what's the best way to start reading about post-colonial theory?

postcolonial theory is interesting because it’s an intersection of race, gender, and class, and sometimes goes beyond what we would conceptualise as ‘postcolonial’ in the strictest sense, e.g. not just countries that were once part of the british empire. it’s more about the critique of supremacy of the ‘western’ world. it’s also an area of study that covers many different subjects, not just IR/polsci, so keeping that in mind, here is what i can recommend as a brief reading recommendation list.

  • orientalism by edward said — this is like. the foundational text on postcolonialism. as you could probably guess from the title, it’s focusing on the relationship between the west and east (the orient).
  • power, postcolonialism and international relations: reading race, gender and class by geeta chowdhry and shelia nair — this is a very IR heavy analysis of postcolonialism. it’s very good, very comprehensive, and has quite a few case studies.
  • africa in the colonial ages of empire by tatah mentan — this is a dense piece of work, but really really interesting and comprehensive when it comes to analysing africa through a postcolonial lens. this book literally taught me about the way US foreign policy is written to continue extracting resources from africa under the guise of ‘liberal internationalism’ which, hey! i wrote a whole essay on.
  • prison notebooks by antonio gramsci — hey i’m recommending gramsci again. gramsci coined the term ‘subaltern’ and he’s just a really important source for critical theory regardless of what perspective you’re coming from. i am biased, i really really like gramsci.
  • can the subaltern speak? by gayatri chakravorty spivak — she’s cool. her theory is cool. she makes the point to seperate ‘subaltern’ from the marxist sense of being synonymous with proletariat, and gives it a specific colonial meaning.
  • the white saviour industrial complex by teju cole — right of the bat, i want to be clear that teju cole is not a postcolonial theorist, but his article here is really really interesting, and i what i was talking about when i said i brought up kony 2012 as an example of postcolonial response.
  • imperialism, the highest stage of capitalism by lenin — >:)

as for non book/journal sources, i would really recommend checking out some of the speeches of fidel castro and che guevara, and if you live in a country with a history of colonialism, looking into the work of indigenous rights activists within your country. i live in aotearoa (new zealand), and would recommend specifically the legacy and activism of whina cooper.

i fucking hate to make an ace discourse post in 20 fucking 20 but it really needs to be said and i KNOW this is gonna come off as a smarmy “i told you so post”

but i’ve been on twitter recently and there is a fucking DELUGE of people promoting the idea of “bisexual lesbians” (never bisexual gay men but like… that’s a tangential dialogue for another time). this idea that you can be bisexual and a lesbian at the same time is a direct product of the split attraction model.

this is the EXACT shit i was talking about when I said rhetoric from ace community is not compatible, at all, with the LGBT community.

sexualizing the -sexual suffix so “bisexual” SOLELY means “SEXUALLY attracted to the opposite gender” so someone can be bisexual and “homoromantic” is ACTIVELY harmful to lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals. it sexualizes bisexuals without consent and COMPLETELY redefines what gayness is so it can include attraction to the “opposite” gender.

and this is just one example of how ace inclusion–not just the inclusion of cisgender, straight aces but also the prioritization of ace ideals–hurts the LGBT community. the rhetoric that you can have sex with people you aren’t attracted to to “make it work” romantically is conversion therapy rhetoric. Ace inclusion makes it seem like the LGBT community is about our relationships to sex when that just isn’t true. Ace inclusion means “desexualizing” LGBT spaces so as not to upset asexuals. All this shit AND MORE is happening in real time and I’ve watched it get worse and worse, hand in hand with the commercialization of LGBT pride and the liberalization of LGBT activism.

ace rhetoric is eroding LGBT identities. the idea of the “bisexual lesbian” and other mogai microidentities where you parse every single aspect of your identity into a different label is actively harming vulnerable LGBT people.

and, no, this isn’t me saying “even LGBT aces have to go,” but this is me saying that putting ace identities at the forefront of ANY LGBT discussions leaves a lot of space for harm for LGBT people. and that any fucking ace rhetoric besides “it’s okay to not feel sexual attraction or want to have sex” comes at the expense of LGBT identity.

genuinely, the concept of “bisexual lesbian” is a direct product of the ace community and it has caused lesbians and bisexual women irreparable harm. and aces should be ashamed of this because this is what they have been defending for years.

this is the EXACT shit we said would come out of the split attraction model and now we have TEENAGERS telling strangers and adults “i’m sexually attracted to [x genders] but only romantically into [y]” and y’all think this is okay. even if it weren’t fucking INSANE to say lesbians can be attracted to men or that bisexuals can be half gay or half straight, you’d STILL be out of fuckng line having KIDS center identities around SOLELY sexual attraction.

i’m ripshit pissed

i am saying this with everything i have–there is NOTHING positive to come out of the ace community that couldn’t have been identically accomplished by simply saying “you don’t ever have to want sex, you don’t owe anyone sex, it’s okay to not sexually desire anyone” which is shit feminism has already been doing.

*Help a Black&Brown lgbt couple move across country!!!*

Hey everyone, I haven’t updated our about our situation in a while for several reasons, mostly mental health wise, and my partner’s complex employment. For those who dont know Im a Black 2S lesbian and my partner @honeybearbutch IS a Mexican trans woman, both of us are disabled, have struggled through abuse, and poverty but now Xochitl and I have a very real chance to finally being able to live together like we had planned pre rona. They have a friend who is willing and able to drive across country to help us be together! We are going for it but we really need more funds to complete this safely. It’s going to be almost 5k miles total and 9+ nights, i’ve gone over how much it’s going to be for gas, hotel/bnb, food, and living expense for when i get to Michigan and we don’t have that money because lots of the money we have been rasing on gofundme (over 3k) has gone to just keeping us alive during the pandemic. We are checking in with my partner’s friend to see what they need in terms of cost/accommodations like gas, and minor repairs, but from what i’ve already calculated what we need is pushing almost 4K, and obviously we don’t need it all upfront but I NEED to book this airbnb before xmas and the festive cold season. We have enough to book the airbnb now but then i would have exactly 3 dollars left, so you see our problem. We need 1,600 soon out of the toal by DEC 18! to cover the costs that we have now for moving me across country, this includes getting new scripts/meds refills x3 months, getting documents, getting storage/downsizing and a lot more. I don’t want to go into the red right now because thats more money i dont have. I really need this to happen, so we can be together and leave behind our toxic situations/our toxic families and actually be openly trans and gay together. We finally have a chance to make our lives the ones we want to live. So if you wanna help us everything shared and donated (esp direct donations!) is deeply appreciated.

Help me move my girlfriend cross country!!!!

Hello everyone!!!

A lot has happened in the past week or so, long story short, me (@honeybearbutch) and my girlfriend (@800-dick-pics) finallyhave a chance to move in together!!!!

A friend of mine has agreed to drive me across the country to pick my girlfriend up from California and bring them back here to my home state of Michigan to stay at an air bnb we have booked while we take more steps toward acheiving our goal of getting me away from my abusive family, my friend has agreed to pay for the cost of gas but aside from that we need urgent help covering the cost of

  • The remaining balance of the Airbnb
  • Travel costs/things needed for the trip
  • Food and groceries
  • My girlfriends medications

As well as miscellaneous expenses and also just so we have money to save and use when we need since we both cant work during the pandemic.

We are currently at $8297 of our $15000 gofundme goal (seen here) and we appreciate every donation weve gotten since our situation has become more urgent

However, since it takes gofundme a minimum of 2 days to process donations and they take a percentage of the money we heavily suggest direct donations to either of our cashapps and venmos to help us more immediately!!!

For those who have trouble reading that:

Imagine being a black, gay drag queen in the 1800s after being born into enslavement AND having the style and cachè to throw soirées that the girls had to come to! That’s why I don’t want to hear this “we’re not our ancestors stuff.” You’re right!

From The Very Black Project Page- William Dorsey Swann was a gay liberation activist. Born into slavery in 1858, he was the first person in the United States to lead a queer resistance group and the first known person to self-identify as a “queen of drag”. Imagine the queenery of this icon.

He was a slave in Hancock, Maryland and was freed by Union soldiers after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. During the 1880s and 1890s, he organized a series of balls in Washington, D.C. He called himself the “queen of drag”. Most of the attendees his gatherings were men who were former slaves, and were gathering to dance in their satin and silk dresses. William was arrested in police raids numerous times, including in the first documented case of arrests for female impersonation in the United States, on April 12, 1888. In 1896, he was falsely convicted and sentenced to 10 months in jail for “keeping a disorderly house” (running a brothel). After his sentencing, he requested a pardon from President Grover Cleveland. This request was denied, but but he was the first American on record who pursued legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ community’s right to gather.

He was known to have been close with Pierce Lafayette and Felix Hall, two men who had also both been slaves and who formed the first known male same-sex relationship between enslaved Americans.

When William stopped organizing and participating in drag events, his brother continued to make costumes for the drag community. Two of his brothers had also been active participants in his drag balls.

Imagine how intelligent and ambitious this man had to be to come up with drag balls in the 1800s! Imagine how many terrible concepts he had to unlearn by himself to be a confident gay black man who does drag in the 1800s! Imagine how courageous he had to be to fight for lgbt people as a former slave in America in the 1800s!

William Dorsey Swann is the original queen, the original drag mother, the original activist. Tell his story!

Y'know as much as I don't support "bi lesbian" with how many times lesbians tell bi women their oppression isn't real and they're not welcome to use the terms they've historically had alongside lesbians, I'm starting to see why some people want "the best of both worlds" and won't pick one label or the other. I'm not trying to blame lesbians for the start of "bi lesbian", just pointing out a realization I had.

If you’re genuinely interested in learning more about settler colonialism and answering questions like “wait what does land back look like?” “What can I do?” and “What are the contexts informing this and why do Indigenous people reject being part of the US/Canada?” there are free syllabi online which can answer these questions (they will not answer it directly, the point is to get you to think for yourself and ask more questions that can lead you to thinking more deeply about this and how you can personally take action towards better practices of solidarity)
