I’ve seen a few ~aesthetic~ photos of rock stacks in rivers recently and this is just a reminder that you are destroying habitat when you move rocks around in rivers and streams.
In addition to dragonfly nymphs, rocky river beds are home to lots of other larval invertebrates like damselflies, mayflies, water beetles, caddisflies, stoneflies, and a bunch of dipterans. Not to mention lots of fish and amphibians!
Plus large scale rock stacking can change the flow of a stream and lead to increased erosion.
Anyway dragonfly for admiration:

Everything is something’s habitat. You might as well not go outside for fear of stepping on some larval beetle.
This is hugely missing the point. The idea is to enjoy what’s left of our natural spaces while having as little an impact as possible. It’s not difficult to avoid intentionally destroying habitat. I recommend looking into the Leave No Trace principle which is very important for conservation. Cynicism doesn’t help anything.
You can read more about Leave No Trace here.
I just want to add that it’s actually not rare or unusual for a single seemingly ordinary creek to be the only known habitat of an entire species. Sometimes just one little bend or one waterfall in that whole creek. In fact this was possibly the norm at one time, but we just didn’t notice before settlers caused most of those species to go extinct.
It’s not something that only persists in far off exotic locales; there’s a stream near me that runs right through a parking lot for a developed park, and there are THREE invertebrate species that have never been documented anywhere in the world but that creek. Last collected from under the train tracks a little ways down from the parking. Last time I went, there were McDonald’s soda cups in it. The unique invertebrates have also been seen higher up the mountain where that creek begins, but those McDonald’s sodas alone could have decimated a major population for all I know. The last published report on those species is over a decade old.
Frustrating when people think presidents are all-powerful. Especially when they don't have a majority in congress. Especially especially when they're dealing with a SCOTUS, 1/3 of which was appointed by a criminal.
Most of these are absolutely fucking nothing, like, bare fucking minimum empty gesture political moves. "Pete Buttigieg appointed to do-nothing job" and "Kamala Harris marches in pride parade" are less than nothing. A lot of these entries aren't even things that Biden has done so much as things he's called on other parts of the government to do or things they're maybe kinda sorta thinking about forming a committee to look into the practicalities of someday doing.
>February 8, 2022 - President Biden Tweets His Support for the LGBTQ+ Community
Are you kidding? Are you actually joking? That's how little the Biden administration has done for LGBT, they have to cite him making a fucking tweet.
Let's take a look at the latest entry, the "series of actions to protect the LGBTQ+ community."
Oh my god, you guys aren't going to believe this but it's even more fucking nothing!
To protect against these increasing threats, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with support from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will launch the LGBTQI+ Community Safety Partnership. The Partnership will work hand-in-hand with LGBTQI+ community organizations to provide critical safety resources to ensure these organizations can remain safe spaces for the community. In acknowledgement of the mistreatment that LGBTQI+ communities have often faced in interactions with law enforcement, the Partnership will also work to build trust between LGBTQI+ organizations and federal law enforcement agencies.
Launching a committee isn't doesn't protect queer people. "Provide critical safety resources" is an empty-handed gesture. "Building trust between LGBTQI+ organizations and federal law enforcement agencies" doesn't do anything to protect those people. It goes on to describe just how empty this "partnership" is.
The Partnership will:
Provide dedicated safety trainings for LGBTQI+ community organizations and increase federal threat briefings for LGBTQI+ organizations. DHS, through the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), will provide trainings to LGBTQI+ community organizations – including community centers, small businesses, and Pride festivals – to help them prevent and respond to threats. DHS will host bi-monthly threat briefings (or as required based on changes in the threat levels) for LGBTQI+ organizations to provide updates on the threat landscape and review key indicators of violence, and offer resources for local leaders. DHS will also lead a series of workshops for LGBTQI+ community organizations to raise awareness of federal funding for both physical security and threat prevention grant opportunities.
This is some real "personal covid risk assessment" shit. It's not actually doing anything to protect people, but training them to take responsibility for their own protection? It's basically an admission that they 1. aren't going to do anything concrete about the source of these threats, and 2. the LGBT community can't rely on law enforcement to actually protect them. The best you can hope for is some half assed "training" so you can "respond" to people coming to murder you. "Sorry fags, you're on your own."
Protect health care providers who serve the LGBTQI+ community. DHS and HHS will work with health care providers and medical associations to provide access to safety trainings and improve threat reporting to support doctors, clinics, and children’s hospitals that face increasing threats when they care for LGBTQI+ patients.
Again, no actual physical support, just more bullshit "training", and not even that, but the ubiquitous Democrat bullshit speak of "providing access to." So, they're not requiring that this training be done, they're not doing anything to prevent any of these threats, they're just promising that they'll have some workshops available and that they'll report increased threats to these people, but not actually do anything to stop it. Great, thanks.
Support LGBTQI+ communities to report hate crimes and build cross-community partnerships to address hate-fueled violence. U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, FBI Field Offices, DOJ Community Relations Service (CRS), the Civil Rights Division and others will undertake targeted engagement with community groups from the LGBTQI+ community and other communities victimized by hate crimes to increase understanding about how to report hate crimes. DOJ will also enhance public trust and public safety by partnering with state and local law enforcement agencies to increase the number of law enforcement officers who have completed CRS’s training programs on engaging with transgender individuals. Through its United Against Hate initiative, which brings together diverse communities to help improve the reporting of hate crimes and provide an opportunity for trust building between law enforcement and communities, DOJ will engage LGBTQI+ communities and other communities victimized by hate crimes as the program is expanded to all 94 U.S. Attorneys’ Offices by the end of September.
More bullshit "training!" Hooray! The problem with cops and the LGBT community isn't that these fucking pigs haven't been "trained" properly on how to deal with transgender individuals, it's that cops are a violent gang whose entire purpose is to terrorize working people. Suggesting that the solution to anti-trans violence is to work more closely with cops is a sick joke.
The National Center for Transgender Equality found that 58 percent of respondents who had interacted with police who knew they were transgender in the previous year reported that they were harassed, abused, or otherwise mistreated.[169] The police violence that transgender people face is both racialized and gendered.[170]
Advocates and transgender individuals shared incidents where transgender people were harassed or left to fend for themselves by police.[171] Diamond Stylz, a transgender advocate in Texas, said:
>There are so many stories of cops telling them I’m going to lock you up if you don’t suck my dick for free. Or, when I see you out here, I’m going to lock you up, because I don’t like you…. There’s tons of instances where police are assaulting people because they hate you or they have the power to exploit people because of their position… because who’s going to believe the trans woman over the cop?[172]
Rachel B., a transgender woman in Florida, shared a recent example of a friend who “was picked up in a routine traffic stop for a light, and as soon as they saw the driver was trans, [it was a] lack of respect, unnecessary force, verbal force, and I got out of the car and asked for the badge number and that set him straight a bit, but she was still arrested.”[173]
This can deter transgender people from relying on police when needed; 57 percent of transgender people surveyed said they did not feel comfortable calling the police when they needed help.[174] Melissa D., a transgender woman in Florida, offered an illustration of this sentiment when she told Human Rights Watch: “Nobody will go to the police because they assume that because we’re trans we’re lying to them.”[175]
In some instances, police violence and harassment can be attitudinal. Naomi Green, a transgender advocate in Texas, pointed out that “just like in society, when people are attacking trans people, some of these are the same people who wear these badges.... They have the same opinions or views whether they’re off the job or at work.”[176]
And the rest of these "New Actions" is more empty-handed bullshit. "Provide access to." "Propose rules for." "Provide training to." "Appoint coordinator for." It's all fucking nothing!
You know what Biden could do right now? That is completely within his power to do as POTUS? He can direct the Pentagon to start closing and relocating military bases.
Texas is home to 15 active military bases, including six active Air Force bases and three naval air stations. These operations contributed at least $114.1 billion to the Texas economy in 2021 and are a testament to Texas’ vital role in the country’s aerospace and defense initiatives.
The president doesn't need congressional approval to close a military base. Technically, all the DOD has to do is inform congress that it's doing so. So if Biden really, actually gave a shit about fighting stuff like Texas's anti-trans, anti-drag, anti-abortion regulation, he'd call up the governor of Texas and say, okay, here's the deal Jack: for every one of these bills you pass, I close a military base in Texas and I move it somewhere else.
That is the kind of shit you threaten to do when you're serious about "protecting LGBTQI+ communities." You use the power you have to play hard ball. "Frustrating when people think presidents are all-powerful." Hurr durr. Give me a fucking break. The executive branch has tremendous power, but the Democratic Party refuses to use it because
THE LIVES OF LGBT PEOPLE DON'T FUCKING MATTER TO THEM. YOU BEING IN DANGER IS THE ONLY PLANK IN THEIR PLATFORM, AND ACTUALLY PROTECTING YOU MEANS THAT THEY HAVE LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE TO RUN ON.
reminder that it doesn’t matter how trivial or silly your reason to hold on and keep going is. It’s still valid and important , and I’m happy you’re still here.
i love to take frozen french fries out of the bag and eat them like that.
pros: - something in my mouth - get to enjoy the act of eating something while i wait for the oven to preheat - they still taste good because they are precooked and seasoned fries - they're cold which is nice in the summer cons: - i need to let it kind of sit in my mouth for like 10 seconds before it becomes capable of being chewed on - every frozen fry i eat is a fry i won't get to eat when they're cooked - they're cold which is bad in the winter
you hate me
everyone on this website wants me dead in the dirt.
Between the barbenheimer shit and the grimace shake tiktok trend (e.g., social media users creating organic viral marketing for these products), I don’t think most people hate corporations nearly enough
This kind of thing where people promote products for free is a corporate wet dream btw. Word-of-mouth (and the memes have the same impact as traditional word-of-mouth) is more convincing to consumers than actual ads, and the corporation doesn’t have to pay for it. Everyone making Barbie memes and shit is doing Warner Bros’s job for them!!!
