The fact that anti-abortion laws and anti-transgender laws are both being implemented en masse, at the *same* time, by the *same* people (who, it hardly needs to be remarked, are overwhelmingly neither women nor transgender) should be enough to convince any reasonable person that the narrative of conflict between and women's and transgender is, first and foremost, a divide-and-conquer strategy by the far right.

Your survival is our survival. Our survival is your survival. Anyone who says different is a fed.

I think there’s quite a big difference between a woman getting an abortion and a teenage girl being sterilised and having a double mastectomy.

Women’s rights and trans issues are not comparable and are often in opposition.

Fuck off, Collaborator.

It's interesting that there are people that understand that the right lies constantly about abortion but think they tell the truth about trans people.

Also, hey, let's walk with this totally bad faith argument for a second. What IS different about a teen girl choosing to get an abortion, and a teen girl choosing to get a tubal ligation and a mastectomy? Are you saying that teenage girls who know that they will never want children should be forced to preserve their fertility anyway? Are you saying that teenage girls with severe back pain or the BRCA gene need to preserve their feminine breasts and be aesthetically pleasing to others, even at the expense of their own health? I mean, they're just too young to be making medical decisions which might make them less fertile or sexual desirable, right? What if they regret it???

And hey, you know, the same worry that teen girls might regret these things is true for adult women, too. Maybe we should make them wait until they're married, in case their future husband disapproves. Maybe we should make them wait until they've had kids - what if she regrets it and wants children? what if she regrets it and wants to breast feed? what if her stupid little woman brain hasn't thought this through and correctly pinned her entire self-worth and value as a person on her ability to act as a sex object and baby incubator? what then???

Trans men aren't women, and infantilizing them as poor helpless girls is obviously transphobic. But in addition to that, even if we were to buy into the central transphobic premise here, the conclusions would still be sexist as hell. Let's say that there are no trans men. Let's pretend for the sake of argument that trans men simply don't exist. Infantilizing teen girls out of being able to make their own medical decisions isn't feminist either.

If you're categorically against teen girls being able to choose to get a tubal ligation and a mastectomy, I have an awful lot of trouble believing that you're actually pro-choice. Pro-choice doesn't mean "women should have bodily autonomy just as long as they do the things I want". Pro-choice means pro-fucking-choice. You can't sing female empowerment and bodily autonomy out of one side of your mouth, while sticking your tongue out to lick the boot of the patriarchy on the other.

Let’s also note here that by “teen girl” they mean “eighteen or nineteen years old”.  Or in other words: legally adult, and therefore (supposedly) allowed to make their own choices about their own bodies.

Trans people are people and deserve human rights. But also this is the same fight! I am a cis woman who never intends to use my uterus. They want to define everyone by their body parts. I am not a breeding mare and I want other people to have the same choice about their bodies (and who they are) that I should have!

I’m Listening to the Fucking Song!!!!!!!

Slap Shot-1977

Still, in my humble opinion, the greatest “Sports” movie in history. And I’m completely willing to drop the gloves and have a tilt, and or Donnybrook, over that statement anytime anybody wants to.

There are so many unintended consequences to well-intentioned actions. It feels like a game you can’t win.

#CHIDI WAS RIGHT

The Good Place really went with making their new Point ‘there is no ethical consumption under capitalism’ and I respect that

And then went on to say “blaming individuals for all of this is absurd and evil, as is locking them up for punishment instead of rehabilitation” and I respect that

Also, “consequentialism is a fundamentally flawed branch of ethics”

I know they're just trying to stop random idiots climbing on it, but the total lack of explanation makes this sounds like every government warning in a horror movie ever.

Can I watch a great film knowing the actresses in it were terrorized and mistreated the entire time? Can I watch a football game knowing that the players are getting brain injuries right before my eyes? Can I listen to my favorite albums anymore knowing that the singers were all beating their wives in between studio sessions? Can I eat at the new fancy taco place knowing when the building that used to be there got bulldozed eight families got kicked out of their homes so they could be replaced with condos and a chain restaurant? Can I wear the affordable clothes I bought downtown that were probably assembled in a sweatshop with child labor? Can I eat quinoa? Can I eat this burger? Can I drink this bottled water? Can I buy a car and drive to work because I’m sick of taking an hour each way on the subway? Whose bones do I stand on? Whose bones am I standing on right now?

On one hand, it’s a privilege to be able to choose to acknowledge these horrors or not–we’re going to acknowledge that privilege. On the other hand, I once attended a lecture by the explorerer-conservationist Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s daughter and son and they had a lot of opinions about what we could do to help the environment and the ocean and I talked about how in my country, we have to drink bottled water, because it’s a desert and there’s only salt water all around, but we’re contributing to pollution and all of these things…

And she looked at me and told me not to fall into the trap of “activist guilt.” I couldn’t remember the exact words, but, it was the first time I’d heard the term and it took a weight off my shoulders.

We do what we can. It’s so much better than giving up entirely or not doing anything at all because we can’t do it perfectly. It doesn’t benefit anyone in the end if we just sit around feeling guilty about every little thing in life. I’d just joined tumblr back then (haha, so like, eight or nine years ago at this point?), I was being exposed to way more than I’d ever been before (I was previously just into feminism and animal rights/wildlife conservation/environmentalism since I was a kid), and it was weighing on me.

As long as humans are humans and living flawed lives, many consumed by greed, there will not be anything in this world untouched by evil.

I usually avoid stuff that says it was made in China or other cheap looking knockoffs, out of fear of them being made in sweatshops (now, I know even a lot of big brands use those…), it’s exhausting. Then, I read something about how people who actually lived and worked in those would still buy this cheap stuff and how this shocked the foreigner reporting on it, but they just looked confused like, it’s what they can afford and them avoiding consuming it isn’t going to change the whole system from the ground-up.

… it went on about how “money talks” and choosing where to put your money still feeds the whole capitalist system and is nearly a way of comforting yourself, but you not buying doesn’t mean everyone else isn’t. What needs to be tackled is at a much higher level than any of us can reach.

Of course, I’d still, given the choice, give my money to companies I agree with and I’ll boycott what I know to support awful stuff, but I also feel no superiority over this and know now it’s not as black and white or easy as I thought it was.

This is the same reason that moral purity “you can’t enjoy [x] because it’s Problematic ™” is such nonsense, because nothing is pure. There’s something bad about everything if you dig deep enough. As long as we lived in flawed human societies we’ve got to make the best of what they offer us. If you have the choice and means, please, do support those who do good, but also, don’t beat yourself up over not living up to an unattainable ideal.

No one can. You’ll just make yourself so miserable, you either burn up and stop fighting entirely or you’ll make yourself a non-productive, depressed heap just out of a bleeding heart left unchecked. You can’t make a change to this world if you refuse to engage in it.

Purity is one of the worst, most harmful myths humans ever invented.

Rebloging for this amazing reply telling us how to actually handle this, because yeah, sometimes I’ll simply shut down trying to find something that doesn’t cause harm to anyone

i think about this one so fucking often i had to clip it

Avatar

that was like watching someone very skillfully assembling a stained-glass window just to watch someone else dropkick it

I can literally quote this clip word for word

so you’re telling me that “stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni” would be like saying “wrote a G on his belt and called it gucci”

that’s…a pretty good analogy actually

US moron came to town

Hunting for some coochie

Wrote a G up on his belt

And this bitch called it Gucci

Seeing my notifications get flooded with this every July 4th is the only thing I respect about America

Niezsche has some pretty hateful things to say as well. It is extremely hard to find a well-respected, long-revered philosopher who didn’t have horrible things to say about women. These men are considered geniuses, but never even bothered to question the gender norms and misogyny of their time. This isn't even touching on the horrible things Freud had to say about women.

I am sorry. I’m bashing Apple here. And for good reason.

This is a plea to my followers.

Stop buying Apple products. I know you’ve used them for most of your life, and I know it’s inconvenient to move to a new brand because in most cases, you cannot take your contacts with you on various chat apps.

I know this is inconvenient. I truly do.

But Apple is not the company it was before. There is now no difference between an Apple computer and a Windows computer in terms of graphic design. I know this for a fact. I had to use both in college 20 years ago, and non-apple computers are now generally better for design work than Apple computers.

Most non-apple companies encourage self-repair of your own devices, while Apple refuses it. I also know this for a fact, as I watched Apple computers become slowly less reparable through the late 90s and early 2000s. Where I was once able to do the repairs on our office computers, we had to start sending out our Apple devices because they started gluing things down on their logic boards. Notably the glue they used was not heat-resistant and led to device damage should the heat sink system fail. But they did this because they wanted to dig more money out of their customers.

Apple software is also designed to fail. I cannot believe people are still buying new devices after the scandal where Apple was slowing their phones in order to force people to purchase new versions.

Apple hardware is designed to become obsolete. Motherboards and logic boards are designed to hold exactly what comes attached to them and will fail if upgrade attempts are made.

Apple refuses to work with software developers despite promises of cross-compatibility. One of the very first coding problems I discovered was to discover a gigantic hole in a software program that made a plotter (giant printer) compatible with iOS. This caused a memory leak, leading to necessary resets of the computer after every 2 feet of printing.

I know that it’s not possible for most of you to just throw your devices away and buy a new one. I wouldn’t be able to do that, either. But eventually there will come a time when you have to upgrade, and I encourage you to take the plunge and purchase a non-apple device. I don’t even have a recommendation for you because literally anything is better than Apple. A rock that you write on is better than an Apple phone.

Unfortunately I expect to be shadow-banned on Apple devices because of this, and I’ll try to report on decreased activity as much as I can.

It’s time to stop trying to beg Apple to change. They won’t. It’s time now to just stop supporting Apple.

Stop wasting your money on easily broken garbage!

I have a perfectly working iPhone 6. I got it because the iphone 7 no longer has a headphone jack and requires you to buy Apple’s shitty bluetooth headphones. Last month Apple decided they will not be updating the iphone 6 to the new iOS… for no real reason. They wil still release bug fixes but are not releasing version 13 for iphone 6. ALL apps in the istore now require you to be on version 13 of the iOS to download the app. HOWEVER apps I’ve already installed and downloaded work perfectly. There is literally no reason for this other to encourage consumerism and to put my perfectly working phone into a landfill. I’m upgrading to Android as soon as I have the money. I’ve already switched from mac to windows after Apple wanted to charge me $2000 for a macbook with only 100gigs of RAM. That’s less than a fucking PS3. Apple Products are inherently awful, and there is literally no benefit to buying them whatsoever. Other than to look like a complete tool. Fuck Apple.

This is not hearsay. This is not rumour. Apple settles iphone slowdown case. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51706635 They really did deliberately sabotage their products to make people buy the latest ones.

All of this. Please read this and act accordingly. You will BENEFIT greatly from switching to other devices. It may not be possible right away, but as soon as you can buy something new, or would have to anyway, or can make a switch (e.g. with your phone provider), DO. You’ll have something better, more durable, more compatible, and definitely tons cheaper.

IIRC the most recent example of Apple’s us-and-the-rest attitude was their attempt to avoid standardising charger cables to USB-C, instead playing dog-in-the-manger on top of a heap of Lightning connectors.

In the EU at least, they’ve had to fall into line.

I know that it’s not possible for most of you to just throw your devices away and buy a new one.

I wouldn’t be able to do that, either.

But eventually there will come a time when you have to upgrade,

and I encourage you to take the plunge and purchase a non-apple device.

Every single cop show is like oh look how these cool badass protags just wanna do their job but the obnoxious pencil-pushers back at the office keep getting in the way by trying to make them follow due conduct and the very obvious criminal keeps maliciously obstructing them by invoking their legal rights and wouldn't they be able to do their job so much better and faster if they were allowed to just follow their gut and do whatever it takes to arrest the person they already pinned down as the dangerous criminal? And then people eat it up and go on the internet to make youtube comments about how refusing to speak with the cops without a lawyer is extremely suspicious behavior.

That is the nicest Werewolf legend I’ve ever heard of.
