reze was often out doing her job, which you obviously knew was extremely dangerous given that she was the bomb devil hybrid. that also meant she wasn't around a lot, and that left you alone most of the time, stuck in a worried state of if reze would even come back alive or come back at all, but she never knew these things. when she was on a mission, the only thing on her mind was the mission, and she wouldn't even think about you and how it would effect you if she did end up dying. that's just how she was and how much she cared about the missions she was given.
it was another day when reze was gone on a mission, and she had told you that it was probably going to take a while for her to get back which she never told you, and it only fueled your worry because she would never say how long it would take.
you sat on the couch of the apartment you and reze shared, watching the news when you were about to change the channel they started to report a chainsaw man devil fighting a...bomb devil. your eyes immediately widened when you realized that it was reze fighting another hybrid and soon enough the station stopped when the camera stopped recording and stopped entirely. you didn't even care, though. not about the tv at least, but instead about reze and how she was fighting another devil and how injured she could possibly get.
you heard keys outside of your door as they slid into the lock and the door opened, revealing reze with multiple cuts and bruises scattered across her body. you shot up off of the couch and rushed to the front door and caught the girl when she started to collapse to the ground. "are you okay? come on, we need to get you cleaned up." you said to her as you wrapped your arm around her waist and her arm around your shoulder and started to lead her into the bathroom.
once reaching the bathroom, you lifted reze up and sat her down on the counter before you grabbed the first aid kit and set it beside you. reze didn't speak the whole time you were fixing her up, only sucking in a deep breath whenever she was in pain and letting out a tiny "ow" every now and then. when you were finished, you looked at the girl in front of you as she stared back at you, as if she was waiting for you to say something and when you didn't, she did.
"i'm sorry about this happening." reze said quietly, her eyes averting from yours.
"it's okay. i know how dangerous your job is, so i won't pry or anything. but...i just wish you would tell me when it's a mission like this, one where you're fighting another devil hybrid. because i never know if...if you'll come back or not." you responded, your voice getting quieter and quieter the more you spoke.
reze's eyes went back to yours, and she felt a sudden shot of pain in her heart, a thing she hadn't felt ever before. she could see in your eyes how upset you were about this, and she never had realized before this how her own actions were causing this. she was so used to faking feelings and everything that she forgot that these feelings were real, and that it wasn't for a mission, but instead for real love. her hands cupped your face and leaned forward, placing a kiss onto your lips. usually the kisses between you two were quick and didn’t have much thought put into it, but this time was different, and it startled you for a moment. the way reze was kissing you now was slow and loving, as if she were giving you her whole heart into a kiss. even she was surprised at how she was doing this, having never felt such strong emotions for someone before and not knowing how to deal with it. but she now realized that she really did love you.
when reze pulled back from you, there was a smile present on her face as she looked at you with such love and adoration that you had never seen before from her. her hands were still cupping your face as she began to speak, “you’ve always felt like home, i just never realized until now, but i love you so much.”
a smile grew on your own lips as you have never heard her even say anything close to that ever before. you were always worried that what she felt for you wasn’t even real, after her having to fake it so many times. but it was confirmed now. she did love you, more than she could ever imagine. “i love you too, reze.”
the girl’s smile grew wider as she pulled you in for another kiss, one just as loving and passionate, but quick, and she then started kissing you all over your face as she kept muttering out “i love you” over and over again. at least she finally found a way to express her love, right?

Splatoon has always been an invitation for self expression, no matter if it fits gender norms or not. The players forge their own safe space where they're happy to exist. But what's important to mention is that even in-game, characters are inviting you to be different, to be you.
I'd say that the squid sisters are pretty "basic" in a sense that they were meant to portray japanese idols. They're meant to be perfect and act perfectly, in a sense. But despite that, there's a little detail that stands out. One that shows that the girls are imperfect. Marie's smile.
A lot of people mistake it for a smirk. But it's not. Marie's smile always looks like that. It's crooked. Despite how perfect she is, Marie's smile is always a little bent. And NO ONE ever comments on it in-game. It's a part of her that just defines her as someone different, as unique. And to me that was just the beginning of Splatoon making their idols stand out
Pearl and Marina stand out in all possible ways. But that makes them welcoming. I've seen many cishet people first react to pearl with disgust, saying that her design was ugly, that her huge forehead was a bad design choice ... But all of the LGBTQ people I've seen love her. Why ? Because she doesn't look conventionally attractive. Because she's surprising. Because she wants to be something that doesn't fit other's vision of "looking good". You like pearl because she's unique.
Even outside of that, Pearl and Marina stand out as comforting because of their relationship. They're gay, of course. Having lesbian idols really helped to make it a safe space for LGBTQ youth. But even outside of that the bond between Pearl and Marina is all about unconditional love. Marina was outed to be an octarian and Pearl's first reaction was to reassure her that this didn't change her opinion of marina in the slightest, that she felt sorry about learning that against her will and that she loved her anyways. Now imagine her learning by accident that someone's gay. I'm willing to bet she would have the EXACT SAME reaction. It's deeply comforting to know that this character you love so much would support you. Pearl was even revealed to be punk when she was younger and punks culture at its core is all about acceptance and fighting for other's rights.
And finally, you have deep cut.
Deep cut is all about embracing your culture and sharing it with others. And remember how much people criticized Pearl for her huge forehead ? Well the Splatoon team looked at these reviews, smiled, said "fuck you" and gave us an even BIGGER forehead for Frye. BECAUSE SPLATOON IDOLS DON'T NEED TO LOOK CONVENTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE. As for shiver, she wears a sarashi, a cloth that is most often worn by Sukebans, a type of very violent feminine delinquent in Japan. It used to be worn by samurais and has been claimed by these women as a way to show off their masculinity and their power. Therefore, Shiver is made to be gender non-conforming and to defy the rules, so much that many thought she could've been non-binary at first. As for big man ... Everyone wanted a sexy first male idol. We got a goofy and adorable pancake. Once again, Splatoon just wants to have fun with its representation.
Splatsville is the city of Chaos. Here, bigots get banned, but LGBTQ folks thrive. It's a place that grew out of the wish to see this world constantly evolving and keep getting better. It's a place meant to change with its players. And if we keep making it queer and accepting, this world can only grow up to be more and more like that.
