Making Messes Look Easy

@calminggoat4u

Fantasy is amazing, but work can be done to make it a reality

so SAG-AFTRA finally released some official guidance for fans, viewers, creators/influencers, critics, and more during the strike. here's what you need to know:

  1. if you see a publication/news source/journalist talking about a piece of struck work, that's ok. they're allowed to do that.

2. they're asking regular viewers and fans to DONATE TO STRIKE FUNDS, SHOW UP TO PICKETS IF YOU CAN, and please do NOT boycott streaming services or movies in theaters.

3. influencers, content creators, cosplayers, and anything in between is still a bit of a grey area, but they're asking people to use their best judgement. "organically" means UNPAID promo (like an invite to a premiere without being paid, being sent a publicity box, letting the company's social media post a photo of you in cosplay, etc).

obviously this doesn't answer every question, and isn't hard and fast rules for fanworks, but it can at least inform how you personally choose to move forward when posting online and moving publically. i hope this helps!

Love it when I look up Mangaka and I get images like this:

Like YES QUEENS! Protect your identities in the most dramatic way possible! Live that weird little girl life. Embrace the chaos.

i genuinely dont care if the creation of all media comes to a screeching halt btw i will very gladly live with no new movies no new tv shows no new anything for years if that's what it takes for the people who create them to be treated like human beings. i hope every other facet of the entertainment industry goes on strike too and i hope all the ones that havent unionised yet will. i want media creation to become completely impossible and i want the people who could make it possible again to hold out until they get every single thing they want. btw

Oh yes, here come the hundreds of Miguel O'hara fanfics with badly made spanish conjuctions.

So a bit of advice: just use full phrases. Instead of throwing one spanish word inside an english phrase, use full spanish phrases. Is more natural and sounds better.

Since this is getting some traction:

The movie itself gives really good examples of how to write native spanish speakers.

Miguel O'hara says things like "No puedo más, no puedo más". That is a full phrase, and is his way to express a strong emotion like frustration, so it makes sense for him to want to say it in his native lenguge, because he can express it better than in english.

Is the most fool proof place to put injunctions, when the emotions are high and the character needs to express something.

Another good one is when he says: "¡Ay coño!" Those are just two words, but they are still a full phrase, because is an expression, an expresion is a full phrase in and on itself.

Also when he says "Qué maravilla..." sarcastically at Miles. That is a full phrase.

A good way to remember what is and isn't a full phase is check if it conveys an entire idea or not. Even if is just one word like "Chale", is expressing a single full idea, is like saying "Damn".

You can see how not to use it with Miles, you can tell he tries to say full phrases in spanish, but is more difficult for him because mid-sentence he forgets the words, so he just finishes the sentence in english.

"Tranquila mami, eso no es my fault."

He tries to convey: "Easy mom, that is not my fault", in spanish that would be: "Tranquila mami, eso no es mi culpa."

That is a full idea, but he just can't finish it, so the part he says in spanish is just half the idea:

"Tranquila mami, eso no es..." (Easy mom that is not...)

And is incorrect. Her mom actually gets angry because of that, and aks if he is learning spanglish, because nobody who knows spanish actually talks like that.

But Miles does that because he is not a fully native spanish speaker and doesn't fully know how to speak it.

Spanish speakers are more likely to speak like Miguel O'hara or Miles's mom. With full phrases that express single full ideas.

Keep in mind, when bilingual people speak one lenguge and then another, we have to make like a brain switch, for the most experinced is an easy one, but still a switch and it would be a mess to try and switch while you are in the middle of expressing an idea.

And since I'm perfectly aware of the nature of most of these fics, some other things to evoid mistakes.

In terms of enderment I would stick to the most easy and common ones:

Amor, with variants such as mi amor and amor mío.

Cariño / Mi vida

And don't forget, these terms STILL need to be inside a full spanish phrase to not sound so weird. Think of them as the subject in the sentence, beacause that is what it is, is not a full idea. And as we already stabished, use full ideas only.

If not, just use english terms, is fine.

Actually begging everyone who watches Across the Spiderverse to learn the difference between "villain" & "Antagonist"

They are not the same thing-

Miguel is an *antagonist* because he is making obstacles for Miles who is the *protagonist*

Miguel isn't a Villain. The Spot is the Villain.

Are his methods the best? No. But ultimately his actions are not self serving, he *is* trying to protect people!

He's not a Villain!!!! He's an antagonist!!!! Stop calling him a villain, these words are not the same!!!!!

peacemaker? our flag means death? the batman? heartstopper? everything everywhere all at once? the owl house s2? thor 4? wwdits s4? harley quinn s3 ? a league of their own? the sandman?

Oh, yes.

A few years ago I went to pick up a woman I met on OKCupid for a date, and a friend of hers was there. They kind of over-explained “Oh, she just showed up to say hi” and there was a vague nervousness in the air that even my autistic ass was picking up on. Her friend was playing conspicuously with her phone. I went “Ah, the safety. Need to get a picture?”

Dead silence for about a second and a half, then the friend took a picture, looked at my date, and said “Have fun” and walked out the door.

(I would ordinarily have been clueless, but I’d just been asked to be the safety the previous night.)

My advice to male-presenting folks: recognize that this not your problem. By which I mean, this sort of security check isn’t a problem for you. It doesn’t hurt you. You aren’t being insulted or disrespected. And if you treat it like what it is– a reasonable adaptation to an unreasonable situation– and just roll with it, your dates will be more comfortable, and you will have a better time as a result.

The same applies to phone calls mid-date. Let them answer the damn phone without drama.

They aren’t accusing you of being a dangerous person. The very fact that they are willing to go on a goddamn date with you means that they have extended a certain level of trust. But the fact remains that there isn’t really a way to distinguish between “a man who isn’t dangerous” and “a man who knows how to behave like he’s not dangerous.”
