“I’ll pay you $150K a year. Sit in this room and wait for the phone to ring. What ever you do, DO NOT miss that phone call.” Bored to death, after 10 years, that shiny black landline in the corner of the room has never once rang. One day, it starts ringing. You miss it by a second.
The shadows stretched out longer and longer, then the lights flickered out and he was left in a seemingly infinite black void. He heard music playing in the distance. He started walking through the darkness guided only by the sound of a song. He stepped nervously forward, following it in the maddening seemingly endless darkness. eventually he started to feel resistance against his skin. It was cold and eventually it started to feel like he was walking on the bottom of the ocean. He jumped forward and floated gently through the inky black until he finally saw a light.
His head pushed through to the air. He found himself in a room he recognized all to well. He found himself eagerly looking at a boy. As if by magic he felt the words escape his lips. “I’ll pay you $150K a year. Sit in this room and wait for the phone to ring. What ever you do, DO NOT miss that phone call.”
Why did he say it? Why? That phrase that echoed in his mind for years escaped his lips. He left the boy in the room. The man who’d initially said it appeared in front of him.
“You failed your task, now you must find the other phone. If he answers the call you’ll be freed from this place if not you’ll be locked here for a thousand years.” the man frowned and turned into dust.
