Doonagore Castle, Ireland

Doonagore Castle is Doolin’s iconic tower house castle on the hill just behind Sea View House overlooking Doolin Point. It is a round 16th-century tower house with a small walled enclosure located about 1 km above the village of Doolin. The castle was built around 1500 although an earlier castle stood on the site since the 1300s. It was built by Teige MacTurlough O’Conner and was in possession of Sir Turlough O’Brien in 1584.

Castle Stalker, Scotland

Castle Stalker sits surrounded by water at the mouth of Loch Laich on a rock known as Rock of the Cormorants. By car it's on the A828 18 miles from Oban and 23 miles from Fort William. Castle Stalker derives its name from the gaelic stalcaire which translates as falconer or hunter. The castle has a long and turbulent history. Originally built as a fortalice (a small defendable fort) by the MacDougalls, (See Dunollie & Dunstaffnage pages) in the early 14th century around 1320 when they were Lords of Lorn.

In 1489, François de Caumont, Lord of Castelnaud, a fortress a little further along the valley, built the Milandes castle, at his wife, Claude De Cardaillac’s request as she was depressed by the austere atmosphere of the Castelnaud castle. Les Milandes, or Mirandes as it used to be pronounced referring to its site which has a delightful view over the valley, was thus used as the permanent, and preferred, residence of the De Caumont family until 1535, at which time it became their second home, due, mainly to the fact that they were spending more and more time at the Court of Versailles.

"Roche Goyon" draws its name from one of the oldest Breton Families. According to a legend, a Goyon under Alain Barbe-Torte would have built a former castle in 937.

Hrad Zvíkov, Česká republika

(Zvíkov Castle, Czech Republic)

The history of Zvíkov Castle began with the royal house of Přemyslovec. Zvíkov is an outstanding example of Czech medieval secular architecture. The initial construction of Zvíkov took place during the rule of Wenceslas I (1230 - 1253). Written records mention Konrad, founder of the Lords of Janovice, as burgrave of the castle in 1234. Zvíkov was a favorite of King Wenceslas I, who often stayed here.

Castle Campbell, Scotland

The oldest part of the stone castle was built in the early 15th century. At that time it was called ‘Castle Glume’. Around 1465 it passed through marriage to Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll. This powerful Highland chief needed a secure but impressive Lowland seat at the heart of the realm, within easy reach of the main centres of the royal court. Castle Glume fitted the bill perfectly. In 1489, the earl changed the name to Castle Campbell.

High Gothic castle founded in 1348, which has a unique position among Czech castles. It was built by Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV as a place for safekeeping of the royal treasures, especially Charles's collection of holy relics and the coronation jewels of the Roman Empire.

Burg Meersburg, also known as the Alte Burg (English: Old Castle), in Meersburg on Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg is the oldest inhabited castle in Germany. The central tower was first built during the 7th century, though the original structure is no longer visible. Burg Meersburg is known as the old castle, in the reference to the neighboring 18th century New Castle.

Örebro slott, Sverige

Örebro Castle is a medieval castle fortification in Örebro, Närke, Sweden. It was expanded during the reign of the royal family Vasa (House of Vasa) and finally rebuilt about 1900. The castle lies on an island in river Svartån. For over 700 years Örebro Castle has kept a watchful eye on everyone crossing the bridge on the River Svartån. The oldest part of the castle, a defence tower, was erected in the latter half of the 13th century.

Rocca Roveresca di Senigallia, Italia

Bojnický zámok, Slovenská republika

(Bojnice Castle, Slovakia)

Bojnice Castle belongs to the oldest and most important memorials in Slovakia. It stands on a travertine hill over the town. The first written record of the existence of the castle comes from 1113 in the writ of Zobor Abbey. It was originally a wooden castle developed from an older rampart. It was gradually built up from stone as the property of the Poznan family in the 13th century.

Spišský hrad, Slovensko

More than 800 years ago the monumentous stone castle had started to rear up imperiously about the sea level of 634 metres. In year the 1780 a great fire undewrote its final indelibe demolition. The castle ruins together with unique environs of Spis territory is since 1993 registered in UNESCO’s World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.

Janův hrad, Česká republika

(John's Castle, Czech Republic)

John's Castle is a romantic castle, which rises in the mysterious atmosphere of the incredibly beautiful park glaciers in the Czech Republic. The glaciers are located in the South Moravian region of the Republic, where you can still visit the castle itself. The glaciers enter into the composition of the complex cultural and natural glacier-Valtitse (Lednice-Valtice). Since 1996 it has been listed as World Heritage by UNESCO.

Founded by the lords of Tinténiac, probably in XIe century, and rebuilt in XIVe century, the castle of Montmuran, which enjoys a splendid prospect on the surrounding countryside, draws up itself at the end of an alley of honor. The access to the castle is done by a châtelet of XIVe century, preceded by a drawbridge and framed of two grosses round towers to machicolation. The vault dates from the same time.

A magnificent stronghold that rises in the middle of Lake Toblino. It is Trentino's most famous castle. It's fame is due to its fantastic location and the beautiful landscape it is set in, as well as to the many dark legends that have stemmed from those walls and that park.
