The Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence River superimposed on a map of Europe

Avatar

…OH.

I googled it once and the only reason why the Great Lakes aren’t called inland seas is because they are entirely freshwater, not salt.

By any other metric they’d be seas. Superior especially (the big one in the upper left) behaves like a small ocean, and has claimed at least 250 ships and over 1000 people. Gordon Lightfoot wrote a frankly chilling song about her that I’ll include here:

Reblogging for the map as well as for Gordon Lightfoot.

albatrosses will wipe the floor with any species of bird you choose to compare them to. they’re the Most, or at least Extremely, by almost every metric

wingspan. lifespan. intricacy of mating dances. devotion to monogamy. investment in offspring. ability to circumnavigate the globe. literary symbolism that is flexible but not to the point of meaninglessness. eyeliner quality. I could go on

muppetness of said offspring

i feel like the discourse on minority language programs is missing like...funding awareness? minority language programs cost money! that money could go to other things! the argument in favor of actively preserving minority languages cant be "it is nice", it has to be, "it is a better use of resources than whatever else you might do with that money" which is a much harder case! especially because the groups served by minority language preservation programs tend to be pretty poor, such that the idea that *this* is the need that should be prioritized kinda silly imo

The debate isn't missing this in any real sense—since language preservation efforts are almost exclusively organized internally by the communities interested in preservation, this is pretty much the single most active topic of discourse. Like, in the US at least, many of these groups represent explicit democratic constituencies (rather than ad hoc or non-governmental organizations), and "how much money should be allocated for language stuff" is usually pretty core to the entire discussion around language.

The reason this isn't something I've talked about in my last few posts is because

  1. The details are obviously extremely particular, there is no general purpose answer. This is something that I think can and should be decided within communities that want to engage in language preservation efforts, according to how much funding they have, what their other needs are, and so on. I don't think there's much productive I could say on this front.
  2. I'm principally arguing against people who think that language preservation is more-or-less per se bad. Debates about how funding should be allocated would be premature with someone who isn't even convinced the project is worthwhile to begin with.

For context, I took a course a while ago about Indigenous North American languages.

And yes, most language programs are organized within the communities themselves, and organizing these programs is expensive but it's up to them whether they need to preserve it. It often relies on volunteer work from inside the community and collaboration from academic institutions to give them the resources to work on them. There are thousands of unpublished resources on Californian languages rotting in Berkeley right now and are being redistributed to Indigenous communities every two years.

Language preservation isn't always about having it as your official language in day-to-day speech, but it can be reserved for reclamation of culture since you cannot separate the people from the language (and vice versa). Some start out very small, like restoring basic speeches that would be used in ceremonial registers.

Moreover, some clinical studies concluded that language reclamation leads to better mental and physical health for Indigenous communities from better bonding situations.

The major hurdle isn't that they lack funding, uses, or interest, it's more that people don't have time to work to learn the languages themselves. Life gets in the way and you don't have time to learn a new language (especially with having a job full-time).

Language is more than a matter of an instrumental use for minorities, it's a part of their identity that cannot be separated from the people.

i don’t think ur really the right person to be telling this to, but maybe you can find them. so here’s the truth: fraggle rock muppets are wild, in their natural habitat. sesame street muppets have been domesticated, it’s why they look more diverse and all. they’ve been bred that way. and muppet show muppets have gone feral, reintroduced into a wild but heavily urban environment where they thrive cause of their past domestication. like pigeons

okay thats all thx pls spread the word

yeah I agree with this

just like what a strange little creature. theyre related to hummingbirds. they cant actually sit and perch like most birds, the best they can do is cling to vertical surfaces. almost everything they do is done in mid-air. they have to drink by swooping at the surface of water with their mouth open. they build nests out of twigs they break off of branches as they fly by. they eat 5000-6000 bugs a day. And theyre the next president, of the united states of america

i found the weirdest yt channel like its not even really weird but im just???

but anyway some girl has spend years animating a show with her furry ocs set in a western universe with hints of?? native american and aztec mythology as well as like bits of others but not really cause theres a rabbit who wears a fuckin sailor outfit and i cant follow the plot at all and theres a crane called ichabod bc subtle

i actually love this

Okay, but for this to be animated by one person is fucking AMAZING because we have indie animated projects started and shattered by full teams that don’t even have this much flow.

Youtube is weird because sometimes you find amazing art projects buried in it’s annuals that defy explanation due to their quality and the fact they never went viral.

To watch

i’ve been binging this and i’m on episode 24 and really i find the story pretty interesting and not really that difficult to follow??? my only concern is how all the human children except for like Charles inexplicably look like full-grown adults instead of like actual children

I’ve been a fan of No Evil for a little over a year, and I really can’t recommend it enough! Episodes 1-9 are mostly just animation tests and shorts to get an idea of the characters (though episode 2 and 7 are important to understand the backstory and episode 8 and 9 set up two major conflicts throughout the rest of the series).

There’s a lot of exposition in episode 10 which can be hard to follow on a first watch but is really rewarding when you go back to re-watch everything. Also, the animation is freakin gorgeous now and then, just

SHAPESHIFTING

MAGIC

BEAUTIFUL CHARACTERS

FULLY ANIMATED ASL

PERFECT REACTION GIFS

Also they arrange and record a lot of the music in the show all on their own which is frankly amazing https://youtu.be/L6SZgUVTb4Q

No Evil is so good, you really get lost in the magic of the world and are soon invested in the characters. The designs are so cool and the songs are choice.

If you want help getting into the show on YouTube (because the first few episodes are kinda vague and arent explained till later) you can read the comic that takes places before the show

I highly recommend this one, these people put together an amazing story animating at home and recording in their closets and it deserves as much love in response as was put into its creation

Old and not so old fan arts I made of pink and blue characters.

I know that many more characters were missing but I only drew the ones I liked the most just because.

forgot my night time garlic bread in the oven for the length of 2 mythbusters wpisodes and when i opened the oven door it was so thoroughly cremated that i was blinded not by smoke and ash but what surely must have been its Soul as well
