Reminders for new ao3 users (in no particular order):

- filter your searches like you would on a library website or in an online catalogue

- don’t post placeholders, fic searches, or recommendations as fics. DON’T! It’s against ao3 TOS

- there is no algorithm. ao3 sorts by date posted/updated unless you filter with specific search criteria

- ao3 is a non profit. that means it doesn’t sell ads to make money — it only survives on donations. this is why it can show you so many fics without ever flashing an ad or pop up at you!

- report fics that break TOS when you see them (I.e., placeholder fics, searches) to help other users navigate better

- the tag “dead dove, do not eat” doesn’t equate to gore/awfulness automatically. it is a complementary tag that enhances current tags. E.g., if the fic is tagged “gore” and “dead dove, do not eat” the author really wants you to mind the gore tag

- most fandoms have a variation of “no beta, we die like (x character)” and they all link back to the “No beta” tag

- publishing a new fic sometimes means it won’t show up in the fandom/pairing tag for a few minutes

- subscribers receive update emails at different times, depending on when you update/publish your fic. there’s no good way to predict when an e-mail will be sent — it can be in 30 seconds, or two hours later

- some fics are restricted by authors to those with ao3 accounts only. if you see a blue lock in the upper right corner, that fic is only visible to logged in ao3 users

- you can block commenters now! this didn’t use to be a thing

- updating a fic just to stay at the top of the pairing tag/fandom tag is a dick move. unless you’re legitimately editing or adding chapters, this just annoys readers and fellow authors, and people will skip over your fic

- make sure that you tag your ships correctly, both romantic and platonic. Putting an “&” between a pair of names means that the ship is platonic. Putting a “/” between the characters means its romantic. For example: “Greg & Steve” = platonic. “Greg/Steve” = romantic. They are NOT interchangable.

- if your fic includes original character/s or reader insert or y/n or etc, then TAG THOSE IN THE CHARACTER TAGS. Not just in the relationship tags!! They are characters in the story, so include them in the character tags. Failing to do so means people who want to find fics with those tags won’t be able to, and people who want to exclude fics with those tags won’t be able to.

- NEVER EVER EVER ADD A LINK TO A PATREON OR KO-FEE ACCOUNT OR ETC. Ao3’s entire legal protection hinges on the fact that no one is making money from fics. If you start commissioning fics or linking to a monetary platform, you are in breach of the Ao3 terms, risking legal action, and risking ao3 as a whole. There are loads of authors/companies who WILL sue if they think you’re making money off their intellectual property.

- seconding what OP said about Dead Dove Do Not Eat. It doesn’t automatically mean “gore”; it just means “heed the tags.” It means “Hey yeah when I tagged this as [thing] I was NOT fucking around, ok? Only read this fic if you’re OK with reading [thing].”

additions from someone who has posted way too much on this site please listen to me:

  • there are no best times to post but generally sunday and monday are a good zone for traffic
  • you must double check and make sure the publication date matches the day a chapter is posted or it won’t show up on the first page of updates. sometimes you have to physically edit the posting date multiple times for this to be fixed.
  • on that note: artificially editing your publication date so your fic shows up at the top when you haven’t added a chapter is the dickest of moves and will make you a pariah. do not do this. yes everyone will notice.
  • editing existing chapters doesn’t count as updating a fic and won’t change the publication date.
  • ao3 usually adds weird spaces after italics if you copy and paste in your writing pre-formatted. it doesn’t add these until after you’ve saved a draft or posted so you have to re-edit.
  • check the “add space after paragraph” option in your word precessor of choice to avoid having to delete an extra space between all your paragraphs on ao3.
  • when you add a second chapter to a one chapter fic, your original start/end authors notes will now be appended onto the notes of every chapter unless you move them to the now extant first chapter notes sections. this is confusing, but you’ll see what i mean.
  • to post on anon: add your fic to the anonymous (anonymous) collection. it’ll take up to fifteen to minutes to show in the tag once posted. it’ll show up (to you) as AUTHOR NAME: fic title. no one else sees it this way. it will never show up on your own dashboard unless you go to your stats page. if you ever de-anon, all your subs will get an email about it as if it were just posted.
  • if you update multiple fics at once, ao3 will group the updates into one email.
  • to transfer a fic to a new ao3 account: make a new account, make the new account a co-author, remove the old account as co-author.
  • you cannot mention money changing hands for fic on ao3, ever. don’t say commissions. say a fic was requested if you must say anything. your fic can get taken down for this.
  • reply to comments or never complain about engagement in fandom.
  • per that: EVERY TIME YOU EDIT A COMMENT, THE AUTHOR GETS A NEW COPY OF YOUR COMMENT IN THEIR EMAIL. we can see all the edits. be aware.
  • tagging is both a warning and an enticement, do so accordingly. you really don’t need to tag things that fall outside that unless you want to.
  • on that note: please don’t do the “short fics for 300 different fandoms in one fic” thing. no one wants to scroll past that. i mean you can but it just makes it harder for people to find the thing you’ve written that they want to read.
  • if you are really bad at summaries just think of it as a movie tag line and don’t say you’re bad at summaries. don’t neg your own fic.
  • re all the questions i saw in replies: fic searches are people looking for specific fics. i don’t know what the fuck a placeholder fic is but these aren’t fanworks and you can’t post them. you can’t post discord links or rp requests or complaints about fandom. you can post fanart and meta essays. that’s allowed.

Also Ao3 has a google docs posting script that makes life so much easier when copy+pasting to post !

hey netizens! i'm not sure how many people are aware, but youtube's been slowly rolling out a new anti-adblock policy that can't be bypassed with the usual software like uBlock Origin and Pi-Hole out of the gate

BUT, if you're a uBlock Origin user (or use an adblocker with a similar cosmetics modifier), you can add these commands in the uBlock dashboard (under My Filters) to get rid of it!

youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, []) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)

reblog to help keep the internet less annoying and to tell corporations that try shit like this to go fuck themselves <3

Seen a couple posts on the dashboard lately about writing with ADHD. So, for the ADHD and neurodivergent folks who like writing but struggle sometimes… check out StimuWrite.

You can set it to make little sounds as you type (or leave them off), and emojis pop up in the corner. You can change the background, dark and light themes, set your word goal, and it gives you a percentage and total word count at the bottom. Though it’s more meant for getting a draft written up, so it doesn’t have spell check or anything like that. You’re meant to just copy and past what you write here into Google Docs or Word or Scrivener or whatever else you use and go from there. Honestly love it when I’m struggling to get words down, though. And apparently there’s an update now for StimuWrite 2?👀

Anyways, give it a try if it looks like it may help. It’s currently name-your-own-price.

Yo I just downloaded this thing and hammered out 3000 words????? Which is more than I’ve written in years????????

Hey I’ve accidentally written 20,000 words in six days.

twitter: currently owned by techbro pissman

tumblr: actively removing functionality and bloating the interface with things nobody uses

discord: being retooled by ex-Meta management who don't understand the appeal of the platform

youtube: neutered by advertisers and algorithms and also tiktokification

reddit: half of the site is down due to protests about the removal of third-party API support

facebook: my mom is on there

Instagram: adstagram

Tiktok: just introduced "tiktok shop" effectively making it the new adstagram

But it does.

It does… one at a time.  It’d be useful to be able to select more than one. G&T but not higher, M&E only, everything but E for those who just don’t like smut. (btw I just checked and there is none of the exclusion filters showing on the search page at least in my computer)

AO3 does ‘and’ filters.

You don’t filter for M&E. You filter for not the other stuff.

I have never seen so many users clearly baffled by and too skittish to push buttons/toggles that are very clearly meant to be used.

If a trusted website has a button and you don’t immediately know or understand what it does, push it. Check out every drop down, every link, every configuration imaginable. Be adventurous. Fuck around and find out. If it breaks the website, they shouldn’t have had that button in the first place. Not on you. Indulge your curiosity instead of complaining it doesn’t do something it absolutely does if you poke around a little.

You’re not going to get a bad grade in filtering by using interface features from AO3, I promise.

Look, there are library systems that don’t have filters as good as AO3. You have to learn how to use Boolean operators (AND OR NOT) and construct a proper query to exclude in several academic databases, and AO3 just performs “NOT” for you by clicking a button.

Do you know how many grad students would love to have the kind of power you have with AO3 in filters?

Ao3 filters are amazing. You can filter out ratings, you can filter out characters or pairings, you can filter out specific tags (as long as it’s an official tag)! (Type it in under “other tags to exclude”)

This is why the antis complaining about seeing content they don’t like on Ao3 is so frustrating. If something squicks you out, filter it, and you never have to see it again! Voila! Or even if it is just something you don’t like. I have High School AUs filtered out because I just don’t like them! It’s an amazing system and makes it so easy to curate your experience.

I am so spoiled by the Ao3 filters. Every time I encounter a particularly terrible search system at work I sigh wistfully about them.

A New History of Fandom Purges

On November 24th, 2018, I posted a list of major deletions of sites or of content on sites that stripped fandom of its history. A bunch of pro-shipper blogs had just been deleted, and people were nervous. I suppose I was thinking “All this has happened before…”

On December 3rd, 2018, Tumblr’s Department of Irony announced the NSFW ban. Thanks for providing this salutary lesson to The Youth and a billion reblogs to me, I guess.

Today, we have AO3 for writing. Audio, images, and video are in as much danger as ever, yet fans attack AO3 every donation drive. For those of you who forget our past…

HERE IS WHAT HISTORY HAS TAUGHT US!

This is only a small taste of the many times that:

  • Fannish moderators got bored, ran out of money, or had a falling out, deleting a site/list/forum along the way.
  • Sites got bought out and closed for being unprofitable.
  • Fandom got hit as governments targeted piracy or political dissidents.
  • Fans grudge reported each other.
  • Official forums got deleted when the canon finished.

It’s not always malicious. It’s not always about us. But we lose every time.

Some of these purges hit everyone. Many of them hit m/m content specifically or female gaze-y material in general. This is why antis are dead wrong. This is why anti-fujoshi policies end up being anti-m/m policies. This is why we need clear labeling, not content restrictions.

This is why we need AO3.

And it’s why we need a solution for audio, visuals, and video too.

So grateful for the historical memory and the long view on a phenomenon many of us have come to late, and/or take for granted.

And this is why AO3 generates twice its goal amount in just a few days: they are irreplaceable.

Also: they don’t have to be perfect to be irreplaceable, and they also don’t have to be perfect to be better than our other options.

(If you think you can make a better option, have at! Allez-y! Gods-speed! AO3 came out of people Just Doing It, so can your perfect ideal! But Also.)

Anonymous asked:

Wait i’m so intrigued will u elaborate on the “harringtons threw their baby down the stairs” bit ?

baby steve fell down the stairs -> hopper and powell and fellow cops were like lol they threw their baby down the stairs 🤣 -> joke inherited by callahan and he loves it even though he doesn’t fully get the context -> sometimes hopper feels guilty but not guilty enough to stop crackin the classic joke at the precinct christmas party -> hopper sits across from steve harrington at the hospital waiting room in 1983 and Looks At Him and thinks to himself my god what have i done -> hopper says okay guys seriously no more harringtons threw their baby down the stairs jokes -> callahan continues to tell the joke

For those of you who want to lock all of your works with all the silly AI scraping of AO3 (which AO3 is recommending you lock your works, as stated in this post)

Here is a quick and easy guide of how to edit ALL of your works at once.

From your Dashboard click on “edit works” on the far right. This will bring up all of your works that you can select.

Select all the works you want to edit, then hit “Edit” at the bottom right.

Scroll to nearly the bottom of the page where you find “Visibility” and select “only show to registered users” and then update at the bottom.

That’s it, all of your works have now been locked without having to go in and edit each fic individually.

I hope this helps!

but no yeah lets have the conversation:

"the CEO doesnt want to run that kind of website" Excuse, shouldnt have bought the 'go nuts show nuts whatever' website if thats the case. APPEAL DENIED

"we have to follow the TOS of the appstores we're hosted on" Excuse item one, no you dont, item two, you have since those days implimented infrastructure that would allow pornography and sex work on this platform Without violating TOS of any applicable app store. APPEAL DENIED

"we own the site we get to make the rules" Incorrect, this site has only ever made profit when the users willed it. we collectively own the site as a hive mind and no legal change in ownership will change that. APPEAL DENIED

"we have to keep this website safe for the children who use it" Argument based on fallacy banning pornography and sex workers does not prevent pornography and sex work from occuring on the site, it only forces aforementioned users to hide and avoid labling their content appropriately, which REDUCES the safety for children and sex workers alike instead of increasing it, this has been shown to the point that making this argument at all is tantamount to admiting fascist intent APPEAL DENIED

Reblog it. I want this to be on Tumblr radar by end of the week, i want my notes to be useless from the discourse, i want every single person on Tumblr to have seen this post at some point

Summary: Everyone knows that after a break up, Steve Harrington invites as many people over to his house as he possibly can. And every girl knows that if you want a chance to be with him, even for a night, going to a party like this is your best bet.

Chapter 1 - A Moment’s Pleasure

Carol’s idea of a mash up between spin-the-bottle and seven-minutes-in-heaven brings life back into a dwindling party that Chrissy was looking forward to concluding early.

She’s been the butt of a few mean girl jokes and some of the guys keep picking on her and talking about her like she’s some kind of piece of meat, but she’s dragged to the circle and sat down in a corner where the girls around her shuffle away and she’s left with twin gaps on either side of her that make it glaringly obvious she’s not welcome.

Doing her best not to call attention to it more than it already does itself, she forces a smile and crosses her legs, feeling self conscious when the guys start to join them.

With her jacket off, she feels weirdly naked and she considers going back to the door to get it, but then worries that it might just make this all worse. She keeps her hands in her lap instead and does her best to remain calm.

She barely glances up to see Steve Harrington coming in to take a seat on her left side, filling up some of the gap left behind. The girl on the other side of him moves over suddenly, trying to be closer to him until they’re touching arms, she’s shameless, but Chrissy gets it.

He looks incredibly good tonight even though he’s drunk, hair a little more free than it would be in school, a tight sweatshirt with the sleeves pushed up to expose his forearms, cheeks flush from the alcohol, and lipstick stains dusting along the right side of his neck, leading down to the collar of his shirt and disappearing underneath.

Don’t Add Fanfiction To Your Goodreads Shelf

Hi folks, I know some of you like to use Goodreads to track all your reading and don’t want to distinguish between books and fanfiction.

I am, however, begging you not to do this. It is extremely jarring and disconcerting to be a fic author and find your works somewhere in the wild where you did not personally put them. Fics are not books, are not published in the same way as books, and exist in a precarious legal space.

Please don’t attempt to elide the separation that exists between fandom and the world of official publishing.

Well this is much nicer than how I said it 🤣

[ID: tweet from @westiectweets — “PSA: Don’t Fucking Add Fic to Goodreads What the Fuck”]

update to add:

if you are a fic author and you find your fic on Goodreads, you can get it removed!

Here’s how:

  1. First, you gotta go to Goodreads support Contact Us page. Fill out the form as follows:
  2. What can we help you with? - Book records: adding or editing
  3. What device were you using? - this answer doesn’t matter
  4. Are you reaching out as a publisher, author, neither, or both? - Author
  5. What does your inquiry relate to? fanfiction recorded as book
  6. In the main body of the question, include the link(s) to the Goodreads record(s) for your fic(s)
  7. Hit submit!
  8. Someone should contact you pretty fast; I got a reply within a couple hours, even though it was a Sunday afternoon. They wanted me to confirm that it was a fanfic and asked me to provide proof of authorship which was kinda weird to answer but I was like “uhhh my tumblr is the same handle as my ao3 does that count?” and that seemed to go over just fine.
  9. Once they say they’ve deleted the records it should no longer be searchable although for whatever reason the direct links apparently still work. That’s Amazon for ya I guess.

I hope this helps some of my fellow fic authors!

hey guys please reblog this version

I’ve seen multiple people reblogging the original post with tags saying how they have struggled to get their fics taken down off Goodreads & I want folks to know that it IS possible
