Catharina2003 on AO3

@catharina2003-ao3

This is just my tumblr for updates about my fanfictions

A few of these are probably referring to the date posting bug thing, but AAAAAAAAAAAH!

I beg of all the younger folks on Ao3 to understand two things:

  1. There is no algorithm on that site.
  2. Unlearn the attention-hungry bullshit that social media has taught you.

from someone who’s been on ao3 for 5+ years: don’t do this. don’t repost your fics (youll lose your comments and kudos if you do) and don’t change the posting date (people can tell and it’s tacky). it’s not worth keeping your fics on the front page. if you tag correctly people can and will use the very competent search function to find your work even if it’s YEARS old. if youre writing something ppl want to read they will look through their favourite tags to find it. having high interaction, being posted recently, or posting at “peak” times won’t get you any more hits bc that’s not how anyone uses the site.

IT IS AN ARCHIVE NOT A SOCIAL MEDIA SITE

IF YOU WANT TO PROMOTE IT YOU MAKE A POST ON OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA SITES BY OFFERING A SUMMARY AND A LINK

IT. IS. AN. ARCHIVE

TAG YOUR SHIT PROPERLY AND PEOPLE WILL FIND IT AND READ IT IF INTERESTED

When I started reading fics, readers would save fics a lot just in case they got deleted, but now I'm noticing this trend of "don't download and print fics without the author's permission." Is that the new norm or am I just following fandom newbies?

You're just following fandom newbies.

This is a discourse that goes around every once in a while, and I'm not really sure of the root cause of it. My guess is authors who are insecure in some way and need to feel a measure of control over their works. Or authors who are planning to pull their work off AO3 in order to file off the fandom serial numbers and publish it as original fiction.

If you don't want people downloading your work, don't put it online. It's that simple. As soon as it's on the internet, it's downloadable - whether there's a conveniently placed button or whether it's via screenshots or whether it's using an extension that pulls text into a notepad file.

Sorry authors, but if you really don't want people saving your fics, you kinda need to not share them. And readers? Just because a Big Name Fan says something, doesn't make it true (myself included).

You may be focussing on the wrong part of the sentence. The "don't download and print" convo recently resurfaced on TikTok, because people were going to professional book printer locations to print many different copies, resulting in printing companies earning money of printing work that wasn't theirs or the property of the person that submitted the request.

This got a lot of people afraid of copyright, resulting in the request to not print.

I'm out right now, but I'm just imagining a DSMP (SBI + Benchtrio centric) Batfam AU.

  • This would have Tubbo (I'd write him as protagonist, but obviously, you wouldn't have to) as Tim Drake.
  • Phil is Bruce, obviously
  • Wilbur is Dick Grayson
  • Techno is Jason Todd (voices/lazarus pit) (He'd be dead at the beginning in mine, but he'd obviously be back)
  • Ranboo as Cassandra Cain (traumatised, has to learn go speak)
  • Tommy as Stephanie (Loud, underestimated by everyone, but eventually helped by Tubbo and Ranboo to become a vigilante) (No shipping, obv. )
  • Niki as Barbara Gordon

Bonus:

  • Sam as Lucius
  • Puffy as dr. Thompson
  • Fundy as Luke Fox

Feel free to add on, I probably will later too. Maybe in a separate post though. Idk.

(I'm using the tag DSMP batfam AU either way)

Pre-canon fic.

Post-canon fic.

That-little-bit-in-the-middle-that-canon-skipped-over fic.

Needs-to-keep-its-voice-down-because-canon-is-sleeping-in-the-next-room fic.

Peering-over-canon’s-shoulder-and-making-weird-faces-when-canon-isn’t-looking fic.

You-can’t-prove-it’s-not-canon fic.

thats just canon compliant fics op

Avatar

There are degrees of canon compliance.

There’s canon compliant as in “you’d need to double check to make sure this isn’t just a retelling of something that happens in canon”.

There’s canon compliant as in “technically this doesn’t actually contradict anything that’s explicitly established in canon”.

And there’s canon compliant as in “prove me wrong, fucker”.

Anybody can just blatantly ignore canon, but sometimes you want to challenge yourself – and sometimes challenging yourself means writing a hypothetically canon-compliant fic that reveals the protagonist’s heretofore-unmentioned housecat was secretly (albeit inadvertently) responsible for all of their notable victories.

I love that final one. I have written (but not published) so many... technically canon complient fics that followed the letter of canon but not the spirit, and it's so satisfying

I saw a post about c!Tubbo originally coming from 2b2t and I cannot stop thinking about it.

I kinda want to write a fic about it, but I haven't figured out the details yet.

  • Tubbo grew up only knowing anarchy. He might be on an infinite respawn server but dying meant losing everything, and as a kid, he died a lot.
  • Tubbo might have grown up only knowong anarchy, but what he did know, he hated.
  • If there's one thing Tubbo learned it was to survive in chaos, so that's what he did, he survived and he collected weapons, anything from tnt and lava to nether crystals and withers, anything to keep himself safe, and eventually, rich.
  • He became rich enough to buy himself a place on the permanent whitelist, so that he could leave the server freely and explore other servers without losing his home.
  • He visited a lot of servers, but it was hypixel he spent the most time on, and it was on hypixel when he met two brothers who would change his life, Wilbur and Tommy.
  • Wilbur was an admin of his own server, SMP Earth, where Tubbo resided with them for a while, but during a longer stretch where Tubbo spent keeping his stuff safe on 2b2t, Tommy had been invited to the Dream SMP and Tubbo's invite followed shortly.
  • It was all fine for a while, Tommy had invited Tubbo to help with his fight against Dream, but nothing serious was happening yet, at least... until it was.
  • All of a sudden there were nations and factions forming, and the fact that there only were three respawns made things dangerous, for if he were to die, he would respawn back on 2b2t, but he'd lose the access to the server he'd died on, and anyone who lived on there, he'd only be able to watch.
  • And then the elections went wrong, Tubbo became a spy and he lost the second one of his lives to Technoblade of all people. Techno, a guy that everyone knew had been trying to get whitelisted on 2b2t for years. He was everything Tubbo did not want to be, and he took away the second of Tubbo's 3 lives.
  • And then Wilbur died, and Tubbo was made president, and Tubbo realised with a shock that no one here knew what server Tubbo had come. No one knew Tubbo_ had only ever known places without a government, and so no one realized that Tubbo's only example of what he was supposed to do had come from Schlatt.
  • But Tubbo did know one thing. He had to keep L'Manburg and its citizens safe from both Dream and Techno, because if he didn't, this server might become exactly like the server he had fled from. So when push came to shove, he had to exile his best friend, because he had no idea what else he even was supposed to do.
  • And yet, the tnt fell down, and withers were spawned, and none of the others had ever seen such chaos before but Tubbo wasn't surprised, this was what anarchy brought with it, after all.
  • And as the dust settled in L'Manburg, and Tubbo moved away to found Snowchester, he did something he had hoped to never have to do again. For days on end he worked inside his little town and he invited everyone he could to live with him, and he primised to keep them safe the only way he knew how to.
  • It had been years since Tubbo had truly caused chaos somewhere, and as he went to the nuclear test side, he could help but grin; he still could do it.
  • Silently he smirked, and when Technoblade inevitably came by snowchester, Tubbo couldn't help but brag about his weapons, hoping to send one message:
  • "You want anarchy, Techno? Be prepared for what comes with it."

good night to people who write extremely rare-pair fanfiction, enthusiasts of the college au, people who hate canon with a passion, people old enough to have been squicked, gen z wattpad users, forgotten OCs from 13 years ago, the kudos button on ao3, people who write one-shots exclusively, the first kisses that happen on chapter 42 at the Earliest, enemies to friends to enemies again to lovers, and lastly… people who comment on fanfiction regardless of when it was posted

i want a story about a cleaner who comes from a long line of cleaning ladies & washer women & it’s the family business going back generations. except for the last 150 years or so they’ve also been illegally cleaning up crime scenes & disposing of bodies…..constantly gathering & passing down knowledge mother-to-daughter on how to beat the latest development in forensic technology

How do you come up with this stuff what deal did you make…

deal with the devil that gives me a shiny new idea every hour & no executive function to manifest them into longterm projects

ao3′s orphaning option is cool and a good idea but mostly very fucking funny. i posted this work for fun when i was younger and i still want people to be able to come back to it if they liked it, but now im an adult professional and i dont want it attached to my name. whats the word for that? umm, anonymously posting? no. i want something that indicates i murdered this story’s parents

Avatar

technically the story’s parents faked their own death and disappeared to go have an office job, and that’s even funnier

There's no feeling more frustrating in the world, then finishing a fic, and just wanting more.

You want a fic that tics the EXACT boxes that the fic you just finished ticked.

You keep looking, but you just can't find it.

And you realise that what you really want, is to reread the fic for the first time again.

But you can't.

Or worse, you want a fic that ticks the exact same boxes but ticks them better.

Exactly

Anonymous asked:

i dont really write fanfic myself, but one of the ways i really like interacting with them is by adding prose or a scene to an existing fic while trying to mimic the author's style. ive always been a bit anxious that the authors would be offended by this somehow, so i was wondering about writers opinions on readers doing things like this? would mentioning doing this in the comments, or posting the additions somewhere with a link back to the inspiration, be appropiate?

I’ve had it happen, both in my comments and with the “inspired by” link and I’ve been thrilled to bits each time. I think it’s a very sincerely and wonderful compliment, myself.

What about the rest of you? How would you feel if someone wrote an additional scene or an extension to an existing scene for one of your fics? And how should they go about posting (if they should post it at all)

Avatar

somebody did a little drabble like this in the comments on one of my fics once and i loved it so much i headcanon’d it and then put it in the next fic, so, like, personally speakin... this makes my entire YEAR.

I'd LOVE that

Me: okay yes I have 10,000 words on this fic I'm actively writing

Me: but is that ENOUGH to justify uploading it to AO3? what if I never finish it?

Me: I should probably write more. Maybe even FINISH IT lest I curse AO3 with another eternally unfinished fic

A random fic in the fandom feed direct from AO3: whaddup here's the 300 words I wrote before i got stuck, I might finish it, I might not, no promises

Me: 👀

Me: *whispers* is that ALLOWED??

YES please upload ;-;

I want to write. I have ideas. I open document. I type four of the worst sentences ever created in the english language. I daydream the rest of the scene. I close document.

Writing is a process that often undergoes heavy edits… that includes responding to feedback.

I had no idea this post would resonate with so many people. I let my vitriol surrounding several comments I received on a recent update get to me and it spilled out into .gif form and it’s now morphed into the most widely shared thing I’ve ever posted. So many comments and tags have said things along the lines of, “This was why I quit writing” or “This is why I hate writing fanfic.” And that’s soul crushing to hear, but I can relate.

But while there are some crappy and entitled readers, there are also many brilliant ones and I’m so grateful for them. The huge response to this post made me go back and skim through the comments on my old stories, and comments like the one below are about half the reason some of those stories got finished, even if it was months later.

Comments like these are so rare, but when they do come up, they leave me staring at my computer screen, drumming my fingers on the keyboard, struggling to convey my feelings about how their words have touched my heart. These are the comments that take the longest amount of time to respond to and the ones that cause me to wear out my backspace key the fastest.

It’s easy to complain, but it’s literally just as easy to praise, so I just wanted to take a moment to recognize all those dear and dedicated readers who have propped me up when I wanted to quit. Readers like you are why I keep writing, and why I even feel honored to do it on rare occasion.

And fellow writers, keep your heads up if you can. :)

Tbh, Archive of Our Own has made taking the end of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D so much easier. The sheer amount of Philinda, FitzSimmons, Philindaisy, Dousy (Sousy), MackElena and overall S.H.I.E.L.D family fics are like a bandaid for my poor AoS-obsessed heart.

(Pic is basically unrelated I just like seeing them smiling)
