Snape & 🪻

Commissioned artwork by @fresiants.

This is my first time painting a young Severus Snape from his student days! I throughly enjoyed creating this piece☺️

I referenced the Herbology Greenhouse from Hogwarts Legacy for the background. The idea of the lovely purple hyacinths was suggested by @fresiants.

"Few photographs of Snape during his school days have been preserved. In one of the rare old photos that remains, the slender, black-haired young man appears to be oblivious to the camera, focusing intently on a hyacinth during herbology class. The identity of the photographer remains a mystery to this day. ”

Okay, this little backstory is actually something I just concocted🤣

Given the candid-like perspective of this drawing, I decided to add a vintage photo effect. I personally quite like this version!

I feel like us Snape fans all relate to being that misunderstood, lonely character just trying to fix their mistakes. The amount of posts I've seen of people wanting to "help" him and discussing the love and support they would give him just makes me think maybe that's really what they need. Just for someone to listen, not judge too quickly and to give them the love they deserve. And I'm absolutely guilty of this myself.

So, I think we should all bare that in mind within the community. Just like no one knew what Severus had been though and we wish someone had been that shoulder for him. We have the opportunity to be that for others in the fandom. We all have a sad story just like Snape. Which is why I think sometimes we all need to remember that the love we want to show Severus we deserve ourselves.

“DON’T–” screamed Snape, and his face was suddenly demented, inhuman, as though he was in as much pain as the yelping, howling dog stuck in the burning house behind them–“CALL ME COWARD!” Jumping on the train of doing this scene in my style ‘cause why not

Well shit, Henry Jenkins, out here in 1997 dropping truth bombs

Oh hey I need this for a research paper I'm writing, thank you!

i mean he had been out here since 1988 dropping such bombs:

"'fandom' is a vehicle of marginalized subcultural groups (women, the young, gays, etc.) to pry open space for their cultural concerns within dominant representations; it is a way of appropriating media texts and rereading them in a way that serves different interests, a way of transforming mass culture into a popular culture"

Jenkins, Henry. “Star Trek Rerun, Reread, Rewritten: Fan Writing as Textual Poaching.” Critical Studies in Mass Communication 5, no. 2 (1988): 85–107. https://doi.org/10.1080/15295038809366691.

there are even some earlier works in fan studies but that’s what i have ready to hand.

Don’t get attached to unpopular ships because you will run out of fic and die

Alternatively: create the content and become adored by like 3 people forever

Or a secret third thing: passionately create content for your unhinged pool noodle of a ship until those three people can’t help but also create something and then live forever on your happy raft of cringey little friends.
