not to sound like a high school english teacher, but i actually think it's really interesting looking into authors backgrounds and seeing how their past has influenced their storytelling, especially as a scifi/fantasy reader. like, it makes so much sense that leguin was an anthropologist and arkady martine has a doctorate in comparative history and seth dickinson did research on racial bias in policing. just look at what they made!!
the fact that ann leckie used to be a lunch lady may not seem relevant, but you have to remember the song about the thousand eggs
The Bank Shot Job
I started watching Leverage when the first episode aired, and I watched the whole series in real time. A year or so after it ended, I got the S1 DVDs and started a rewatch. And when I got to The Bank Shot Job, my jaw DROPPED.
I remembered the episode, but from what I could recall of how well they worked together, of how they dealt with all the unexpected problems, of how on each other’s team they all were, I thought it had to have been at least a S2 episode. I was astonished when I realized how early it was.
And in retrospect, the fact that they gave Parker the line, “Sometimes bad guys are the only good guys you get,” BASICALLY THE THESIS STATEMENT OF THE ENTIRE SHOW, is just so brilliant. Aside from the foreshadowing, Parker’s the one who, arguably, is the least “normal” of the lot of them. She’s the one who is most purely a thief at that point in the show. Giving her that line just made it resonate with so much more significance and sincerity.
One of the many reasons Leverage is wonderful is that it hits the ground running and doesn’t stumble. Most shows take a few episodes, or a half-season, or an entire season, to really hit their stride. Often when you go back and watch early episodes, you laugh a little at the early characterizations, and how they’re a little off because the writers and actors hadn’t yet settled into the show and the roles.
With Leverage, though, when you go back and watch the early episodes after watching the entire series, all of those characters are right there, complete and completely recognizable. They all change over the course of the show, of course—Leverage has some of the BEST character growth and arcs of any show I’ve ever seen—but they’re the same characters, and it’s amazing.
What I loved most about that episode is that it’s like they planted the seeds for the series finale already. From the point Sophie and Nate are stuck in the bank, then entire job falls on Hardison, Parker, and Eliot. They do the leg work, the preparation. And once Nate’s com is down, they also the planning. Even in season 1 they showed us that the trio can manage things on their own.
mst3k appeals to several of my interests
- bad movies
- silly puppets
- talking over movies
- niche references
- absurdist skits
- low budget scifi about some guy stuck in space
- the urge to repeat random phrases from all over the place because of something someone said reminded you of it
more really good ones
ooh, good choices, but I'm having trouble concentrating enough to decide because this bird will *not* leave me alone
【忘羡】🎶💕
Screams in goddamn relief// so fucking happy oh lord this jammed me for the longest time and I struggled so much even tho I was hella excited for this piece bcus yes it’s my spin on Klimt’s famous piece and I tot it’s perfect for them 🥺
Swords rated by sexiness:
- Broadsword <- Not for me but I guess if you're into bears
- Rapier <- This one’s sexy but like a little too sexy. I wouldn't approach a rapier at a bar
- Longsword <- Handsome but boring. Almost too boring to mention
- Flamberge <- Huge show-off, kinda want to knock the flamberge down a peg, but in a sexy way
- That’s all the swords I know thanks for coming
- Basket hilt <- looks too cool to talk to but is actually pretty cool
- Cavalry sabre <- absolute thirst trap, I’m unbuttoning my shirt right now
- Naval saber <- simple, straight to the point, probably worth a quickie behind the club before never mentioning it ever again (simple can be sexy)
- Gladius <- braggart, probably starts a bar fight and listens to alpha male podcasts
- Sword cane <- puts on a show, is actually quite plain underneath it all; endearing and sexy if wielded by a dashing Victorian thief
- Scimitar <- not my fave, but this is a sword that fucks
Swiss sabre - always in good shape and well turned out, though occasionally a bit excessive for some tastes...
...but when not overdressed, definitely worth closer attention.
oh snap

This is an actual Therapist Recommended method for dealing with a runaway “inner critic” and this comic is perfect ❤️
Y'all about to have me out here drawing my inner critic so I can visualize, then insult it.
I can’t draw! What are you doing to me!
The Good Place (2016-2020)
brah
The Good Place’s take on morality is so important to me. It never suggests that being good is easy or straightforward - quite the opposite - but it says, over and over again, that we need to try because we’re all people and we all matter.
This really ought to top every, “Best Opening Lines,” list. The 21st century reading public is sleeping on Dorothy L Sayers.
The whole first paragraph is worth quoting for its snarky conclusion:
"The best remedy for a bruised heart is not, as so many people seem to think, repose upon a manly bosom. Much more efficacious are honest work, physical activity, and the sudden acquisition of wealth. After being acquitted of murdering her lover, and, indeed, in consequence of that acquittal, Harriet Vane found all three specifics abundantly at her disposal; and although Lord Peter Wimsey, with a touching faith in tradition, persisted day in and day out in presenting the bosom for her approval, she showed no inclination to recline upon it."
Brother Gregor never spoke and often spooked the neophytes with his appearance, but he was a gentle soul and a phenomenal cook and knew more ways to prepare a fish than the abbot knew hymns
Arthouse Muppets

I cant stop thinking about Yor Forger, THEE character of all time. she's the country's greatest assassin. she's a dumbass. she has a drinking problem. she does parkour. she's married to a complete stud. she has never kissed. she can't cook for shit. she loves her daughter more than anything. she will kill again.
