Niall Horan might just be the most surprising member of One Direction.
When the era-defining boyband went on hiatus in January 2016, the lion’s share of attention focused on Harry Styles and Zayn Malik: what would their solo albums sound like? But when Horan dropped his debut LP Flicker the following year, he matched his more talked-about bandmates by topping the US albums chart. Lead single “This Town” showed a new, folky side to the Irishman, while follow-up hit “Slow Hands” proved he could write a guitar bop as catchy as One Direction’s best singles.
Now Niall Horan is back with second album Heartbreak Weather, crafted with a loose concept based around a breakup. “I didn’t want just to be like, ‘I’m so sad, feel sorry for me,‘” Horan tells me. “I wanted some of the songs to be written from the other person’s angle, and to explore all the different feelings you have when you go through a breakup. Because it’s not always sad is it? Some days you’re like, 'Fuck it, I’m going to go out tonight and paint the town red’.” The swaggering, almost Kasabian-ish lead single “Nice to Meet Ya” definitely captures the latter mentality.
When I meet Horan in a fancy London hotel room, he’s friendly, relaxed and seems remarkably well-adjusted for someone who’s been watched, shipped and written about since he was sixteen years old. He also says “fuck” a lot, infectiously, as he talks about his new album, the pros and cons of social media and the never-ending rumours of a 1D reunion.

With boy band One Direction, Niall Horan sold 70 million copies of its five albums, all but one of which hit No. 1.
But when that group went on hiatus in January 2016, it left the group’s members to find their own, um, direction in the music world.
Horan, blond, guitar-playing member of One Direction, showed with his concert Sunday at Allentown Fair grandstand that he’s easily the one who has made the greatest progress toward that solo success. He performed a 19-song, 90-minute set that not only was musically successful, but strong and confident, as well.
Horan, who turns 25 next week, opened with his recent single “On the Loose” – an echo-y, searing song with more of an adult vibe than the boy band fare. He followed that with “The Tide,” a bonus track from his disc that also had more maturity — building and soaring.
Bearded, in a white, short-sleeved shirt and jeans, he even looked more mature.
The third song was his platinum solo debut, “This Town.” And it firmly established hit credentials as a singer songwriter, as he started on acoustic guitar before his five-man band kicked in behind him.
One thing that hasn’t changed: The audience of 5,626 was almost exclusively young females who screamed often and sang along to most every word; it was superfluous for him to ask them to sing along on “This Town.”
His humble personality helped endear the crowd to him. “It’s all still a little mind-blowing,” he said.
In all, he played all nine songs from his debut album, 2017’s “Flicker.” The early “Paper Houses,” with a rumbling tension and Horan’s voice soaring above it, was particularly good. The gentle, heart-rending title track was sweet. The strong “You and Me” had almost a country vibe to it.
For a full country vibe, he brought supporting act Maren Morris back on stage to sing with him on their recent single, “Seeing Blind.” A rumbler, it was a great song for both of them.
But even after playing every song, that still left room to fill in his set. He filled it with a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” (“written by a guy who’s from not too far from here,” he said)
The former was surprisingly good, as Horan slowed it a bit and sang it wistfully rather than the straining frustration The Boss gave it.
He also played two “One Direction” songs — thought he eschewed the group’s biggest hits for the promotional single “Fool’s Gold.” With him alone on acoustic guitar, it still sounded like the group — in a good way.
But his 2017 gold hit “Too Much to Ask” was very much like a One Direction song, and also surprisingly rich; his band added a sentimental background.
The show was not over at press time, but he was scheduled to wind down the main set with his latest single, “Finally Free” and close the main set with another bonus track, “On My Own.”
The encore was another One Direction song, the Top 3 2015 hit “Drag Me Down,” and then his biggest solo hit, “Slow Hands” — a song that has clearly set him apart as One Direction’s biggest success story. He was to close with another bonus track, “Mirrors.“
Horan clearly seems to be headed in the right direction.
JUST HOW FAST THE NIGHT CHANGES and makes us all cry because this little cherub grew up to be a fineass man lighting up lives everywhere and CONTINUES WEARING HIS OWN MERCH
