furries as well
