Still quite contrary...

@callie-quite-contrary / callie-quite-contrary.tumblr.com

I'm just here for the Loki gifsets these days.

WTF is going on with this daft hellsite now and why is my dashboard page after page after page of (blocked) recommended posts and NOTHING ELSE?

Fucking bloody hell, I give up.

Just so you know, the Lockwood & Co adaptation at Netflix is very very very very VERY good and everyone should give it a look. And a listen, because add about ten extra 'verys' for the 80s goth soundtrack...

Just poking my head in to say:

  1. Darian Kaptich still has the best costumes, hairstyle, energy and enthusiasm in the entire field of men's singles skating,
  2. Lockwood & Co. on Netflix is really very good and tons of fun, people should watch it if they like great scripts, disaster teenagers hunting ghosts and saving the world and possibly themselves on a regular basis, and fantastic 80s goth soundtracks, and
  3. If no ice dancers use the Lockwood & Co. soundtrack for the 80s-themed rhythm dance next season, they are going to be missing a very big trick indeed. Reed/Ambrulevicius in particular, you are on notice to get your goth on!

So apparently Tumblr turned into Tumpollr while my back was turned.

Okay.*

*Reader, it was not okay, as there is such a thing as Too Many Polls.

Getting quite pissed off at tumblr right now for not at any point showing the thing I just reblogged a couple of hours ago on my own dash.

I reblogged it because I want to look at it, you useless hellsite.

T;dr:

Disney now have exclusive airing rights to Doctor who worldwide barring the UK and Ireland

They essentially fucking own it.

This is very very very very very very bad

I am still fucking seething about this news since reading it this morning.

Both on a “I don’t want to give Disney any more money than I absolutely have to” level but also on a historical, cultural level.

Because I live in New Zealand, and we’ve had Doctor Who publicly broadcast, free-to-air, for 59 years. We were the first country outside of the UK to air it on TV! Australia has been publicly airing Doctor Who, again free-to-air, for 58 years!

Doctor Who has absolutely had a cultural impact on Australia and New Zealand, both as a sci-fi TV show, but also as an institute of local public broadcasting.

And the thing is, those local broadcasts? Missing episodes were able to be found because those broadcasts were physical copies.

Doctor Who fans are fond of physical media for a reason - we have trauma about losing stories due to a central distributor deciding to destroy the original tapes and telling everyone they sold copies to they should do the same. We’re also fond of pirating for this same reason, as again, some episodes only exist because a rich someone pointed a video camera at their TV and pirated recorded the show because they liked it. Never mind we have all the audio tracks because there were many fans who would pirate/record the audio off the TV.

Thankfully Disney don’t have any creative input into Doctor Who due to this deal, but it is concerning that they have exclusive streaming AND broadcast rights. Both the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Company) and TVNZ have released statements saying they’re no longer able to air new Doctor Who following this announcement.

It’s also unknown if Disney having exclusive streaming rights will impact physical media releases. There may be delays to DVD/Bluray releases, there may be geographic restrictions (eg UK gets DVD & Bluray releases, but only international only gets Bluray) or there might not be any physical release at all.

And while I am glad that fans in countries where Doctor Who has not been broadly licensed will get to enjoy Doctor Who in a more timely fashion (hopefully), I am so gutted that it comes at the expense of all this history and in ignorance of that same history.
