Yes obviously all of them, but which of these chaps your ass the MOST?
this is absolutely fucking pathetic now every single fucking streaming service is gonna start doing this shit. all y'all had to do was not watch Netflix and let it flop for a few months and they would have given up
Y'all still actually watch netflix?
i know it's easier to see a headline and get angry about it online than it is to look into the source, but if we all did a little digging, it's evident that this is misinformation. the source is a blog post from a tech startup that is advertising their data analysis services to other streaming companies. the spike in subscribers (which lasted for two days) occurred over a four day period, of which, only the 26th and 27th of may had above average signups, the previous two days were under 50k signups per day.
what their data (purposely) fails to show is the sharp decline in signups between the 27th of may and the first of june, the day that these features rolled out, because their chart cuts off before the password sharing crackdown even went into effect. their data also does not count the number of cancelled subscriptions, and does not distinguish between free trial sign ups and paid subscription sign ups.
they are trying to make netflix look good to advertise their services. this is marketing, not actual data analysis.
been stuck with a terrible feeling that one of the episodes in the new black mirror season is gonna end with a title card like "the program you just watched was written by artificial intelligence" and they're going to be so smug about it and we'll all have to talk about it for weeks
oh hey apollo
lol
Taking a few commissions real quick ^^
actually im just gonna make my own post about it: please read more webcomics. please try them. every time people make posts about “aw man i wish SOMEone would WRITE about FLAVOR OF QUEER THING/TRAUMA OR ABUSE BUT IN SPECIFIC WAYS I CAN RELATE TO/WHATEVER” and then it gets reblogged into a giant thread of people agreeing with it and demanding Content i die because whatever it is is definitely being painstakingly created by an indie author who would really like for people to consume it and every time i point this out people suddenly can’t read lmao
it is out there it is free it is being made from firsthand experiences by people who care very very deeply who would be DELIGHTED to hear that it’s resonating with anybody at all, please throw some of that enthusiasm and support at people who will actually appreciate it
if you’re an indie comic person and any of this applies to you i encourage you to reblog this with a link to your comic and a short synopsis so people can browse the notes and find shit they’re looking for. or make your own post on your own blog if you don’t want to fool with other people i don’t care this is a sign from the universe that you should be louder about what you’re working on because people can’t fucking find it apparently.
i’ll go first i make kidd commander and it’s about an ensemble cast of queers on their way to kill god, they live on an airship and they’re all too pissed off to die. it’s free to read and it’s in the middle of its third arc right now. it lives here http://kiddcommander.com/
go go go
on second thought gonna add if you’re a READER and you’ve had Feelings about a webcomic feel free to recommend it here too
In addition to Kidd Commander, I enjoy:
Dumbing of Age - semi-autobiographical webcomic by an ex-Christian fundamentalist; explores a wide bevy of social justice issues in more nuanced ways than I often see, especially in regards to abuse
Monster Pulse - A group of kids (some of them explicitly queer) have their body parts turn into monsters; great analyses of trauma and transhumanism
Leftover Soup - slice-of-life story about the most philosophically inclined 20somethings in the world, seriously they spiral off into fascinating discussions all the time, this is basically Having Difficult Conversations: The Webcomic; the opening is terrible but stick with it
Forward - I’m just gonna link to the author’s artist’s statement and you can decide for yourself if it’s for you
i follow a lot of podcasts, i can put together a curated list.
http://ohumanstar.com/ is incredible, it’s about trans robots (in minneapolis! not a huge plot point, but it’s where i’m from). it finished recently, so you can have a completed reading experience.
https://www.baldwinpage.com/spacetrawler/2010/01/01/spacetrawler-4/ spacetrawler started as the story of six humans kidnapped by an incompetent alien to help free the eebs, an enslaved alien race. it’s very good, sometimes it hits very hard. the first and second series are complete, the third series is updating currently.
http://www.rice-boy.com/see/ rice boy is a “brightly colored and surreal fantasy adventure story”. bittersweet chosen one stuff. also by the same author is the order of tales (completed) and vattu (on going, i think it’s near completion)
https://www.egscomics.com/ very queer cast of magical teens. starts out very rough, but that was 19 years ago. lots of gender transformation magic and magical hijinks, with a helping of tragic backstories and nerd stuff.
https://www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1 about a couple of weird magic british school children at a weird british boarding school. there are a couple chapters in particular that hit hard. also, it’s just very well drawn and written and it always updates MWF, which is more than most webcomics can say.
http://diggercomic.com/ digger is just a good comic, i should reread it again, it’s been awhile. it’s about a “take-no-nonsense” wombat who finds herself dealing with a talking buddha statue, a tribe of the best anthropomorphic hyenas you’ll see, and a dead god.
boy have i got good news for YOU
the good news is that on this list (to my limited knowledge) both my comic and gunnerkrigg court feature wlw protagonists!
the other good news is there are TONS of us working outside the aggregate sites, please please don’t assume those companies are indicative of everything going on in webcomics as a genre. my thoughts on that could fill a whole other post but i wanted to bring it up here at least.
I also just remembered there’s the website https://archivebinge.com , which is FANTASTIC if you’re looking for something specific. It’s limited by the fact that the creator needs to post the comic themself, but it’s got a great tagging system for both genres and content warnings:
and lets you know when new posts go up even on independent sites! Extremely useful for finding and reading a bunch of comics without taking agency from the creators.
i read a shitton of webcomics but here are my recs specifically for ones that aren’t on networks like hiveworks so they need more love (on mobile so sorry if formatting gets weird)
Softies i can’t summarize better than page one sorry. there’s a bit about a stubbed toe that will hit you like a freight train to the feels.
Job Satisfaction is slice of life about queers and demons and queer demons.
Radio Silence is a coming of age story about a British band on tour.
Ingress Adventuring Company is about Professor Toivo Kissa. He is an elf and he goes on adventures instead of doing his job, which is professoring.
Skin Deep is about a girl who goes to college and finds out she’s a sphinx (i feel like everyone reads skin deep but also not enough people read skin deep).
Sfeer Theory has a magical university for a very complicated magic system, if you’re into Lore.
Outliers takes place in a superhero world but these boys are just trying to be happily married in peace.
Some LGBT webcomics just off the top of my head
Muted - fantasy comic about a gay, poly witch in New Orleans.
Paranatural - All ages fantasy comic about middle schoolers who fight ghosts.
2 Slices - Classic, trope-y romance comic with a queer spin
Alice and the nighmare - Fantasy/sci-fi retelling of Alice in Wonderland.
Sleepless Domain - Magical Girl genre deconstruction. In a mysterious fantasy/sci-fi world where teenage girls sometimes have superpowers, how are those girls treated and valued? Content warning: This comic is usually pretty cute but has some serious violence early on.
Chaos Life - autobiographical slice-of-life comics about an agender illistrator and their gay, disabled wife.
Boy In Pink Earmuffs - All ages comic about two best friends who solve mysteries together and are also crushing on eachother.
Magical Boy - Fantasy comic about a trans boy who finds out he’s descended from a long line of magical girls and is destined to save the world. (tapas exclusive)
what’s up if you’re in the notes looking for recs you can’t see most of them because tumblr hides anything with a link in it, view this reblog to see a big ol’ list of webcomic links
tiger tiger is so gorgeous and funny! a girl steals her twin brother’s identity and jaunts off with his ship to study sea sponges. really amazing.
skinhorse it’s been a long time since i caught up but i’ve admired garrity since i was reading narbonic in middle school. skinhorse is about a government department full of weirdos that tries to regulate nonhuman intelligences and it’s also just very funny and cute.
kill six billion demons is extremely dense, extremely gorgeous. a woman wakes up in hell with a magic thingy in her forehead and it only gets weirder from there.
Do you want ass kicking nuns? Do you want badass witches? Do you want every single person in the webcomic you’re reading to be queer?
Then you want to read Sister Claire by @yamino!
I don’t even remember when/where I picked up this webcomic but it’s been going for YEARS now, and I have loved every single thing the artist has ever done.
Aside from the main webcomic (updated twice weekly I think?), there are the missing moments, short stories about the world and characters that fill in a TON of lore and are well worth a read.
Yamino has also done some zines about elastigirl and stratogale that have changed the canon of the incredibles for me, not to mention the awesome sailor moon polycule content on patreon.
My runner up suggestion is Questionable Content by Jeph. It’s a little slow to get started and there’s a LOT to catch up on, but it’s updated every weekday and it just gets queerer and queerer as time goes on. Also quirky robots (seriously Melon is my absolute fave).
Webcomics of every flavour? Well then:
Webcomic Library is a tagged archive of webcomics curated by the wonderful Luma: if you are looking specifically for a certain theme or group or even language then the archive here is a very good place to look.
Spiderforest webcomic collective also has tagged comics in their archive, as well as a wide collection of genres and story types i can recommend from a diverse range or creators.
Hiveworks is a webcomic publisher who also has a selection of diverse genres and comics that are easy to browse on their site.
There are other collectives too that showcase comics of every type and skill level, such as Aradia for magical people genre! There’s gonna be so many more but I have limited time but they’re out there!!!!!!!
——
Some webcomic sites also have “recommend” or webring sections that can be good for finding new comics - it’s not as immediately convenient as clicking on webtoons or Tapas BUT the thrill of finding comics that creators like and hopping from site to site from any given year and not just “most popular” is a distilled webcomic experience that i do recommend if you give it the time.
When people say “I wish i could read” - I also extend it to “I wish i could make” people out there: If big webcomic hosts keep pushing the Hot Trend your way and you don’t think you can “compete” then DON’T COMPETE. Have fun! Say your piece! Make your weird story! Learn and grow from it!
(There are lots of resources out there to help you start, from tutorials, studying and even podcasts like Screentones that offer advice)
—— I make a long form Slice of life/drama webcomic about working retail called Honestly not a Robot because i found so very very few in the niche and those who did weren’t quite vibing with me. (no offense! We are all different in how we tell stories!)
So I made it for myself and everyone else who may want to feel emotions about it with me. It may not “trendy” and extremely niche in some ways but the it’s there for the one or two people who may need it.
(I also need to vent about mundane things like ticket descriptions and handsets sometimes, it’s just how it is. Webcomics are pretty good spot for expressing that lol)
Some of my own webcomic recommendations can be found here!
Happy exploring! Hope it inspires people to create and read more webcomics!!!
Very Brief Guide to [tumblr], for Reddit refugees
Shit You Must Do Right Fucking Now:
- Change your profile picture, blog header, and title to something other than the defaults. Do it right now. You will be mistaken for a bot otherwise, and blocked.
- Go into Settings -> Dashboard, scroll down to Preferences, and turn off the options in the picture. This will get rid of most of the algorithmic stuff.
- Turn off Tumblr Live. You have to snooze it once every 7 days for some stupid reason. It's hosted through another company and will steal your data if you use it.
- Go to your blog settings (under the little person menu) and turn off these two settings:
- Turn off infinite scroll (lags the site) and turn on timestamps on posts, in the same menu as Preferences.
Basic Features of the Site:
- Reblogs drive the entire site. If you'd upvote something on Reddit, you'd reblog it on Tumblr. You can add text, images, or tags to a reblog, but you're not required to.
- The dashboard is the equivalent to your Reddit feed, and contains the posts of all the people you follow, with the newest at the top
- You can send an ask to someone, and it'll appear in their askbox for them to answer. You can receive them too, or turn off the settings if you don't want.
- Tags aren't actually used for finding stuff (search function is dogshit), but are more for categorizing. People also talk in tags. Because Tumblr is weird, you can't use quotation marks (") or commas in them without fucking it up
- You can filter both tags and phrases under Account Settings; doing this will put a filter over a post that contains them, which you'll have to click through to see the post itself. Useful for avoiding hate speech or blocking out annoying stuff
- You can make polls in posts. Here's one now.
- Likes are useless. They literally do fuck-all except send a notification to the OP.
Stuff Tumblr Does That Other Sites Don't:
- Very old posts (I'm talking from like 2012) often circulate on this site. There's no such thing as a post being "too old" to reblog
- Blocking is highly encouraged; you can block someone for any reason. Even for just being annoying.
- If you and someone else are following each other, you are mutuals. Mutuals are fucking awesome and are treasured like friends. Mutuals are a thing on other sites but Tumblr treats em differently.
- You can screenshot someone's tags if you like them and add them to a reblog. This is called "peer review"
- Sometimes someone will find a blog and go through it and like/reblog a bunch of posts. This is totally fine and not "creepy" like it is seen as on other sites.
- Tumblr jokes often rely on Continuing The Bit and a "yes, and?" attitude. Goncharov is probably the best example of this.
- We are fucking infested with bots. They will either have totally blank profiles or be filled with porn. Block and report on sight.
- Censorship is pretty lax here. I can say "I want to brutally stab Elon Musk to death and watch him bleed out in front of a crowd" and nobody gives a shit.
General Etiquette:
- Don't try to do epic clapbacks here, you'll probably just get laughed at or blocked. If someone is bugging you or spouting bigoted bullshit, block them.
- Reblog art!!! Artists often struggle to gain traction on here; reblogging will give them a boost.
- Not every reblog needs a comment or tag in it
- You can go all out with tagging your stuff to organize it, or you can just leave it all blank. Someone might ask "hey, can you tag these posts as [x]?" and you can decide if you want to do that or not. It's generally polite to oblige, but "no" is still reasonable.
- Avoid discourse like the plague. Filter it, block people who start it, scroll past it when you see it. Just don't get involved in it. Ever.
- Don't put fandom tags or jokes on someone's posts about serious matters or personal shit
- You're responsible for curating your own dashboard; if you complain about constantly seeing stuff you don't like, that's probably on you. Don't be afraid to unfollow.
- Follower count doesn't matter much here and you don't have to make yours known if you don't want to.
- Reblog, don't repost. Reblogging keeps the credit and doesn't "steal" engagement like Twitter retweets.
- If someone likes something a LOT, they might reblog it like 30 times in a row. This is normal
- Having a post blow up is actually kinda a bad thing, since it floods your notifications. There's a sort of in-joke about how having a big post is awful and people jokingly try to stop their own posts from blowing up, often in vain.
Tips:
- Get XKit Rewritten if you're on desktop, it's a really helpful extension
- In the little drop-down menu next to the 'Post now' button you can either save a draft, schedule a post, or add it to your queue. The queue lets you post things in order at a certain interval, which you can change. It's good for spreading stuff out over time.
- You can use Shift+R to quickly reblog stuff and Shift+Q to queue!
- Filter your notifications under Activity - you can also see some neat graphs
- Find each other! If you want your old Reddit communities to stick together, seek out other refugees and follow them.
Have fun on [tumblr], everyone!
[Key to the Future’s Fate is currently on HIATUS. The story will return with CHAPTER 3 on AUGUST 24TH. In the meantime, please enjoy this CONCEPT ART for the series!]
It doesn't read very well, in hindsight, but I LOVE the top sketch. It gives a view as Leon and Luca walk along one of the tree platforms and looks over to the Fair at the center. By this point, I was also starting to get into the idea of making the Fair multiple floors... but still struggled with what to make it /look like./ I tried a few different looks, but none of these particular ones would stick.
I also started to play around with color for the Fair here! At this point, I only intended it to have one or two major colors, though of course that would change down the line...
sometimes I randomly think about the time a girl posted in this girls only Facebook group I’m in telling everyone how she broke up with her boyfriend and he lied saying that he lost the spare key she gave him, only to then break into her apartment when she wasn’t home and steal the cat they’d adopted while they were together, but then he denied having done this and she didn’t really have proof that he took the cat since he wouldn’t let her come into his place and look for it. And then another girl saw this post and knew her ex-boyfriend, and she was like “girl. I used to hook up with your mans back in xxxx and I still have his number. If you want, I’ll hit him up and get him to invite me back to his place and see if your cat’s there.” And the OP was like “bet.”
So this woman hit up homie dog, asked him out for drinks, went home with him, slept with him, and then woke up in the middle of the night and TOOK THE CAT. Like she had only said that she would confirm if the cat was there but then she took it upon herself to steal this woman’s cat back. Like she full on Trojan horsed this man and then hit up homegirl like “I got the goods. Where you wanna meet.” And then the two of them posted a photo of them together with the cat to the group.
And I just think women supporting women is so beautiful.
