I don't know if this blog is still active, but I was wondering if there are sounds Cardassians have problems making when learning other languages? Or rather, are there letters/sounds that simply don't exist in Kardasi? Sorry if this has already been asked...
Yup, this blog is still active, if slow. Having two jobs, mental health issues, and a cat with multiple health problems to look after tends to do that.
There are quite a few sounds that a Cardassian would have to put in special effort to learn, even looking at it from the perspective of a Cardassian learning English. Non-rolled Rs, a number of short vowels (a in cat, e in bet and i in sick), J as in joke, some varieties of Ls in English (such as the “dark” L in the word “bottle” in some dialects), and the TH that occurs in “these” (Kardasi only has the TH that occurs in “with”). Consonant clusters would also be a headache, as in Kardasi each consonant is pronounced individually. Getting a Cardassian to say the word “singing” would be quite the experience for both of you!
Then, of course, there are all those sounds that exist in neither Kardasi nor most dialects of English--the Japanese R, the Welsh Ll (although to be fair the sound would be MUCH easier for a Cardassian to manage than a native English speaker!), the French U in words like “lune” or, in German, “über”.... Standard Kardasi really does use a very limited set of sounds compared to many languages on Earth.
So yes, there you are!
